Crossfire Xmas Jam 2011 results

Surrounded by blue skies and a winter chill, the Crossfire Xmas Jam warmed a few hundred people at Bay 66 Skatepark yesterday. The rain held, the skateboarding poured and only four people managed to spill blood on the day. Thankfully there were no broken bones to talk about.

Manny Lopez came off worse by running into Tim Prozorov and suffered a collision injury that forced the ambulance service to drive him to the nearest hospital for stitches. Adrenaline was needed to slow down the bleeding so it could be stitched up so he will be feeling sore this morning. Get well soon Manny, we all missed watching you skate.

Some big stuff went down in this session. Notable mentions to Chroliver, Nowik, Cullen, Raemers, Zwijsen, Collins and many more for all day shredding and of course, the legendary Mark Brewster’s vocal skills on the mic all day. Churchill has got nothing on this cat. Look out for a video edit and a photo gallery very soon and thanks to all who got off their backsides to get amongst it with us on the day.

A rowdy crowd filled the after party who roared along to the premiere of the Kill City Skateboards Rookies DVD. It was the first time some of the team riders had seen the film due to a trip to Barcelona last week and it did not disappoint. Beers were raised, the film dropped its hammers and there should be some tasty hangovers out there today.

Big thanks to all who drove for miles to share these good times and make these events work plus all of the staff at Bay 66 Skatepark, and our associate sponsors Slam City Skates Plan B, Flip and Superdead Skateboards

More big shouts out to Heroin, Death, Drawing Boards, Science, Crayon, Kill City, Lovenskate and Blueprint Skateboards, Andy Evans and Sam May for being involved in a another great day of skateboarding.

This jam was for Bingo on his Birthday. RIP.

Shake Junt Chicken Bone Nowison

shake_junt_chicken_boneShake Junt is famous for making griptape and lumps of wax so anyone who didn’t know better would be safe in assuming their video consisted of cutting room floor clips that conjure up as much excitement as a tax bill. Well, stereotypes are made to be broken and filmer Beagle-Oneism and his buddies definitely smash any preconceptions with Chicken Bone Nowison.

There’s a reason why teenagers around the world are painting everything green and gold and neglect the traditional handshake for a double slap and pound combination. The industry runs on trends and Shake Junt are running the show right now. This is pretty amazing when you consider that all they do is deal hardware and scream obscure phrases, but when you look closer you’re quick to notice that Shake Junt is a subsidiary of the Baker-Deathwish camp which in turn means some of the biggest and best names in skateboarding are riding under their flag. As a result, Chicken Bone Nowison is anything but cutting room floor footage. Beagle-Oneism has gathered new footage, tour footage, off cuts from this year’s major releases and various other hi-jinks to create an hour long trip with some of skateboarding’s heaviest hitters.

Andrew Reynolds, Bryan Herman, Dustin Dollin, Justin Figueroa, Neen Williams, Theotis Beasley, Jeff Lenoce, Braydon Szafranski, Shane Heyl, Beagle-Oneism, Don Nyguen and new recruits Pat “Sinner” Pasquale and Mike White have parts as well as a couple of friends sections thrown in for good measure. The only person missing from the video (even though you spot him lurking) is Jim Greco. I was surprised to see he didn’t have any tricks as he rips.

Rather than go into detail, here are a few things Yays and Nays about Chicken Bone Nowison:

Neen Williams has some of the most beautiful heelflips in the game.

Jeff Lenoce finally came through with a real part that should prove the naysayers wrong.

– Even though some might find them annoying, Shane Heyl and Beagle-Oneism display genuine excitement and motivation which can only have a very positive effect on skateboarders trying to get tricks in an anti-skate city like Los Angeles.

Terry Kennedy handling business like a boss.

– Unfortunately Antwuan Dixon fans will be disappointed especially when they see that his few tricks are twinned with that of Neckface.

– “Look mum, no hands!” jumping out of hotel windows into swimming pools is highly inadvisable. Whoever does jump is merely centimetres away from meeting their maker.

– Spray painting someone’s face isn’t a good idea either!

– Dustin Dollin (interview) proves yet again that you can skate anything and rip it apart.

– A very cynical person might remark that certain skaters are a bit like one trick ponies that filmed every possible variation of a specific trick on various spots. Haters gonna hate…

– With so many skaters and so many styles, the soundtrack is varied. Everything from mixtape tracks to Lemmy set the rhythm for the footage and it’s all-good.

In the category of hardware company videos Chicken Bone Nowison sits head and shoulders above the rest. The skating and positive vibe of the video are the major strengths which should guarantee that you get yourself a copy and watch it several times. If the tricks don’t convince you, the title jingle definitely will.

Kill City Rookies premiere pics from Cardiff

The Kill City team were out in force last night in their home town of Cardiff to premiere their new DVD, Rookies at the Buffalo Bar.

It can be described in one post from Dan Joyce who wrote on Dainton’s wall this morning:

“Just when skating got boring and predictable, just what it needed, well done.”

Dainton sent us one sentence as the fresh hangover kicked in: “What an excellent night for an exorcism…”

As far as premiere’s go this one was the big one. Even the riders hadn’t seen the film so it was with big anticipation the audience was shouting for Dainton to press play on the DVD. I know Newport will be the punk rock premier but Cardiff was in high spirits too. The team was split between Cardiff and Barcelona on the night but every rider, present or not got the big reception as the parts flew by. Everyone has seen the regular Kill City edits that appear online but this whole video is fresh footage and put together seamlessly. Not wanting to spoil the surprises for the next week of premiere’s, this whole video has style; visually and through the skating too. Dainton’s filming is fast moving and Kill City have put the time, the miles and the energy into this film. The Cardiff premiere was the start of a big week for Rookies. It’s a great team performance and a sick video, make the effort and get to see this film quick! – Jono Atkinson.

Here’s some images shot for us thanks to Jono. If you are viewing this from Wales then don’t miss tonight’s screening in Newport at Le Pub and this Saturday after the Crossfire Xmas Jam with the full team at Mau Mau’s in Portobello road and expect 100% skateboarding as the film is obviously nothing like the trailers.

Pritchard vs Dainton Reflections 2011

pritchardvsdaintonTwo of skateboarding’s most colourful characters came through our office at the very end of November unannounced, so we took the opportunity to find out exactly what Dirty Sanchez duo Matt Pritchard and Lee Dainton got up to throughout 2011 and the highlights throughout the year.

They have spent time on the road performing their Pritchard vs Dainton stage show where, quite frankly, they get hurt for the pleasure of many onlookers, annihilated themselves for charity and have still made time to love skateboarding. Click play for a Reflections feature and also find out more about the Kill City Skateboards DVD release ‘Rookies’ that will be dropping this December into your local skate shop.

Lucien Clarke and Nugget Live for London

lucien_clarke_nuggetI woke up yesterday gutted to be living in London after my girlfriend’s bike was nicked overnight. Today is different. It’s too easy to get sucked into the negs of this City but thankfully people like Tyrone Lebon document the warmth that is also brings to many people.

These 2 clips featuring Nugget and Lucien Clarke were released this week. Taste some of the goodness London brings when the sun shines people, it may even make your day too.
