Jim Phillips Spreads His Ink

Before the tricks, before the pros and before the endless media, the first thing to impress a kid in a skateshop is the graphics. No single graphic did it for us more than the ‘Screaming Hand’ by fabled artist Jim Phillips.

Skate artists aren’t spared when it comes to trends, so Jim’s talents were brushed off as a new wave of illustrations (or lack of during the awful blank board period) spread across the shelves and Hip-Hop cool bumped the wild times of blood, guts and gore. Oh well…

However, after a good few years, Jim Phillips is back and so are his hair-raising graphics at Pockpistol Skateboards. Pocket Pistol caters for the more roots variety of skater and with Jim’s graphics on-board, you know the goods are good!

Jason Jessee Cruzin’ again

Santa Cruz Skateboards and Jason Jessee have joined forces again as skateboarding’s favourite misfit has signed up with the SCS Veteran Division.

His latest pro model, “The Rape of Liberty” is a winner that reflects Jason’s unorthodox ethos.

Between skating and working on his killer motorbikes, Jason is currently battling it out to get the rights to his auto-biographical movie Pray For Me (www.jasonjesseemovie.com).

New Marseille Bowl

You know everybody loves the Marseille Bowl, well things just got for the French Riviera with this new skatepark/bowl in Apt of the Vaucluse region. Those hard working dudes at Syndrom Skateboards, Skatenova and the USSR Coop just sent news of this spot that they found and transformed for good use.

In a previous life, this spot was an already skateable ditch thing, but now it has coping, ledges and a strange cheese formation that doubles as an interesting wallride/ledge jobby. USSR and Sydrome work together to push the local scene and get things done. Their riders are a good mix of ATV and tech skaters, but then what do you expect when you have parks like this on your doorstep?

Anthrax – Live

London Astoria
10/04/06

“Twenty years, man!”

As his band mates stand triumphantly beside him, it’s these simple words from a beaming Joey Belladonna that allow everyone in attendance to fully appreciate the magnitude of what stands before them. Fronted by former Armoured Saint vocalist John Bush for the better part of the last two decades, tonight signals the return of a line-up that many always considered to be Anthrax’s true form (that’s front man Joey Belladonna, Guitarists Scott Ian and Dan Spitz, Bassist Frank Bello and Drummer Charlie Benante respectively).

It’s an occasion not lost on the some 2000 sardine-packed loyalists that have crammed into the Astoria tonight, because for 80 long minutes this is no more an audience than it is an army. Songs like curtain-raiser ‘Among The Living’, ‘Spreading The Disease’ and the mammoth ‘Indians’ positively explode; the floor and balconies alike a tide of banging heads and pumping fists, each line roared stageward with unrivalled admiration. Onstage the energy is just as electric, the band slamming their way across the boards whilst churning out the groundbreaking hardcore-meets-thrash mayhem that everybody here this evening owes so much to; each flawless groove and pitch perfect scream positively dripping with the type of hair-raising nostalgia that even the younger punters here tonight can’t fail to acknowledge.

The real tragedy isn’t that this particular incarnate ever vanished, but rather the realisation that one day it will once and forever more. If you have an ounce of decency inside of you then this is one disease you simply must help spread, because the world needs a band like Anthrax more than ever in 2006.

Open wide.
