Slayer’s Kerry King slams Mayhem Festival

Slayer-2013_hi

Despite the thrash titans headline slot at the heavy metal festival, Kerry King is holding back no punches when it comes to ‘critiquing’ the event.

King blames the “shitty bill” and not enough thought having gone into reinventing the festival for Mayhem’s falling ticket sales and loss of two stages. He states “whoever booked this made a gigantic error”.

Whereas King blames the events organisers, they have responded to the backlash by turning the blame around onto the bands themselves – “The bands at the top all demand a certain level of fee to be on tour. Unlike punk rock, metal never knows how to take a step back to move the whole scene forward. That’s how punk rock was. That’s how we nurtured punk rock. Bad Religion would take a little less than they could on their own to bring the whole scene forward, so we could make sure we had a good (touring) package around them. Metal doesn’t seem to have that concern, never has since I was working in the clubs in the 80s. It’s always about a me, me, me thing”.

Unseen Tom Penny footage – the last French Fred tapes

tom_pennyMourn the apparent last of the French Fred tapes with none other than the British wizard of all things skateboarding, Tom Penny. I don’t know whether to first discuss the sadness that Fred Mortagne’s incredible archive of tapes from such an important period of skateboarding has come to an end, or the fact that unseen Penny footage is beyond gold.

The only way of leading out of this is to doff your hat to French Fred as his dedication to filming and photographing skateboarding his entire life is commendable. Thanks for everything.

Find more of Fred’s incredible work explained in our feature with him.

Sweat Lodge
‘Bed Of Ashes’
Ripple Music

This Texan four-piece come armed with riffs heavier than railway sleepers, pummelling your ears with the kind of searing-hot sonics that summon images of the blistering heat-haze of the American South and the blast furnace’s of Birmingham in equal measure.

Flowing in a familiar toxic vein to that of the heavy metal giants that came before them, ‘Bed of Ashes’ see’s Sweat Lodge living up to their name with some sincerely psychedeli-sized metal doom. Austin Texas is approximately 4816 miles from Birmingham, West Midlands, but the moment you hit play on Sweat Lodge’s filthy, riff infested garage-dirge below you’ll be wrapped up in a delcious geographical nightmare that just keeps on giving.

Sweat Lodge’s debut album Talismana will be released August 7th via Ripple Music.

Billy Corgan ripped by the US Press

billy_corgan_rollercoaster

Can a 90s alt-rock icon not enjoy a day out at Disneyland in peace these days? No! As last week, poor old Billy Corgan was snapped by paparazzi riding a roller-coaster and the internet has gone bananas about it. Shameless celebrity snapping aside, the US Weekly came up with the best (worst?) tagline you could ever imagine.

“From a rat in a cage to the House of Mouse! Smashing Pumpkins rocker Billy Corgan took his Mellon Collie self to the Happiest Place on Earth, aka Disneyland, where he traveled back in time to the Wild, Wild West of the 19th century.”
