Narwhal

The Guild of Taxidermists

www.myspace.com/voyageofthenarwhal

Narwhals are found northwards from Ashford through much of London. The population found here are most abundant. However, the Narwhal is rare in Siberia and Alaska. The Narwhal is one of many hardcore/screamo species. The species features ex members of Soon the Darkness, After Every Tempest and Sea of Shit. It resembles City of Caterpillar, Breakwater and other early ‘Ebullition’ style bands in appearance and is considered a relative of this mammal.

The Narwhal is a social animal. It is known to live in small groups of 5 individuals. Sometimes, males gather in a pod of bachelors. During the migratory season, Narwhals tend to lead other groups, which results in hundreds and thousands of species going in one direction

Narwhals make use of pulsed calls. They are also known to whistle, yet it is rare. It is believed that individuals may have specific calls. They produce these sounds to communicate with their group members. The sounds can be pulse and tonal. Pulse sounds can be as high as 20-40 kHz. Tonal sounds made by Narwhals tend to be about 0.3-18 kHz. Field recordings of these communications have been posted above but are of fairly poor quality due to squally conditions at sea and the reclusive nature of these creatures around humans.

Solarise

I Quit

www.solarise.info

In 2001 Belgian singer songwriter, J.P.Risse moved to Scotland. The placement of an advert in a Glasgow music store led to him meeting Rodger Hughes. Inspired by their love of music they started writing songs together. They approached Gary McMillan and Daniel McGuire and formed Solarise. In 2003 the band released their debut EP, “Songs for the Devil.” It immediately caught the attention of the Scottish media, inspiring one radio presenter to proclaim Solarise as “One of the most exciting & innovative bands of the year!”

They soon attained much international interest through increasing airplay throughout Europe, and were soon approached to perform at a range of festivals. Performing extensively throughout most of 2004, Solarise quickly earned themselves a reputation as one of the most interesting and exciting live bands in Scotland, combining their eclectic blend of music with stunning visual images, produced by artist Tom Elliot

In autumn 2004, the band started recording their debut album, “Still The Same Dream”. Album preview tracks impressed BBC Radio 1’s Jo Whiley so much she included the band in a weeklong ‘Best of new British’ feature on her show. The Album was recorded in Scotland and mixed by Producer, Rudy Coclet in Belgium. In spring 2006 Solarise will be playing a series of dates throughout the UK to coincide with release of the album. Solarise are currently looking for a manager to take their band forward and during this search they are hard at work on their follow up album.

DrugdealerCheerleader

“Fireworks”

www.drugdealercheerleader.co.uk

Bored with the latest wave of soul-destroying guitar music, DrugdealerCheerleader is a rock’n’roll band, pure and simple. There’s no doubt about it the music that the band are playing isn’t the most appealing to the so called trend-setters in their ivory towers – but by god it’s filled with fuel-injected passion. DrugdealerCheerleader don’t care about what the trendy set perceive as cliché. They wear make-up, say “motherfucker”, have loud distorted guitars, pogo on stage and simply rock with no thought for those that don’t want to roll with them. Marrying melody and energy DrugdealerCheerleader’s songs are filled with ocean-wide hooks and a devil may care attitude. All that’s left to say is go and dust off the rock’n’roll attitude put it back on and watch out for the next generation…

“Fuck ’em if they can’t deal with it” – DrugdealerCheerleader front man Hilda on being told to calm his act down….

Hey Gravity

“Part Time Punk”

www.myspace.com/heygravity

Hey Gravity are a two girl/three boy rock and roll song machine out of London. HG is also the new project fronted by singer/chanteuse Justine Berry, who has been described as that rare find in the musical landscape of 2006; a girl singer that can actually rock, drawing comparisons with Chrissie Hynde, Debbie Harry, PJ Harvey, Peaches and other girls with attitude.

Justine also recently collaborated and brought some rock and roll fire to two tracks on the 2005 album from breakbeat duo Atomic hooligan ‘You Are Here’, which was voted Best Album Of 2005 in the Breakspoll Awards and one of the top albums of the year in magazines including DJ Magazine. Hey Gravity sees Justine, along with new campadre/guitarist Anna on guitar, Andy, Paul and Stuart, moving forward, with a bunch of great new songs recorded, including ‘Part Time Punk’ (available from their site for free download), ‘Risen (she said)’ and ‘Inside Out’- already getting feet moving and tongues wagging.

