Goldblade

GOLDBLADE
‘The Terror of Modern Life’
Overground Records
Facebook

This is the fifth album from Goldblade, and I am kicking myself somewhat for having left it temporarily gathering dust on my review pile, because it’s an absolute belter. Brother John Robb and his Comrades of The Golden Blade deliver thirteen robust songs here, bursting with rocking energy and rousing choruses that lay bare a vision of modern day Broke and Broken Britain. The messages contained are shrouded in cynicism, which is honestly not too hard when you take a look around you. The bleak reality on the ground runs contrary to the Feel Good Dictates spoon-fed us by those goons in the Ministry of Truth.

Right from the off, and the explosive “This is War”, Goldblade crank up the jams with some mighty powerful dark, twisted, and foaming at the mouth Punk Rock. There’s a brief interlude in momentum for the outstanding Ruts recalling dub/rocker “Serious Business”, but otherwise it’s crash, bang and wallop right thru to the crashing chords and sonic cacophony of the closing number.

This is spirited music, a red-hot jukebox of hits that taps in to the unforgettable energy of greats like The Clash, UK Subs, DK’s and Adolescents. Recommended.

The Body Rampant

The Body Rampant
‘Storm Banadage’

Facebook

thebodyrampantWith a barrage of riffs cutting through like razorwire from the outset, Storm Bandage is the first track to be released of The Body Rampant’s debut album. It’s crisp and clean but hard hitting, produced by the legend that is Brian McTernan. With some old school emo style melodies, The Body Rampant give a taster of what’s to come with their full length – ‘Midnight Mayfair’ is an album which promises a kaleidoscope of snapshots into a conceptual character’s life and death.

Hailing from Southern California, The Body Rampant use some interesting imagery, employing the use of some rather freakish masks for photos and videos. Their soundscapes do contain that tinge of prog and old school emo yet the melodies have hooks galore and you can’t help but sing along. Definitely recommended if you’re into Deftones, Circa Survive and / or Thrice.

AC4

AC4
‘Burn The World’
(Deathwish/Ny Vag)

While Refused were intent on pushing punk rock forward, tearing and ripping up the rule book and starting again, frontman Dennis Lyxzen has both feet placed firmly in the eighties with the old school hardcore punk attack of AC4. ‘Burn The World’ is the band’s second album, released on both Lyxzen’s Ny Vag label and Converge’s Deathwish imprint, and continues their straight–up, high-speed, snotty hardcore attack.

Whilst AC4 offer nothing new or fresh to the musical world, who really gives a damn when it sounds this fun? It’s impossible not to get swept up in the band’s infectious joy as they obviously love and pay the utmost respect to the music they are aping. Energy and enthusiasm crackles from every single one of the sixteen tracks here. The production is powerful and heavy yet manages to retain an important fizzy garage feel that suits the bands energy and Lyxzen’s vocals are snotty and snarled, yet melodic.

Sweden has offered so many great punk bands over recent years. Bands such as Regulations, The Vicious, UX Vileheads and now AC4, have effortlessly taped into the life-affirming energy that legends like 7-Seconds, Minor Threat and the like laid out all those years ago. AC4 take the baton, and run with it at high speed.

Jeff Hanneman’s death alcohol related

The autopsy results of Slayer guitarist/founder Jeff Hanneman came back with alcohol related issues from a statement that the band released overnight. The band are also currently planning to issue a public celebration of Jeff’s life “sometime later this month”.

“We’ve just learned that the official cause of Jeff’s death was alcohol related cirrhosis. While he had his health struggles over the years, including the recent Necrotizing fasciitis infection that devastated his well-being, Jeff and those close to him were not aware of the true extent of his liver condition until the last days of his life. Contrary to some reports, Jeff was not on a transplant list at the time of his passing, or at any time prior to that. In fact, by all accounts, it appeared that he had been improving – he was excited and looking forward to working on a new record.”

The full statement with personal tributes from all of the Slayer family can be found here

As I Lay Dying singer Tim Lambesis arrested

As I Lay Dying vocalist Tim Lambesis has been arrested this week after allegedly trying to hire an undercover detective he believed was a hit man to take out his estranged wife Meggan Lambesis. The Christian lead singer had filed for divorce back in September.

The band made a statement overnight on what must be a very difficult situation.

“To our fans,

As we post this, the legal process is taking its course and we have no more information than you do. There are many unanswered questions, and the situation will become clearer in the coming days and weeks. We’ll keep you informed as best we can.

