If you were born after 1990 then it’s more than likely that you will not have a clue about Grange Hill. It was an amazing daily dose of top acting and kid dramas aired on the BBC in the 1980’s and had more characters than a libel-provoking tweet.
Regardless of your age and your knowledge of Tucker and co in the hit TV show, press play on this solid mash-up of the classic Grange Hill theme tune vs Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and Eminem. This will have Roland reaching out for a creme puff and hitting the dancefloor without a doubt. Addictive.
A specially curated, new mash up of DJ Shadow’s ‘I Gotta Rokk’ track has been released for free download by London turntablist surgeon STEREO:TYPE and IRN MNKY today.
Commissioned alongside six other incredible artists by Xfm’s Eddy Temple-Morris, STEREO:TYPE was invited to create a new mix using the former UNKLE members’ tracks, in a tribute to his career in music. The new mash-up was aired on the Xfm Remix Show last Friday and blends classic samples from Guns N’Roses, The Prodigy and Led Zeppelin cut into DJ Shadow’s beats.

“The reason I asked STEREO:TYPE for this DJ Shadow mix was simple.” Eddy Temple Morris explains. “STEREO:TYPE was the author of, without a word of exaggeration, the best mix anyone has ever done for The Remix show in my near 13 year tenure at Xfm. My approaching Chris STEREO:TYPE came with DJ Shadow’s blessing too, and the man himself acknowledged Chris as a kindred spirit and sonic perfectionist.”
Both Eddy and STEREO:TYPE will headline the decks of the Battersea Barge for this year’s Crossfire Halloween Massacre on Saturday October 27th

Bumper
Rhymesayers Entertainment/Doomtree Records
It’s been over three years since P.O.S dropped his last album, the superb Never Better but he’s been a busy guy. Not content with making his own records, Stefon Alexander has been involved with his crew Doomtree’s last album, the brilliantly titled group Marijuana Death Squads and guests spots for artists as eclectic as Gayngs and Dark Time Sunshine, so we can forgive him for taking his time over the new album.
Having heard a new track live when Doomtree supported Yelawolf in London earlier this year, his love of electronic music came to the fore with the bouncing beats kicking the crowd into a frenzy and with Bumper, another track from his upcoming full-length We Don’t Even Live Here, that influence is continued. The pounding drums lay the foundation for a track which on which the rapper boasts “they on some nonsense, we on some non-stop” as the jarring chorus melody and unrelenting bassline do the rest.
If this is a sign of what’s to come from the Minneapolitan, then 2012 is going to be an even bigger year for hip hop. Check out the video of Stef performing the track live and see how long you can last without pressing the reply button. We bet it won’t be more than five seconds.
With a chorus catchy enough to entice a bit of a sing-a-long but with a tempo slow enough to make sure you don’t have to put a lot of effort in, ‘Toucan Surf’ (released Digitally 27.08.12 via Rattlepop) is the soundtrack to a lazy afternoon in the sun. In fact, soundtrack is quite a key word here, because Jaws produce the sort of sound that doesn’t instantly demand your attention but is inviting enough to give you an overall uplifting feeling. ‘Toucan Surf’ is background music that will slowly manifest in your mind and eventually come through and repeat permanently in your conscious.
Dazed vocals, resounding jangling guitars and lo-fi synths give off impressions that the track was born in Florida, California or another suitably sunny location, a sizable achievement when it actually originates from the less than appetizing Birmingham, UK.
‘Surf-pop’ is a trending genre at the moment, but Jaws aren’t just any old band, they are the leaders of the pack, these guys are the ultimate chill-out indie band and ‘Toucan Surf’ is sure to propel the band to where they ought to be.

