Lewis Marnell RIP

lewismarnellrip This weekend has left most skateboarders in shock following the news of Lewis Marnell leaving us. He was one of the nicest skateboarders you will ever meet and cut his trade on a deck with much grace and style.

Riding for Almost Skateboards, Lewis made a lot of friends due to his incredible character and will be sorely missed by many. Skateboarding has lost one of the best. Our thoughts go out to all of his family and friends worldwide.

He came by the Crossfire office unplanned to say hello back in 2008 whilst on a tour. You can read his words here.

Lewis Marnell RIP.

Skateboarding will obviously be affected this week due to the snow that is falling out there right now across the country. Some of you, no doubt, will take the initiative to film or take pics out there having a laugh in the white stuff, so please host your pics and footage send them in and we will share the best ones. Our favourite entry will receive a nice warm Plan B hoodie in the post to combat the cold too.

Don’t forget that we are also running our annual winter skateboard edit comp right now, so it’s a good time to get footage together. Details about deadlines and entry can be found here.

Skateboarding Venom Injecting Superman

As best friends go, one of mine, Steve Ludwin is not your average mate you go down the pub with, discuss the latest TV show and say goodnight. Over the 18 years we have known each other, I have seen some of the most bizarre things with reptiles I will ever see in London. Waking up on his sofa to feel one of the most poisonous snakes in the world licking your nose was just one of them. All just for the crack, of course.

Steve features in a recently filmed documentary for VICE this week and explains how injecting venom enhances his skateboarding, his personal studies in his quest to help find a cure for cancer through snake venom and much more.

Soletech unleash ecological European facility

The ever impressive Sole Technology group behind the Etnies, Emerica and Altamont skateboard shoe and clothing brands have announced this week that they have opened a new ecological European office. The environmentally friendly building based in the Houthavens district of Amsterdam, Holland is said to host 60 solar panels that once hit full capacity, share excess energy to households in Amsterdam and a state-of-the-art geothermal heating and cooling system that accounts for a 40% reduction in energy consumption compared to a conventional system.

This is not the first time that the skateboarding co-founder and owner Pierre-Andre Senizergues have reduced their carbon footprint to actively bring us quality skateboarding goods from a sustainable source. Speaking about the subject in the past, Pierre has been quoted to say: “My goal is to leave the right footprint with Sole Technology. We’ve become a leader through the intelligence and hard work of our team of people. We strive for innovation and excellence in all we do. Together, we keep growing the right way in a healthy organic process.”

Long may it continue and long may skater-owned brands challenge the unethical ways of the corperations that are pushing their way into skateboarding. Read more about Pierre and his hard work for skateboarding from our interview back in 2006.
