DEVO to release new album

DEVO_Miracle_Witness_Hour

In 1977 DEVO played an intimate show at The Eagle Street Saloon in Cleveland, Ohio. Unknown to many onlookers, this performance was recorded to tape and is about to see it’s first release this December.

Miracle Witness Hour is said to include raw, primitive versions of classics such as ‘Jocko Homo’ and ‘Mongoloid’, as well as some of their more experimental gems.

Due for release December 1st via Futurismo Records, Miracle Witness Hour is a release for the collectors, featuring a reversible sleeve with rare, unseen images and brand new liner notes by DEVO founding member Gerald Casale.

J Mascis

J_Mascis_Tied_To_A_StarJ Mascis
Tied To A Star
Sub Pop

Some were shocked when J Mascis used a synth on the opener to recent Dinosaur Jr album I Bet On Sky. Some were more surprised that the man behind the ear-bleeding band had released a (whisper it) “folky solo album”. Many were amused to see J dressed as a cult leader in the video for lead single ‘Every Morning’ from his second solo album Tied To A Star on Funny Or Die. Those people didn’t know the might of Mascis, but it’s been obvious all along to those who’ve looked close enough.

This album may be solo but it doesn’t lack punch, just like the adventures in synth didn’t turn Dinosaur into Depeche Mode. J’s always been able to craft a great song, ranging from the pop-like ‘Freak Scene’ to emo-ish ‘Out There’, it’s just that where it was once wrapped in a maelstrom of noise, here it’s more exposed, and, (without sounding wet) more beautiful. He’s also always had a sense of humour – think of that great Spike Jonze directed ‘Feel The Pain’ video with its urban golf and J’s plus fours and Pringles. And just look at that white beard which he wears so well. J was made to be a cult leader if ever I saw one.

There’s some real stand out moments on Tied To A Star, including opener ‘Me Again’ (lest we could ever forget) which displays his trademark vocal range which has aged like an oak-smoked whisky, and the aforementioned ‘Every Morning’ featuring Chan “the greatest” Marshall from Cat Power. There’s also the appealing Shangri-la-la-land of ‘Heal The Star’ and the poignant ‘Wide Awake’ – two ends of a phone call between lovers from a more innocent pre-Snapchat era. J Mascis’ star in rock music is assured, but it’s still shining brightly, even with the amp turned down below 5, and I’m still happy to hitch myself to it.

Kim Gordon announces memoirs release for 2015

KIM_GORDON_BOOK

One of, if not the, mightiest women in music Kim Gordon has announced her highly anticipated book release, Girl In A Band, for publication in February 2015.

An icon to many a young musician, Kim Gordon inspired the masses in her Sonic Youth days as the driving force behind Lee, Thurston and Steve. Standing out in an often male dominated scene, Kim fast gained status as an underground hero, and until now has remained a very private person, rarely agreeing to interviews. The upcoming memoir’s blurb was released online today and reads as:

Often described as aloof, Kim Gordon truly opens up in Girl in a Band. Telling the story of her childhood, her life in art, her move to New York City, her love affairs, her marriage, her relationship with her daughter, and her band, this is a rich and beautifully written memoir. At the heart of the book is the examination of what partnership means—and what happens when it dissolves. An atmospheric look at the New York of the 80s and 90s that gave rise to Sonic Youth, as well as the Alternative revolution in popular music that Sonic Youth helped usher in, paving the way for Nirvana, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins and many other acts. One of the most revered people in modern rock and roll, Kim Gordon is also a highly regarded fashion icon, visual artist, and the source of much fascination.

Sleaford Mods announce Tiswas EP

sleaford_mods

The relentless Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods have announced a follow up EP to their widely acclaimed 2014 LP Divide and Exit.