Our thoughts right now are with Tim, his family, and with everyone else affected by this terrible situation – and with our fans, whom we love and draw strength from.

Thank you for understanding, and as always, for your support of As I Lay Dying.

– Jordan, Nick, Phil, and Josh”

Religious blogger attacked by Slayer fans?

A story has emerged stating a religious nut has taken a serious kick-in from Metal fans this week following the death of former guitarist and Slayer founder Jeff Hanneman.

Allegedly Religious blogger Manfred Peregrine had tweeted that he was going to picket Hanneman’s wake and the burial of his body alongside other faith members. His outbursts apparently caused much offense which led to the Christian right wing protester hospitalised after a savage attack by Slayer fans.

It is reported today that he suffered “several broken bones, a concussion and …a pole shoved in his ass”. Hmmmnn…

Never fuck with Slayer fans and don’t believe the hype.

Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman dead

Slayer have announced that guitarist and co-founder Jeff Hanneman died yesterday after suffering liver failure. Hanneman was 49 years old, and passed in his Southern Californian home.

“Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11am this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 – 2013)”

Hanneman was bitten by a spider 3 years ago and had a bad reaction to it leading to complications as explained on Slayer’s website: “There was talk that he might have to have his arm amputated, and we didn’t know if he was going to pull through at all. He was in a medically-induced coma for a few days and had several operations to remove the dead and dying tissue from his arm. So, understand, he was in really, really bad shape.”

Since then, he had several painful skin grafts and had joined the band onstage for his last show at The Big Four show at Coachella whilst continuing his rehabilitation. Unfortunately his liver gave up on him.

This is extremely sad news. RIP. Our thoughts go out to all family and friends. Long live Slayer. We hope that this allows the band members to pull together and work together following what has been a difficult year for them all. Skate to Slayer all weekend for Jeff.

Top 10 Free Indie Tracks

Photo: Bryce Kanights

Does your pocket player need a new selection of free tunes? If so, this list is made up of all sorts of dreamy, scuzzy, shoegaze, indie goodness, plus a couple of noise-laden treats for good measure. Not all music should be free, a huge amount of effort goes into writing and recording these, so stream, listen and download at will, but don’t forget to support the bands you like so we can do this all over again soon.

Dave Palmer

Pissed Jeans – Bathroom Laughter

Sub Pop’s sludgy legends Pissed Jeans opens this smash and grab and is by far the noisiest option from this selection. Their new album ‘Honeys’ was album of the month here in February. Take ‘Bathroom Laughter’ away as a taster of what absolute annihilation lies within this album. It’s one of the very best long players of 2013 in our opinion.

Splashh – Sun Kissed Bliss

Splashh bring some beautiful sun-tinged dreamy pop to this top ten with a free download of ‘Sun Kissed Bliss’. Keep an eye on this lot.

Cold Pumas – Fog Cutter

This minimalist, scuzzy three piece have a textural shower on offer here. Taken from their debut album, Persistent Malaise, this metronomic mist is a true toe tapper. Download it from their guitarist’s D.I.Y label ‘Faux Discx’ Soundcloud.

Novella – Don’t Believe Ayn Rand

Dreamy London trio Novella have a concrete collection of singles and EP’s, but one of their earlier tracks encouraging their audience to disregard a certain Russian novelist happens to be one of my favourites.

Male Bonding – Demos

London rockers Male Bonding have three rough and ready demos they recorded in their practice room up for grabs.

Honeyslide – Drippin’

Melancholic fuzz makers Honeyslide have a double A side coming out in June that you should investigate but for now you can download their soaking wet, shoegaze steez here.

Bayy – Doctor

Brighton based foursome Bayy are small fish in a big pond with only a handful of shows under their belts but definitely worth checking out. Get the scoop over at their Soundcloud for free downloads of ‘Doctor’ and ‘Aquarium’.

Teardrop Factory – Vanity Unfair

If you like lo-fi, fractured indie-rock then you should download ‘Vanity Unfair’. Teardrop Factory have an E.P due in late May so this should be the perfect introduction via a dose of kaleidoscopic fuzz right here.

Sauna Youth – Psi Girls

Sauna Youth make an unusual, angular breed of punk noise and it sounds fucking cool. Having shared the stage with some Crossfire favourites this year, (namely Parquet Courts and Pissed Jeans) I was more than excited to download ‘Psi Girls’.

Drenge – Necromance is Dead

The Drenge brothers kicked off their summer tour with Temples last week, and in celebration they’re offering a free download of ‘Necromance Is Dead’. Snap this up.
