NOFX & Alkaline Trio live at Brixton Academy

NOFX/Alkaline Trio
Brixton Academy
July 5th 2015

nofx_brixton“I’d have a go at the front row for being old and fat, but I think that’d be a bit pot-kettle-black these days!” Capdown frontman Jake Sims-Fielding may indeed be looking a bit silver around the temples, but his band’s supercharged ska-core attack still hits the mark after all these years, with the likes of ‘Cousin Cleotis’ and ‘Pound For The Sound’ filling the Academy like very few opening bands can. Never quite hitting the heights reached by so many of their US counterparts, the Milton Keynes quartet were much loved by those in the know, and tonight that love is justified once again.

Lagwagon, in contrast, have spent most of their 25 year existence in the shadow of their labelmates NOFX, and whilst you can’t fault the Californians for effort, they’re hampered by sub-par sound and a relative lack of genuinely great songs. The crowd seem slightly subdued after the in-your-face fury of Capdown, and only a late rendition of ‘Alienate’ truly gets things moving again.

Ding-ding, round one of the Classic Albums In Their Entirety face-off. In the red (and black) corner, Chicago’s finest, Alkaline Trio, who seem to have barely aged in the last decade, and come armed with ‘From Here To Infirmary’. Personally, I’d have preferred to hear its predecessor, ‘Maybe I’ll Catch Fire’, but ‘…Infirmary’ is a fine second best, and is notably the album that marked their first visit to UK shores. Matt Skiba & co. don’t waste words as they get stuck in, and even lesser-known cuts like ‘Take Lots With Alcohol’ and ‘Steamer Trunk’ are received like black-humored manna. It’s a set that’s largely bereft of surprises, but overflowing with tunes, and they get bonus points for an epic closing rendition of ‘Radio’.

Round two, and in the green corner it’s NOFX, with 1994’s ‘Punk In Drublic’ set for an airing. Three decades into the game and Fat Mike’s crew can still bamboozle us; why bother simply playing your magnum opus straight when you could mix it up with a bunch of other (mostly equally good) songs, numerous wisecracks, impersonations and general messing around? Lesser bands probably couldn’t get away with it, but these guys have a certain chemistry, and they also have ‘The Cause’, ‘Linoleum’ and ‘Don’t Call Me White’ to whip any self-respecting pit (including tonight’s) into a maelstrom. Irreverent to the end, yet arguably the only band here tonight who seem truly comfortable on the Academy’s huge stage, NOFX’s revisit of past glories sounds pretty damn fine in the here and now.

‘Destroyed’
Box Records

NME to go free from September

NME_Cover

One of our most treasured and longest running music publications, the NME, is set to be distributed for free across the UK beginning this coming Autumn.

In print since 1952, the New Musical Express held the market share of music weeklies for years, continually outselling it’s rivals, Melody Maker, Sounds and Record Mirror, with sales figures regularly reaching the 300,000 mark through the 1970s. 20 times more than today’s 15,000 per week figures, which have been falling on the ABC Circulation stats for years.

Regardless, since launching online in 1996 the magazine has remained a benchmark taste-maker in the music press, and while some deem the forthcoming transition to a free paper as a sorry move and potential devaluation of it’s content and position, the magazine’s editor Mike Williams details the move as an evolution and positive step into the future.

Published today on NME.com, Williams explained –

The cat is out of the bag, and I couldn’t be more excited. For the past few months we’ve been working in secret here at NME on the next phase of our evolution. The goal, throughout all of our research and development, has been to find new and inventive ways to connect with you, our audience, better than ever. In the 63 years since NME launched we have evolved and transformed plenty of times. The evolution of 2015 is our boldest ever move, and I’m delighted to be able to share the news with you at last.

Although NME have stated that music is “firmly at the heart of the brand”, they have revealed the new issue will explore content focusing more so on “film, fashion, television, politics, gaming and technology”. How will this shape the future of the UK music press? Leave a comment below and tell us what you think.

Grohl Returns To The Throne

grohl_throne

Having broken his leg after falling from the stage last month at a gig in Gothenburg, Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters were forced to cancel a headline slot at Glastonbury last weekend, and a run of sold out shows at Wembley Stadium.

Hell bent on delivering to his fans, Friday night saw Grohl and his band return to the stage at Washington DC’s RFK Stadium for a 4th July celebration. The show saw the frontman bandaged and cast, atop a gigantic throne built from guitars, amps and ‘lasers and shit’, hand-drawn plans of which are pictured above.

Watch the clips below which detail Grohl’s original fall and a rendition of ‘The Pretender’.

Sludge super-group incoming!

ty_segall_SUPER_GROUP

We all know Ty Segall likes a good ol’ knees up ’round the old Joanna, dipping his psychedelic toes into side projects and collaborations under the guise of Fuzz, The Traditional Fools, Sic Alps, White Fence and many more, not to mention eight studio albums under his own name.

Today, we discover Segall’s involvement in a new band called Broken Bat, and it’s quite possibly the most exciting super group you’ll hear about this year. Featuring Segall himself, the Melvins’ Dale Crover on drums, and OFF!/Redd Kross bassist Steven McDonald, the trio have just revealed a teaser song snippet on BandCamp titled ‘Take My Medicine’.

Stream this sludge nugget below and stay tuned for more.

Obstruct

obstructObstruct
Loss of Blood
Carry The Weight Records

The Northern hardcore scene has a strong DIY history and background of producing killer music. Perhaps it’s something to do with the lack of a heavy music industry/major label presence, perhaps it’s just something in the water, but the crop of bands coming out of Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool etc. recently has been uniformly fucking brilliant.

Obstruct are continuing this tradition from the small town confines of Huddersfield, with their new album Loss of Blood harnessing their furious straight edge hardcore punk to create the gnarliest record of 2015 so far. With influences apparent from early Voorhees, Walk the Plank and Creem, the band don’t let up as they storm through 11 tracks which rarely break the 1 and a half minute mark.

Listening to track after track of blistering hardcore, you get the sensation of being punched repeatedly in the head by a fist of sound as the pace and energy refuse to let up, though this isn’t to say there is no delineation between songs. While the formula never strays far from full speed ahead, with distorted basslines and pounding drums to the fore, a sense of melody emerges from somewhere within the chaos and helps to make songs like ‘Infection’ and ‘Instigate’ stand out through the Blitz-style guitar.

This is music that goes straight from ear canals to adrenalin gland, a shot of aural caffeine which will probably fuel skateboarding missions for some time to come for yours truly. Add a hint of darkness to your summer and get hold of a copy from Carry The Weight Records.