Keiko

“Twax”

www.myspace.com/keiko

Let’s be honest. There’re too many bands in this world that sound exactly like some other band – and that band probably wasn’t so hot to start with. In the last few years we’ve witnessed the rise of identikit emo and sexless metal – an endless, soul-crushing repetition choking the once mighty fire of rock ‘n roll. Goddamnit, doesn’t anyone want something new?

Keiko are a band that do, and anyone who’s seen or heard them would certainly agree that they provide it in spades. This is a band for whom comparisons are not easily made – or if they are, they’re usually rendered obsolete by the next chorus. Keiko are frenetic, aggressive and unpredictable, but Keiko are also accessible, melodic and – whisper it – catchy.

They’d hesitate to call themselves ‘punk’ because of the connotations of Neanderthal stubbornness it now entails. Keiko’s music explores odd time signatures, jazz harmonics and some migraine-inducing structures. On the other hand, they’re not mad on the word ‘prog’ because it makes them sound pretentious and bloated. Keiko’s music is lean, vital and brimming over with energy.

Keiko win the vote!

The winners of the Relentless Rockit Launcher competition are…..Keiko!

Public votes decided that this 3 piece rock machine edged their way to number 1 with Not Your Hero and The Direction behind them in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Votes:

Keiko – 11,536
Not Your Hero – 10,294
Direction – 8,310

Keiko will support Hull’s most famous indie punk starlets The Paddingtons and play this exclusive invite only party tomorrow night on a boat on the Thames in London in front of a star studded crowd.

Sean Uprichard the head man at Relentless has been quoted on the action over the last week:

“A lot of bands, stacks of talent, and an endless stream of killer tracks. At the end of the day though ‘there can be only one’ and that one has just gotta be Keiko. Love the powerful vocals, the punk rock attitude and the mindblowing energy. Pure Relentless”.

Crossfire’s Head Janitor DJ Zac Slack mentioned:

“Keiko were my personal faves throughout the competition but i must admit i really thought that the trampy punk rock from The Weather Underground should have had more votes as i really liked their trashy style and their execution of gnarly guitar solos”.

DJ Eddy Temple Morris reflects below on his top 5 from the 12 bands entered:

Keiko:
Hundred Reasons meets Green Day with a dash of A. They sound confident beyond their years, very promising.

Not Your Hero:
Really tight skate punk, with a snare drum from the Deftones…I can see moshpits heaving to this.

Hey Gravity:
I like this a lot, I know Justine their singer from her work with Atomic Hooligan, she played at my Remix Night with them and I’ve seen how much this gal rocks.

Kunk:
This is a rocking track that shoots straight for the hips.

DrugDealerCheerLeader
Slick, glam, metallic, sackfuls of energy and a real sense of rock ‘n’ roll. the singer reminds me a bit of Paul Draper from Mansun. No bad thing.

So well done to Keiko who will be playing on the boat tomorrow night, if you have won a ticket from our competition on this site, you would have an email from us by now and we will see you there.

Thanks to all the bands that took part in this Rockit Launcher comp, we were flooded with links from over 250 bands in the space of a week, may your rockits launch all over the UK scene….

Is the pen mightier than the sword..?

A war is raging….

Instead of it being your modern day “Hearts and Minds” battle, this war is between Faith and Freedom. Two utopian ideologies that can flare a jovial jibe into an all out fist fight. In the Blue Corner we have the Journalists, whilst in the Red Corner we have the Muslim Faith. Neither contender can see eye to eye over the current scandal that might result in another split of the global social structure.

Whose side are you on?

Tough question, eh? Well, let me lay the facts on the table and then I’ll pass you the dice to figure your next move… The whole dilemma started when on the 30th September 2005 caricatures of the prophet Mahomet were published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. It’s problematic because the Muslim faith prohibits representations of its prophet and the caricatures pictured him as a terrorist. Several ambassadors from the Muslim world then requested a meeting with the Danish Prime minister who declined.

It then spread to the whole Islamic world when in January several countries, lead by Libya, threatened to close their embassies in Denmark. Then, several newspapers from around Europe (including Liberation and Charlie Hebdo in France) published the caricatures claiming the freedom of the press and freedom of expression. This is when it exploded and Danish and other embassies were attacked and burned down in Iran, Lebanon, and Syria.

