Husker Du to reform?

huskerduflowers

Legendary Minnesotans Husker Du have recently launched the first official website in their now defunct collaborative career, or is it?

Currently serving as a new online store-front where fans can purchase some rather tasty looking tee’s, this launch comes at a time when bassist Greg Norton has recently revealed to Minnesota’s Star Tribune that he, Mould and Hart are in ongoing communications with each-other for the first time in decades. They’ve worked out a licensing agreement for their music, and an official Facebook page is rumoured to be follow soon. Could this be the small beginnings of one of the most anticipated reunions in punk rock since 1987?

Capra Informis

‘Womb Of The Wild’
Rocket Recordings

What better way to shake the Monday cobwebs than with news that the djembe player from Swedish psych revolutionaries GOAT has started a side project?

While there’s no denying the solid parallels between this ‘bit on the side’ and their protagonist’s main venture, Capra Informis cast a far darker shadow over their mystic counterparts. A percussive thunderstorm of tribal, primitive beats and lead guitar lines raining down conjure a perpetual sense of foreboding. Sounding like a pagan ritual gone mad – ‘Womb Of The Wild’ comes cloaked, hooded and with sacrificial blood spilled all over the shop.

Womb of the Wild will be released on October 23rd 2015 via Rocket Recordings. Pre-order the ltd edition vinyl EP here.

Wand

‘1000 Days’
Drag City

It seems only moments ago that Wand first graced our ears with their fine sonic wares. April release Golem offered a marvellous display of velcro fuzz walls and crazed keyboard tones that would have had even DikMik quaking in his psychedelic boots. So it’s with much delight we find the band have teamed with Drag City, and are set to drop another brand new record this September 25th titled 1000 Days that you can stream below.

Lead tune ‘Dungeon Dropper’ wastes no time, steaming into the room on the sleaziest groove going. Though these new riffs seem to perch precariously on a sharp psychedelic switchblade – If King Buzzo was snarling atop these licks it’d be a total different story, and one coated in sludge. But with leading man Corey Hanson’s acid tinged harmonies fighting to the fore, this two minute stomper creeps into early Tame Impala and Pond territories, waving the sparkly freak flag sky high for all to see.

The album has a tendency to go from upbeat pop grooves to 60’s flower psych, to the most crunching riffs and psychedelic jams heard on record this year. It’s a phenomenal record that sees the band step into a new dimension that seems to fit like a glove.

Hit play below and order a physical copy of 1000 Days Our new interview with frontman Cory Hanson explains exactly what went into the making of it.

September Tour
6th End Of The Road Festival, Larmer Tree Gardens
7th The Exchange, Bristol
8th The Green Door Store, Brighton
9th Electrowerkz, London
10th Soup Kitchen, Manchester
11th Broadcast , Glasgow
12th The Rainbow Warehouse, Birmingham

South Coast Psych Bands You Should Know

southcooastpsych_article

Though it’s not entirely convincing that the English Channel has had any direct mystic effect upon fledgling psych and garage bands from Britain’s South Coast, there’s definitely a scene on the fringe beyond London who are crafting raucous garage rock and psych gems. From the buzz of Brighton to the tamer waters of Southampton and Portsmouth spans a collective of musicians who, despite looking back in retrospect, have one foot forward. From bands drawing influence from the gritty sound of US Garage to those taking upon the UK Beat sound, Britain’s seaside towns have spawned a vast and varied array of new acts. Immerse yourself in everything from relentless noise rock to gentle psych pop and dive into the coasts burgeoning new talents below.

Dead Rabbits – Southampton (Fuzz Club)

Ethereal and spacious sounding, Dead Rabbits air hypnotic transmissions. With a sound like Spacemen 3 strung out on Valium, it’s hard to resist the levitation inducing sounds of the Southampton five piece.

Strange Cages – Brighton (Strong Island Recordings)

With a sound that wouldn’t be out of place in the backroom of a dive bar somewhere off the beaten track, Strange Cages’ desert-psych toys with an American sensibility. Wavering Sky Saxon vocals and sultry guitar sounds channel the counter-culture rebellion and attitude of 60s garage rock.

Tusks – Brighton (S/R)

Brighton’s Tusks masterfully amalgamate driving 90s riffs with the lucidity of Tame Impala-esque melodies. Packed with punch, the trio’s lo fi psychedelia is high soaring and hard hitting.

Wax Machine – Brighton (S/R)

With the pained crooning of a Vegas ballroom singer, Brighton’s Wax Machine invoke the feel of innocent 60s pop that ruminates on lethargic sunny days. Think Scott Walker covering The Byrds through a wah pedal.

Gang – Brighton (Strong Island Recordings)

Brighton’s doomy trio, Gang, create unholy and brooding psych-tinged noise. Roof rattling bass lines and spacey vocal interplay sets you up for a bumpy ride into the darker backwaters of sound.

Spit Shake Sisters – Brighton (S/R)

Fuzzed-to-fuck noise accompanied by tortured vocals; Spit Shake Sisters know just how to deliver vulgar garage rock. Peppered with blasphemy and attitude, the Sisters are spreading ‘warm fuzzy love’ across the South East.

