DC, Monster and Fifty Fifty Big Three Jam Bristol

Video edit and words by Rich Smith

The rescheduled ‘Gert Big Three‘ comp almost didn’t take place due to yet again more unfortunate British weather circumstances (rain on and off all day!) The sun came out for just enough time later in the afternoon for the set to dry (ish) and a session to go down!

First place and £500 went to an NBD fakie front side heel flip from Korahn Gayle. 2nd place with £250 went to Ash Dixon with a frontside flip, back side heelflip then robbed on a few nollie backside flips before slaming his face into the unforgiving slippery tiles of Lloyds. 3rd place went to Ollie Lock with a bolts front shuv, not to mention the numerous impossibles he landed on before the floor got to wet, avit next time kid!

After landing but not rolling countless trayflips down the three during the comp lil Joe Mercer stepped up for some overtime and got his personal NBD treflip at the end of the session, clean as a whistle! Stoked! Keep an eye on www.5050store.com for updates on the next Big Three Jam which will be happening some time in April ’12 when it’s not bloody raining! Thanks to all who attended, BIG UP!

Emerica Hopi Chiller Shoe review

If you are in need of a chiller right now, Emerica have these brand new Hopi’s available for the more laid back skater out there. Inspired by Andrew Reynolds’ desire to chill after a skate sesh, the Hopi is made from a thick, hand sewn suede and comes with a natural gum rubber outsole. These are as flat as pancakes, but don’t let that put you off as they are also the perfect chiller to have on whilst mooching round your house where you really don’t require any shoe with a heel anyway.

These simple and comfy bohemian shoes definitely bring the native indian, wild west look and also come with beads that you can take off easily. Especially if you are not looking to rock that Ben Jobe vibe and randomly huck out your magic flute at any moment whilst making a cuppa. You should also be aware that due to their tendency to look like one of those shoes you find at the pet shop, you should probably keep them out of reach if you keep a young canine in your yard, otherwise these could be mistaken for treats and be chewed apart.

After being in denial about ordering a pair of these, i’m now at one with my Hopi’s and they are doing a splendid job of making my life more chilled. As the long, cold nights start to roll in this autumn, you may want to think about getting yourself a pair and feeling the same comfort.

Plans for new skatepark on Clapham Common revealed

London’s skateboarders are waking up to news this morning that there’s movement behind the scenes of the development of Clapham Common‘s rugged land. Famous for its involvement in the Urban Games that used to be held there, the park has deteriorated over the years and locals have been working with the council for funding to develop the area.

Freestyle Skateparks are involved in the pitch that is expected to be built before the end of this year. The image you see on this page is subject to formal approval by Lambeth Council this October, but you can see that the existing tarmac area of 1500m2 is being resurfaced with a high grade tarmac and within this area will sit a circa, 500m2 concrete new build. The surrounding area of the concrete will have numerous isolated forms such as blocks and manual pads so it looks good for South London’s skate scene so far.

Keep your fingers crossed that the council approve the build next month and well done to all involved. Look out for updates on the Freestyle FB page.

Danny Goldberg interview on Cobain, Nirvana & Nevermind

You have probably noticed that the internet right now is talking a lot of Nirvana, and reminiscing on a lot of grunge related topics due to the 20th Anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind record. At the time of its release, the band were managed by Danny Goldberg and John Silva at Gold Mountain Management in the USA who watched this album’s popularity grow overnight and then explode. This week at Music Radar, Goldberg is interviewed and discusses discovering the band and how Nevermind became a phenomenon.

Read the full interview here and get an inside scoop of the band that killed off soft rock overnight with quotes like this:

You know, Kurt didn’t become a star by accident, he became a star on purpose. Then he found out he didn’t like everything that came with being a star. It was hard for him. He didn’t like being recognized on the street or in airports, and stuff like that. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t want to be successful, because he absolutely did.”