When Tame Impala‘s first EP dropped into my ears in 2008, those 5 tracks were played on repeat over and over again and I never managed to get bored of them do this day. I still get shudders when i hear ‘Half Full Glass Of Wine‘ but they were soon shut down when they released their debut album Innerspeaker dropped in 2010. It just didn’t feel the same. The anticipation from that first EP had spoiled my expectations and the full length disappointed me but turned on thousands more.
Today they have released their first offering of what is coming in October from the their second full length titled Lonerism, and now i’m right back their in the repeat phase once again; chomping on aural delights and swimming in their psychedelic, Australian haze that I was craving for. Put this new track in your pipe and smoke it today. i’m pretty sure this could well be some of their best work yet.
Apocalypse Dreams is out there from today as a free download, grab it from the widget below and note that tickets for their UK tour in October have been announced today too.
October 30 – Brixton Academy – London, UK
November 1 – Ritz – Manchester, UK
November 2 – Leadmill – Sheffield, UK
November 3 – ABC – Glasgow, UK
An immense yet disconcerting music video accompanies this single which is the first to be taken from The Hickey Underworld‘s forthcoming second album. Can you figure out what’s going on in the below? Because we’re not entirely sure. Could be any number of scenarios leading to the neverending-suicide-attempt-loop. Definitely some fucked-up shit. The starring roles are taken by the members of the band and the single itself also has that unnerving air about it. A darkly driven riff with vocals edging towards a pained howl yet somehow sounding calm and collected at the same time. Basically cool-as-fuck.
This is an achingly brilliant piece of off-kilter rock and roll and when it’s played live, the volume is ramped up with both instrumentals and vocals making such a visceral and alarming impact that the air is knocked clean out of your lungs. And you may be left a little deaf.
2012 will undoubtedly be the year that Deathgrips top the polls for the most innovative music out there. Due to the flood gates unleashing a million boring musical projects a month across the internet that get hyped one week and forgotten the next, Deathgrips have progressed from mixtape hype to insane live shows and major label backing fueled by their incredible knack of making electrifying music. They are simply light year’s ahead of the pack.
This week they released Double Helix, another dose of infectious media from the album The Money Store that sees vocalist Stefan Burnett cocking the hammer and busting the thunder from the rear-view camera of a reversing vehicle.
“So you really wanna know how I freak it?” – Yes mate, because we are intrigued to find out how your unique skeletal system is bombin’ it. Watch this. Take it in and pass it on. Sick.
‘Honey’
Released on Superdark/Handspun Records
July 9th
Rediscovering edgy music from the early 90s is no bad thing in 2012 especially if one is able to also smell the sweat that drips from the toil that goes into high energy live sets aligned with the crunch of distorted guitar chords. That is exactly what you can expect from seeing, hearing and being part of an Arrows of Love show. This London 5 piece made up of two girls and three guys can make a serious racket, yet seem to pull it off with a subtle ease that makes you want more once the guitars are launched into the amps and the drums have come crashing down at the end of the set.
On July 9th, this East London noise fest will release a new single called Honey, a track that starts like the story of the 3 pigs. It huffs, it puffs and then it blows your house down. Recorded in singer Nima Teranchi’s basement with assistance from Rory Attwell (Test Icicles, S.C.U.M, Male Bonding) and Richard Warren (Spiritualized), Honey takes you back to where punk and indie rock collide to form a DIY sound only found in a basement. It’s also justice that Bob Weston from Shellac mastered Nima’s mixes, again, once he had downloaded a ‘Teach yourself how to mix’ manual.
If this is the first offering from their forthcoming debut album this year then get get hyped and go see them live soon.
24th May – The Macbeth pt III – ‘Honey’ Cassette Release, London 15th June – Buffalo Bar – with Antlered Man 9th July – The Kasbah – Coventry 17-19th Aug – Strummer of Love Festival 1st Sept – 1234 Festival, Shoreditch Park
Brooklyn is long established in delivery amazing indie acts worth shouting about. From The Strokes, LCD Sound System, Dirty Projectors to TV On The Radio, we’ve got a band to tout in the form of Total Slacker. A garage indie outfit with lazy, psychedelic, riff-laden melodies, this is a band that will have a cult following in the years to come.
You may already come across them as their the single Video Store Rental Guy was featured in Kai Neville’s surf film Lost Atlas and their single Crystal Necklace reached #36 on Pitchfork readers poll.
All references aside, we know you’re going to love this, so point your mouse to the video below and press that play button. Do it!
Weird luck is when you are on the web doing stuff and then the next thing you know, you are listening to a new band from Brooklyn who are blowing your ears off within seconds of pressing the play button. That’s how we discovered Life Size Maps here who release a 3 track EP this month.
This trio have some quality noise on offer that sits above some fantastic pop melodies fueled by Mike McKeever’s brash guitars and warming vocals, Jordyn Blakely’s powerful drums and some amazing cello playing from Rob Karpay. Now, the cello may sound like an odd call, but the production on opening track Weird Luck is a masterful mix of noisy indie rock led by a fantastic synth piece that swirls and drives its anthemic chords into a very welcome sonic explosion!
The melodies within these 3 tracks are irresistably catchy. When Wind In The Furnace breaks into its uplifting chorus, euphoria is unleashed on an epic scale accompanied by another heavy pounding of noise. No change here for third track Copper Mirror that ends this listening experience on yet another musical high with stabbing guitars, psych synth and yet another huge chorus. It’s addictive, it’s loud but it’s also beautifully crafted, so let’s hope that this band are able to drive by map and appear in London sometime soon.
Download this EP for free from here and watch this clip of the band playing in Williamsburg, NYC to get the full picture.