Tigercub – Brighton (Too Pure Singles Club)

Fierce by name and even fiercer by nature, Tigercub provide unholy garage sounds in hard hitting doses. Homme-esque vocals and chugging bass lines are prerequisite to the trio’s thunderous sound.

Melt Dunes – Southampton (Strong Island Recordings)

Southampton’s Melt Dunes’ raucous racket is a violent sensory attack. Brutal aural experimentation has spawned what is the bastardised sound of whirring psychedelia and gutsy garage noise.

Rickyfitts – Portsmouth (S/R)

Hefty garage riffs are the focal point to Rickyfitts‘ grunge stained sound. Heavily influenced by the doomier branch of psychedelia, the Portsmouth duo’s tracks are the sound of being kicked in the teeth.

BullyBones – Ryde (S/R)

Abiding to a more atypical Rock N Roll sound aesthetic, BullyBones have an all-encompassing sound of 60s Britain. With tracks that could be firmly placed on a Freakbeat compilation, the quartet’s retrospective angle nurtures a ballsy and relentless sound.

Is Bliss – Portsmouth (S/R)

Is Bliss’ hazy textures are moulded into opiate delights. The Portsmouth based shoegazers create luscious soundscapes that consist of celestial synths and reverberated vocals that weave in out of their dreamy tapestry.

Hey Colossus

‘Hop The Railings’
Rocket Recordings

These six sonic warriors only released their last record in February this year but prolificacy has prevailed with the announcement of Radio Static High, Hey Colossus’ 10th album release, due via Rocket Recordings this October 2nd.

Continually evolving and mutating onwards from their caustic early releases, guitarist Jonathan Richards explains, “after 12 years functioning in a Noiserock/Doom/Kraut/whatever scene of sorts, and being aware of unwanted repetition, we feel it is more subversive for us to compose songs with rigid song structures than it is to absentmindedly clang off another riff-athon.”

The album’s first cut ‘Hop The Railings’ confirms this proposed swerve of direction, laying down a mesmeric, rigorous and driving groove that never once falters through its cosmic six-minute lap. Hear it below and be sure to catch them live in London on October 9th.

Tour Dates
September
5th – The Audacious Art Experiment, Sheffield
11th – Double Dot Bash, Reading
26th – Liverpool Psych Festival, Liverpool

9th – Electrowerkz, London (album launch party)
10th – Chameleon Arts Café, Nottingham

Kurt Cobain is releasing a solo album?

kurt_cobain_nirvana_montage_of_heck

Yes. The Nirvana front-man and song-writing genius’ death is set to be further capitalised upon this coming November 6th, when the Montage of Heck DVD will be released with an accompanying ‘solo album’ comprised of MORE previously unheard solo material recorded by Cobain some 20+ years ago.

Montage of Heck director Brett Morgen is said to have found the recordings that will make up this album when sifting through the extensive Cobain archives for home demos. Commenting on the album in a recent interview with Bedford & Bowery, Morgen said listeners “will feel like you’re kind of hanging out with Kurt Cobain on a hot summer day in Olympia, Washington as he fiddles about,” adding that “it’s not a Nirvana album, it’s just Kurt, and you’re going to hear him do things you never expected to come out of him.”

As yet untitled, this ‘solo LP’ is due November 6th. Look out for further announcements online and head here for more Cobain controversy, courtesy of Buzz from the Melvins.

Slayer’s Kerry King slams Mayhem Festival

Slayer-2013_hi

Despite the thrash titans headline slot at the heavy metal festival, Kerry King is holding back no punches when it comes to ‘critiquing’ the event.

King blames the “shitty bill” and not enough thought having gone into reinventing the festival for Mayhem’s falling ticket sales and loss of two stages. He states “whoever booked this made a gigantic error”.

Whereas King blames the events organisers, they have responded to the backlash by turning the blame around onto the bands themselves – “The bands at the top all demand a certain level of fee to be on tour. Unlike punk rock, metal never knows how to take a step back to move the whole scene forward. That’s how punk rock was. That’s how we nurtured punk rock. Bad Religion would take a little less than they could on their own to bring the whole scene forward, so we could make sure we had a good (touring) package around them. Metal doesn’t seem to have that concern, never has since I was working in the clubs in the 80s. It’s always about a me, me, me thing”.

Sweat Lodge
‘Bed Of Ashes’
Ripple Music

This Texan four-piece come armed with riffs heavier than railway sleepers, pummelling your ears with the kind of searing-hot sonics that summon images of the blistering heat-haze of the American South and the blast furnace’s of Birmingham in equal measure.

Flowing in a familiar toxic vein to that of the heavy metal giants that came before them, ‘Bed of Ashes’ see’s Sweat Lodge living up to their name with some sincerely psychedeli-sized metal doom. Austin Texas is approximately 4816 miles from Birmingham, West Midlands, but the moment you hit play on Sweat Lodge’s filthy, riff infested garage-dirge below you’ll be wrapped up in a delcious geographical nightmare that just keeps on giving.

Sweat Lodge’s debut album Talismana will be released August 7th via Ripple Music.
