Emerica – Leo Romero 2

Emerica has never failed to impress me in the past; I have always supported their movement and even though I probably will do for years to come, my honest opinion on these shoes are that they lack the ‘Stay Gold’ touch.

On paper they def look the part, but when I first laced them up, I was a bit skeptical and soon found myself wishing Emerica had sent me a pair of Leo’ 1’s instead. I have to admit, I was a big fan of the predecessor model, it had all the characteristics I normally look for in a shoe, thin suede, good construction, stylish and not too stiff. Leo’s 2nd model is almost the complete opposite to this, the shoe fits like boxes on your feet, has a dull shape and is very stiff. I did manage to skate them for a good few weeks and even though they come with all the standard trimmings you’d expect from Emerica (usual cupsole with STI Foam footbed, System G2 heel cushioning and overall thin construction for board feel), the shoe itself just never really got me excited.

I am quite particular about my skate shoes, maybe it’s just me, but I personally won’t get these again. I’m sure they will appeal to so many other skateboarders though, some will probably say they are the best shoes they’ve ever owned, however, I’d much rather roll with Leo’s previous model, a much better shoe in my books.

Shoot em up with ‘A Day in the Life’ of Leo below, fun times…

Slamming in the basement with Emerica

The latest from the Emerica x Altamont concept store in the basement of Slam City Skates has arrived here in video form. Have a peak of what Slam’s owner Gareth Skewis and some Emerica crew have to say on the hook up that is proving to be quite popular this month in WC2H.

Emerica Harvey plaid hooded shirt

Here’s another Spring clothing option for you to be thinking about if you are looking for some thinner shirts/hoodies to skate in over the next few months as it gets warmer.

Emerica have added a hood to their long sleeve shirts so that if the weather turns you have at least something to keep your head dry. These Harvey shirts come in both Teal and Charcoal colours with buttoned breast pockets and will set you back about £54.

Keep an eye out of them in your local SOS.

Emerica – Up Chuck Hooded Flannel Shirt

To be honest, I’ve always been a big fan of Emerica’s apparel, they are a little bit ahead of the game and definitely one of the first clothing manufacturers to stop making traditional skate rags only!

The Up Chuck hoody is a good example of their innovative ideas, sure, it looks like a normal hooded, flannel shirt made by every other skateboard company out there, but it’s not, it features a thermal lining inside to keep you warm this winter. It’s super lightweight, slim fitting has a really nice and subtle flannel design throughout.

The shirt acts more like a hoody if I’m honest, but wear’s like a shirt. It’s practical and most importantly it’s warm so I guess it’s perfect in every way. Go get one.

Emerica Reynolds Cruisers

In the time I’ve been skating, I’ve gone had a complete revolution in the shoe and deck departments. From skating super skinny decks and moonboot style shoes when I started, it’s taken me until now to get comfortable with as wide a deck as possible and the slimmest shoes I can find.

I always think shoes are the critical choice. If you can’t feel your board through those soles then you have no idea what is going on. Having sung the praises of the Emerica Laced not so long ago, I was really keen to get my flippers into a pair of the Reynolds Cruisers as they looked to follow the same simple construction and design.

The first thing that really surprised me with them was how heavy the sole was. Seriously, the weight on these things shocked me as they look very light, but the vulc sole is a really solid bit of rubber. Quickly though, I realised this was a good thing. What let the Laced down was the sole being almost too thin and the inevitable heel bruises that come with it. The Cruisers have beefed up the sole to give you that confidence that no matter how hard you skate that day, you’ll still be able to walk home. The general construction is solid on these too. One-piece toes on skate shoes get rid of the problem of ripped stitching, there’s nothing to snag or wear away and they’re always more comfortable to wear. The same goes for thin laces too, keep them small and out the way and they will never snap.

Despite the thicker sole, the Cruisers still have great board feel and the small amount of cushioning around the ankle is just enough to fill you with confidence that you’re not going to tweak yourself easily. The suede has been taking a serious punishing from recent skates and there still isn’t a mark on it.

Although it might just be me and my freakish feet, but I found that wearing these a half or even whole size smaller than you would normally wear definitely helps. They have a tendency to flop around your foot if you don’t get a snug fit, and the suede will always stretch out to fit better anyway. Other than that, Reynolds has done it again with a simple, strong shoe that will last for ages.
