Taking some time out to travel to America is great anyway, but when I do it and get to go to the best underground hip hop festival in the world, it makes it that much better. Words might not be able to do it justice but check out a selection of photos taken from my time there and think about jetting out there for the event in 2007 – you won’t be disappointed!

Left: One of the reasons I was so looking forward to the event was the appearance of the Juggaknots, they didn’t disappoint. Right: Pigeon John rounded the Friday off with some typically fun styled hip hop. Digging that hat!

On the way I picked up about 20 free CDs, 4 free t-shirts, had conversations with untold rappers and generally chilled with great people and amazing music. Seeing Brother Ali, Glue, Murs, Pigeon John, Hangar 18, Juggaknots, Jel, Mr Dibbs, Akrobatik, Ernie Rhodes, Luckyiam.PSC, Big Daddy Kane, and some incredible battles all in one place was like walking into paradise. Like MC Hammer says, you can’t touch this!

Brooklyn’s Mos Def will bring out his new album, Tru3 Magic, on September 25th. The album will feature production from Kanye West, Pharrell and Rich Harrison and will be preceeded by a digitally available EP.

After having proved himself as an actor in The Italian Job and Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy and receiving an Emmy nomination for his role in Something The Lord Made, Mos is back behind the mic for his eagerly awaited comeback as a rapper.

Lupe Fiasco Video Streams

Chicago’s Lupe Fiasco, who broke into the charts with Kick Push, is back with a new single. Daydreamin‘ will feature Jill Scott and is due out on September 4th and will be followed by the album Food And Liquor on September 18th. The album will feature Jill Scott, Kanye West and Mike Shinoda and has Jay Z as an executive producer.

New Icon decks for Smedley and Leech

Dan Leech and Craig Smedley both have brand new decks out on Icon Skateboards this month.

Dan’s model is a 7.75″ and Craig’s is a 7.5″ and both are rocking wheels for the hardy with Leech opting for the smaller 51mm and Smedley rollin on 52mm.

Former NWA rapper Ice Cube is back with a bang as he releases his new album and shows he’s lost none of his style or hard hitting content.

Why We Thugs, the first track to be taken from the album Laugh Now, Cry Later, sees Cube tackling the continued problem of violence on the streets, and sees Bush making the same mistakes as Saddam did when he was in power. When he states that “every hood’s the same, everything’s the same” you know he’s speaking from experience and it’s a sad state of affairs that we’ve not come on from street gangs and larger scale warfare.

Cube also questions why he’s called an animal for smoking some weed and wonders why the person who built the prison he gets thrown into isn’t the animal.
