Crossfire Buzzbombs: 10 featured tracks for February

Big Ups – Goes Black

Let’s kick this off with something new that pays homage to the good old days of 80s hardcore and gets away with it. With brash stompers like ‘Goes Black’, Brooklyn punks Big Ups can shout all they goddam want. We will be listening. They sit somewhere between Career Suicide, Regulations and Fugazi. UK live dates this week.- Zac

Vertical Scratchers – Memory Shards

Another new track from what could well be the album of the year dropped last week. Vertical Scratchers is one part John Schmersal (Enon/Brainiac) another part Christian Beaulieu (Triclops!/Anywhere) and is catchier than the Beatles and the Beach Boys together. The full album stream is here. Do it. – Zac

Habits – ‘Splendor of the Panic’

Habits is the brainchild of electronic visionary Dustin M. Krapes, pro wrestler Dithy Ramb and taxidermist Gabriel Armenta. Together this trio of freaks create a huge, synthesized fuss. Brought to you from the stellar Fleeting Youth Records,’Splendor of the panic’ is a collage of fuzzy, psychedelic grooves. Get into it. – Dave Palmer

Tideland – ‘Carved In Mine’

We all like a spot of shoegazing from time to time don’t we! Especially when it’s mixed with some post-hardcore snarl and splattered with sincerely rocking riffs. Taken from their 2013 album Lull,’Carved In Mine’ will have you hooked on Tideland in an instant. If you get a buzz surfing waves of distortion and crave a soaking of delicious guitar hooks then this is the band for you. – Dave Palmer

Thee Oh Sees – ‘Penetrating Eye’

Despite announcing that they’re going on a hiatus in December ’13, Thee Oh Sees clearly couldn’t fight the urge to create some more fuzzed up slabs of space rock, having just unveiled the crushing ‘Penetrating Eye’. New album ‘Drop’ gets a release in April.- Joe Parry

Future Death – ‘Basements’

By replacing some of the aggression in Perfect Pussy with a Fang Island-esque sense of playfulness, Austin’s Future Death have created a track that is as sugary sweet as it is disorientating. At just 2.20, you’ll be pressing play over and over to get your fix. – Joe Parry

The So So Glos – ‘Lost Weekend’

This band tore down the walls of the Sebright Arms and the Garage this week with their fun filled sing-a-long tunes and sneer-laden punk swagger. ‘Lost Weekend’ was the highlight and had the room shaking. – Zac

Pussy Riot – ‘Putin Will Teach You How To Love’

Famous for everything but their music, on this track Pussy Riot finally hit out with some seething punk rock rage that belts as hard musically as it does politically. We know they’re not a ‘band’, we know music is not the main objective, but it’s great to hear this anger set to some high-energy noise. There’s nothing out there more punk than this. These girls have serious guts. Anyone who saw the shocking footage of Pussy Riot being attacked outside the Sochi Olympics (footage of which is featured in this video) will know just how much of a threat they are considered to be by the Russian authorities. And when was the last time you could say that punk was an actual threat? – James Sherry

Psychedelic Black – ‘Melting’

‘Melting’ is the first outing by an artist called Logan Hyde from Boise, Idaho. It’s rare that a song is so perfectly titled; ‘Melting’ positively drips with lysergic, squelching psychedelic pop that is utterly morish and highly addictive. This is all there is for now but if ‘Melting’ is anything to go by, there’s going to be huge potential in Psychedelic Black’s future work. The Flaming Lips better watch their backs. – James Sherry

Fat White Family – Touch The Leather (Redux)

This will go down as one of the most classic videos of 2014 without a doubt. But aside from Roger Sargent’s incredible direction, musically Fat White Family have been a joy to listen to so far with their dose of seedy psych and thought provoking garage steez. – Zac

Clouder

Clouder_Phantom_Girl‘Phantom Girl’
Clouder
Fleeting Youth Records

Heralded as “Brooklyn’s Bad Boys” after an intense tour of their 2012 LP Freakin’ Out The Squares, Clouder are back with more psych fuelled garage rock vibes. ‘Phantom Girl’ is the second instalment from the Brooklyn five-piece’s upcoming sophomore album Sister Raygun.