November 24th will see the arrival of highly-anticipated new music from front gob Jason Williamson and music master Andrew Fearn in the shape of Tiswas, their new Invada Records EP. Featuring four brand new studio tracks, alongside ‘Tiswas’, lifted from the Divide And Exit album, It will be released on both yellow and orange Tiswas coloured vinyl and digital download.

Jason Williamson explains the EP, track by track:

‘Tiswas’: “An attack on the waning power of guitar based rock n roll and its short-sighted viewpoint combined with the armchair anarchic lobbyists who fucking point their fingers at the masses like c**ts. I know works shit but I’m not putting my daughter on the street to please you c**s.”

‘The Mail Don’t Fail’: “The dross of right wing media. Easy target I know but one that all the same is getting worse. Good people brainwashed by these c***s. Plus another stab at the slow death which is local government and its banal workings.”

‘6 Horseman (the Brixtons)’: “Part fictional account of misguided drug use to fit a stereotyped image in order to sell records. Also a stab at delusional self-images which always end in tears. The people may tow the line but they will eventually tell you to fuck off if you keep telling them you are Elvis. Also a cheeky stab at the purists who inhabit the gig scene, so informed yet so uninformed.”

‘Bunch of C***s’: “Random observations from a city in 2014. Bunch of Cunts also touches on the distain you can sometimes have for your fellow human beings, the despair in conformity, and the despair of your own place in conformity.”

‘The Demon’: “The nickname for a specific leader of an army currently fighting wherever. The cause or the country or the reasons are of no relevance really. War and its on-going trail of death is an enemy of our existence, regardless of fucking wherever or whoever. F*ck the excuses. It’s a money spinner full of ego and extremely insulting methods of justification. F*ck off demon. F*ck off.”

Cloud Castle Lake

Cloud_Castle_LakeCloud Castle Lake
‘A Wolf Howling’
Happy Valley Records

Dublin is kicking out some fine new music this year. With acts like Girl Band and The Number Ones pricking everyone’s ears with their grinding guitar noise, it’s both unexpected and refreshing to hear such elegant and wistful sonics hailing from the city right now.

Cloud Castle Lake set a misleading tone with their hypnotic, tribal rhythms. The deep opening beats and bass blend could easily erupt into a wall of sound or a clatter of fuzz’d riffs yet for once, none of the above applies.

‘A Wolf Howling’ is what some could describe as a slow builder, and what most should deem epic. Over six mesmerising minutes, Cloud Castle Lake mold layers of luscious instrumentation into otherworldly textures and timbres. The creeping bass line, cosmic synthesisers and eerie electronics set a dark and introspective mood, while singer Daniel McAuley steals the show with his haunting vocal. Delicate as it is afflicting, McAuley throws his voice to Thom Yorke levels of wailing, hitting near violin-like frequencies.

With their debut EP, Dandelion, out now on Happy Valley Records, Cloud Castle Lake are surely one’s to watch for 2015. Stream it below.

Pink Floyd share artwork to new album

Pink_Floyd_The_Endless_River

Following July’s announcement of The Endless River, Pink Floyds upcoming new album and their first in over 20 years, the band have shared the album’s artwork online and in various locations across the world.

Large images of the sleeve art were displayed in numerous capital cities including, London, Paris, Milan, Berlin, Los Angeles and New York to mark the upcoming release.

The artwork itself, pictured above, was created by 18-year old Egyptian artist Ahmed Emad Eldin. An honorable feat, as The Endless River is just the second album from Pink Floyd that does not feature artwork by the late Storm Thorgerson, the extradonaire responsible for every ‘Floyd album cover besides their 1967 debut, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

Constructed from over 20 hours of sessions recorded shortly after the release of 1994’s The Divison Bell, by David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright, the album is said to be mainly instrumental, and features 18 tracks. The main force behind the project comes from Gilmour and Mason, revisiting and re-working the 20 year old sessions for release as a tribute to Richard. Head to Pink Floyds website to hear a clip of the album’s first track ‘It’s What We Do’.

The Endless River is due for release November 10th.
