La Dispute and Former Thieves live

ladisputeThe Borderline
24th January, 2012

Former Thieves have had some bad luck over the past couple of days with van trauma in mainland Europe and illness plaguing the band’s members. Yet they’re gracious and potent on stage tonight, their visceral yet carefully paced set pulsating through the venue despite a largely unmoving crowd. This two band bill makes for a show that rivals La Dispute’s last London appearance at the Underworld with Touche Amore. The rather more intimate feeling of The Borderline lends itself well to both bands’ clear desire to connect with the audience. Despite everyone’s lack of movement for the openers, you can tell they’re being well received as attention is fully on the music emanating from the stage. The bar is quiet. It’s the music everyone is here for tonight.

La Dispute have already proven themselves as live favourites amongst those in the know on these shows. Their deeply emotive music verges on the uncomfortable at times but tonight’s unrelenting emotion is delivered with a rawness and a sincerity that is undeniable and ultimately appealing. Perfectly crafted songs balance sparse textures with dramatic riffs and vocals that sound so close to breaking, you can’t help but empathise with the lyrics.

Ever the socially conscious, La Dispute have chosen to donate a portion of their merch sales to Teenage Cancer Trust tonight. They also requested a donation (of any amount) from those lucky enough to be on the guestlist for the event. There’s certainly a sense that this is far more than a token gesture and that this a band who really want to make a difference wherever they can. And it’s oh so evident that their performance tonight has made a difference to each person present. Stirring stuff.

The Dwarves explode in London

the_dwarvesRaucous US punk band The Dwarves rolled back in to the UK last night and tore Camden’s Underworld a new ring-piece.

As soon as the band kicked off their set, the pit exploded with people flying everywhere and continued throughout the night. Singer, Blag found a random ‘performance artist’ on his travels – a stripper armed with an angle grinder and plenty of blood that soaked the audience on the last song. They also played a Ting Tings cover as Ting Tings cover as giant Hells Angels moshed amongst the rabble.

Look out for them ripping the UK up on this winter tour playing tracks from their great new album at the following dates:

Nov 20th – Thekla, Bristol (£11.00)
Nov 22nd – Manchester Moho Live, Manchester (£10.00)
Nov 23rd – Rock City, Nottingham (£11.00)
Nov 24th – Ivory Blacks, Glasgow (£10.00)
Nov 25th – The Cockpit, Leeds (£12.00)

A Day in The Life of illustrator Mr Gauky

Filmed and edited by Matthew Bromley
Photo: Lee J

Well, you are in for a treat this week as London based artist Mr. Gauky has allowed us into his studio to see what goes on behind the scenes of his incredible work.

Mr Gauky is the man behind the Battle Royal themed Superdead decks that are currently out right now and has become one of the most talked about artists in town this year. So, with this in mind, we decided to get the lowdown from the man himself as he is also one of the artists we have picked to be involved in our Toxic Wasters sticker art show at this year’s Halloween Massacre.

Watch this Day in the Life video that will give you a sneak peek at some of his drawings, illustrations and work in progress followed nicely with some dangerous rooftop coffee and cake time and a few pumps at his local cement hole- Cantelowes skatepark in Camden.

The Nirvana Nevermind Exhibition opens in London

To celebrate 20 years of the release of Nirvana‘s epic album Nevermind, a major Nirvana exhibition opened last night in Brick Lane that was packed to the gills with people on the opening night.

In Bloom: The Nirvana Nevermind Exhibition opened it’s doors with a live set from dub artist Little Roy who played a set of Nirvana covers in a dub stylee to a bunch of smiley, happy faces who were supping on free rum and gingers.

Special guests, music artists and even footballer Joey Barton turned out to soak up the fantastic photos from various photographers who have documented the band over the years, including the legendary Steve Gullick. These snaps sit alongside various Nirvana memorabilia that fills the large space opposite Rough trade records East store and also has some interactive fun for tech geeks to play with amongst traditional flyers, gig posters and many more amazing memories from the grunge era.

If you are in East London in the next 2 weeks then pop in and see what’s on display. The exhibition runs until Sunday, September 25 and is open from 1pm-7pm daily at The Loading Bay Gallery, Unit 4- 5, Dray Walk, 91 Brick Lane, London, E1 6QL.

On Thursday, September 22, there will be a special playback of Nevermind, followed by a a session with a guest panel. Limited to just 100 people, tickets cost £15. For the rest of the time, it’s free entry.

Local fact: Crossfire’s James Sherry (below) wrote the foreword for the Exhibition that you can read on the right hand side wall as you walk in.

Vans Downtown Showdown London video part 1

I’m sure it’s safe to say that you’ve all probably already seen the edits and highlights of the brilliant Vans Downtown Showdown skate event that was held in London in August this month. Instead of covering the event trick by trick, we decided to focus on an alternative view with the help of hardworking artist, French as he designed the artwork. So this video series will cover the Showdown itself, a guest pro interview and an insight into French’s daily life as part of our Day In The Life skate art series that will all make sense on Halloween this year.

In the first part of three episodes, we kick off the day in question at French’s gaff by waking up the Antiz guys and heading over to Spitalfields Market to see what went down. Be sure to tune in next week where we interviewed ‘The Mayor of the Piss Drunks’ and Vans pro Dustin Dollin.

Tony Hawk interview

tony_hawkTony Hawk is still the busiest and most dedicated skateboarder on the planet, and proved exactly that when he stopped overnight in London last month to inspire kids to support the Laureus project. This foundation uses the power of sport to help tackle pressing social challenges through a worldwide programme of sports related community development initiatives so we popped down to East London to see him box with the locals and discuss the past, present and future.

This video interview covers the Sport For Good Foundation, reminiscing the 1988 Bones Brigade Tour of Europe at the Latimer Road vert demo and skating the legendary Livingstone Skatepark in Scotland. We also ask Tony about how the Megaramp is making an impact across the planet, the rise of ams on the up, the growing popularity of indoor training facilities in the US, plus an insight into the forthcoming Bones Brigade documentary that is being put together right now by Stacy Peralta.

Click play for the full interview by Matthew Bromley and big thanks to Laureus for the invite and photos. Visit the Quiksilver UK site here.