This track is three and a half minutes of hit repeat goodness. Lead singer Eric Gilstrap’s commanding baritone will chill you to the bone. This spooked vocal coupled with riotous psych via surf guitar riffing and a super tight rhythm section leaves ‘Phantom Girl’ dripping with 60’s rock ‘n roll authenticity. This track sounds far from dated, though. There’s no need for washed out soundscapes or indulgent episodes, Clouder keep it up tempo and exciting from start to finish.

If ‘Lost in Reverie’ and ‘Phantom Girl’ are anything to go by then Sister Raygun looks to be a strong contender for one of the hottest albums this year so far. It drops March 4th via Fleeting Youth Records.

Devo’s Bob Casale RIP

bob_casale_devo

On Monday night the legendary ‘Bob 2’ aka Bob Casale from Devo passed away and left his legacy as one of the greats within the music scene. The guitarist died of heart failure at his home and is the second Devo member to leave us in the last year following the death of former drummer Alan Myers last June.

“As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning. He was my level-headed brother, a solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got. He was excited about the possibility of Mark Mothersbaugh allowing Devo to play shows again. His sudden death from conditions that lead to heart failure came as a total shock to us all. – Gerald Casale, Devo founder

For us, Devo is everything. If you look around the Crossfire office here you will see a huge amount of Devo fan stuff. It’s a sound that defines nothing but Devo. It’s unique and timeless. Bob Casale was unique. His input into this band was unique. Our thoughts go out to friends and family and all of the Devo fans around the world mourning a great.

Many pro skateboarders who grew up skating to Devo in the 80s have been been leaving their marks of respect overnight. Tony Hawk and Lance Mountain are huge fans and insta’d their tributes whilst others continue to pour in.

Bob Casale RIP

Teenage Time Killer with Grohl, Biafra, Mullin & Taylor

teenage_time_killer

Hardcore supergroup’s can be this year’s thing all day long so long as it is legit. But when it comes to Nirvana’s free flowing powerhouse drummer Dave Grohl, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, Reed Mullin, drummer with Corrosion Of Conformity and Dead Kennedy’s Jello Biafra, Teenage Time Killer sounds like it’s going to be lethal.

Not only that but this project will also have the likes of Nick Oliveri (Queens Of The Stone Age/Kyuss), Neil Fallon (Clutch), Keith Morris (OFF!/Black Flag), Max Cavalera (Sepultura/Soulfy) Lee Ving (Fear) and members of The Misfits, Municipal Waste, Red Fang, Goatsnake, Brujeria, My Ruin, Prong, Articles Of Faith and SUNN O)))and others involved. Pray for Ian Mackaye, Rollins and Lemmy too.

The name of the project is lifted from the UK crust-punk outfit Rudimentary Peni. (whose Death Church album you should download today) Await more news on this as it sounds fucking ace.

Spring King unveil new video for ‘Mumma/Mumma pt. II’

Spring_King_MummaManchester garage pop mob Spring King have just dropped a new video for their debut double A side single ‘Mumma/Mumma pt. II’. This clip is pretty unique, fusing two different music videos from two different directors into one freaky visual.

‘Mumma’, part one of this visual, is a piano bashing, catchy as they come, garage pop ditty. Leading line “She got it from her Mumma” makes for a sing-a-long chorus that soars, with the underlying narrative of this track about a girl struggling with addiction.

The video was directed by Patryk Bychowski after hitting it off at a chance meeting with the band at a car park party in Poland. After much bonding over a mutual love of Ariel Pink and vodka, the band entrusted Bychowski with full creative control for this visual resulting in something quite bizarre. Watch this sorry animated sole get repeatedly sucked in by a personified pair of jeans.

This collaborative flick turns a corner both sonically and visually for ‘Mumma pt. II’, directed by Jodie Canwell. Tarek Musa and his gang take a slow drive through the suburbs to this eery reprise. An agreeable contrast to the upbeat pop sensibilities of part one, these dark jazz tones will hit you deep down.

Catch Spring King live over the coming weeks at these dates:

11th February – The Social, London
5th March – Sebright Arms, London
6th March – Soup Kitchen, Manchester

Read our take on the cracking debut album In All This Muck and Dirt here.

‘Mumma’ will be available from March 3rd on ParadYse/Transgressive Records.
