Vallely takes a bow

Mike Vallely has recorded a video collage to celebrate 21 years of skateboarding. Vallely has been there and done the lot and blogged recently that ….’these days I don’t go to the trade shows, I don’t shake hands with the movers and shakers and I no longer follow the culture. The evaluation of others is no longer a guide for me; I am entirely on my own and quite content in my own skin. So when people say I’m over the hill and all that other nonsense all that I can do is laugh. Of course I’m over the hill, I turned pro in 1987 so by industry standards I was over the hill in 1989, that’s just the way it goes‘.

Vallely has just completed filming a new movie called Mall Cop featuring Kevin James and says that ‘I got to do things on my skateboard that no other skateboarder has done to date.’ Whilst we wait for this, you can watch Mike’s latest collage here:

Baghead Flats

31/5/08

Judging by the hype this video produced on the Sidewalk forum, you’d think it was their latest release- but it isn’t. Baghead Flats is in fact an independent project led by the magazine’s editor, Ben Powell and film obsessive Ryan Gray.

The main focus is on the Northern and Yorkshire UK scene with main sections from Doug McLaughlan, Ben Grove, Joe Lynskey, Danny Beall, Josh “Manhead” Young, Jason Brown, Mike Wright, Andy Scott and a host of others. The skating is right up there with the rest of the international talent, and the tunes vary from underground grime MCs to obscure folk, passing by well known acts like Feist.

So, what’s top drawer for Baghead Flats? Well, the featured skaters are all sick in their individual ways. Lynskey gets tech, Grove is a stuntman, Bell is fast footed, Doug loves a bit of rough tranny, as does Manhead and Jason Brown does his own thing. You’d have to watch his part a few times before you realize how un-contemporary he is. The two biggest highlights for me though were Andy Scott and Mike Wright. Andy is a legend and so f’in effortless on a skateboard that his ramp riding cannot, will not and should not get the vert button pressed. Mike on the other hand handles his business on the streets and puts down some amazing tricks that really a pro should be dealing with.

If there is one thing you should take away from this review it’s that Baghead Flats is an independent project (with help from a few sponsors) that pours light on the UK’s new breed of skate rats. The skateboarding is truly awesome, the production and editing is fantastic and it costs under a tenner. Need I say more? Don’t piss about with downloading it off the internet, own a copy and get stoked as this is arguably the best UK scene video to drop in years.

Dyet’s hair was ravenous…

Aaron ‘Jaws’ Homoki got ready for a McTwist on the vert…

and hucked a clean one…

Dyet took the wall one foot…

Gravette was like the pied piper..

Bartie got to the demo that morning straight from the airport….

Sweeney takes Cantelowes Bowlriders

Cantelowes skatepark was rinsed this afternoon as the Quiksilver Bowlriders qualifier came to town for the second year running. Aaron Sweeney took the tickets to the finals in Malmo after turning the Camden park upside down with a selection of lines and tricks that had Bob Sanderson spitting some of the best commentary heard on Southern soil.

Sweeney took speedy lines with bangers on every wall consisting of a massive fs 5-0 hop-in from the wall into the deep, tweaked airs, reverts, gap steez, smiths and ended on a frontside 360 over the gap. Scottish cannonball Benson came in a close second with pocket air blasts, lengthy ollies, blunts, transfers and kickflip indys over the hips, wall and cradle, fresh from flying into Heathrow at 8am from the US. Sick.

Third place went to the Gyppo Army again, represented this time by Kevin McKeon who rolled burly around the park steamrolling the cradle, hip and gap making the final a total pisstake. Look out for footage on Monday but for now watch the trailer below and book your flight to Malmo today.