Needless to say, the tension between the West and the Middle East is high.

I think that what a lot of people are missing in this double edged sword story, is the fact that the pictures appeared way back in September, yet the main media coverage only appeared in January. Why the delay? Didn’t anyone see the smoke on the horizon?? After all, where there’s smoke, there’s sure to be fire.

Now is not the time to argue! The United Nations Security Council is currently in negotiations with Iran investigating its nuclear capacities, and Denmark is up next for Presidency of the Council in June. A slight disagreement there and the world could be staring at another Bay of Pigs stand off.

The fat is in the fire and some of us don’t eat bacon.

I used to admire skateboarding and music as areas without boundries. Any one can play an instrument and anyone can ride a board. But, when I hear about the classroom bickering of magazine editors and advertisers over jokes about sexuality, it makes no sense.

We preach freedom everyday like we pledge allegiance to our culture. A misplaced joke can sow the seed of separation. Someone said there’s an element of truth in every joke, but I guess it all depends on who’s telling it….

Smoke on the Water!

“Dun, dun, dun…”
Maxwell Woodger Esq.
Monday, 23rd January 2006

Walking home from an uneventful evening, I stumbled across a sprawling mass of naked bodies humping and jumping to the chords of Deep Purple.

Ummm..?

I stopped and stood in the shadows to watch and make sure this wasn’t some sort of trap or mystical sacrifice. The heaving crowd was working itself into a trance as the Ritchie Blackmore doppelganger went to work on the very obvious melody of Smoke on the Water. A greasy man rubbed his naked belly fat against the sagging breasts of an aged groupie from yesteryear. It was a sick and depraved sight, but I decided to join in.

The reason why Deep Purple wrote the lyrics for Smoke on the Water was due to an event that took place in Switzerland: The band was on their way to record a record at the famous Montreux Casino studios, but as they grew near thick plumes of smoke wafted towards them from across the lake. Apparently Frank Zappa was performing at the Casino and had literally burnt the house down!

So what has this musical introduction got to do with the world today, eh?

Well, elsewhere there is a thick cloud of chemical smoke coating the water of foreign docks and bays. A mix of burnt tyres, tear gas and petrol bombs creates a fog that creeps towards the shores of safe citizens and weary diplomats. Needless to say, the Dockers are pissed. Problems began when the European Parliament introduced a new directive that would open up the continents maritime routes to more competition from abroad. An influx of interest and economic force from abroad would squash what remains of an already unstable business sector.

A man of my stature cannot condone violence, but these burly men of quayside will easily take up arms faster than a sliding butterfly knot (Yes- I know my lingo!) comes undone. You see, years of salty sea air, late night drinking bouts of rare rum and an unhealthy intake of Fisherman’s Friend can take it’s toll on the a person’s character.

The fabric of the Docker’s sociability is frayed, lest torn!

So, what now???

Hell those childish brutes need to get a quick lesson in world politics 101, that’s what! The era of Pugwash and Captain blue beard are gone. Jimmy Hoffa is dead, and the rumours of pederasty didn’t help the man either. No- Today you need to fight fire with fire. Hallelujah! Take on the sharp politicos with their own game: Diplomatic immunity, coffee breaks with Madame Tseng in Paris, and chauffeur driven saloons for all!

Ahh… The political elite might find that a hard pill to swallow.

But essentially there isn’t much you could do. The world is a social place with hierarchy and politics. Just play your role and the cogs can keep turning, right?

The group of frenzied funksters that I was rubbing shoulders with, as a pseudo- Deep Purple band played the anthems, were just a bunch of hair dressers. Nothing to do with loading bay heavies or criminally minded seamen… Just a gang of follicule flamers having fun on a Friday night. Incidentally the sounds of an ode to a burnt casino rolled over us and across the road into the river.

The sounds being carried away by a strong tide towards rougher seas. Perhaps a docker had heard the cries of my blubbery and misty eyed bretheren, and mistaken them for a call to arms- the rum and Fishermen’s Friend are a bad cocktail…

Wherever you are in this bitter world- You MUST fight for the right to party!

Thanks to Jose Lavezzi at www.bazarts.org for the use of the dick shot!
