OFF! – The Album

off!_albumsleeveVICE RECORDS

Unless you’ve had your head firmly stuck in the sand, or gone feral in a cave in Bora Bora, OFF! cannot have failed to register on your radar. I believe the story goes that a recording session by the Circle Jerks went to the wall and singer Keith Morris subsequently hooked up with producer Dimitri Coats or something like that, but whatever, the partnership drafted in Steven McDonald from Red Kross, powerhouse skin beater Mario Rubalcaba (lotsa bands) and OFF! was born.

We should be truly grateful, because they’ve gotten Keith back hollering like the Hermosa banshee of oh-so-many years ago, recalling the guy who rallied against the fenced-in, white picket dystopia of Southern California in, first Black Flag, and then the aforementioned CJ’s. Lesser men mighta taken the easy way out and just been happy to continually rewind past glories, but what’s got so many folk stoked on OFF! It’s all new music, new songs. Sure, it’s a sound that trawls back to the source, but delivers it in 2012 sounding fresh, urgent and totally alive.

A buncha roasting 7”s acted as a precursor to OFF!’s capabilities and now this 16 song album has landed (and you better believe it) it’s a totally blasting 17 minutes of raging Hardcore powered by absolutely shredding music. Keith’s all pissed and sarcastic, getting shit off his chest, spitting out 60 second anecdotes about times spent hanging on a wire in distant days (“inside the Masque, with the Alley Cats”) He’s also throwing in candid observations about his fellow citizens in the land of the free… “Teach them to shoot before they can read, sprinkling glass on their Happy Meals”…. cutting!

Seriously, this is an essential album, easily destined to make up a chunk of many folks summer soundtracks and only the most po-faced and blinkered members of the hiperatti will fail to recognise its awesomeness. Oh, and did you know that they shred live too? Thanksfully they will be back in the UK in June. You really need to see them. Get in there and get vaporized!

Are The Smiths reforming?

The SmithsThere’s lots of heat online today about The Smiths reforming this autumn for some one off shows. The source says:

“This announcement comes after a source revealed that the 80s icons had been in talks to perform with a well-known promoter. The decision was said to have been made after fellow Mancunians, The Stone Roses, gave in and reformed.”

Whether this is true or false remains to be cleared up by the Salford four piece. Regardless of internet chit chat, let us know your favourite Smiths tune in the coments below.

Ty Segall & White Fence

ty-segall-and-white-fence-hairA great example of the garage tones that eminate from the new Ty Segall & White Fence album ‘Hair‘ can be found here with a session version of the track “Time.” It’s a great introduction to a new album released this week that has been gracing our stereo here at the office made up of Californian song writer Ty Segall and Darker My Love’s Tim Presley.

Presley takes the lead on most of the vocals and lead guitars across the eight tracks on this short but sweet collab album and Segall can be found banging the drums and taking care of rhythm guitar. If your ears are warmed by 60’s inspired psych garage and indie then you should enjoy what these guys are doing here. Search and you will not be disappointed.

Ex Gallows singer releases first Pure Love track

pure_love_bury_my_bonesEx Gallows singer Frank Carter has finally released the first offering from his new musical project Pure Love this week. Switching from raging hardcore to mainstream 80’s rock, this new song written with ex Hope Conspiracy member Jim Carroll has divided the Gallows fanbase like a marmite bomb and has more in common sound wise with Manic Street Preachers, Journey and The Darkness than previous mentors Black Flag, surprising many.

Watch the video of first single ‘Bury My Bones’ and if you like what you hear get a free download of the single here in exchange for some details.

Groezrock Festival preview feature

groezrock2012The time is nearing when a significant contingent of English punk fans will de-camp to Meerhout in Belgium for Europe’s premier punk festival GROEZROCK.

Scheduled for the end of April, the event will see the cream of the crop descend on a field in the sleepy village of Meerhout once more. A mixture of old-school punk stalwarts (including Rancid), re-united greats (including Refused) and up-and-coming buzz bands (including The Menzingers) will play on a number of stage over two days.

Having become regular attendees of the festival, Winegums is excited to get over there again this year. Here is the Crossfire rundown of some top picks at the festival. It’s pretty hard to narrow them down, mind.

28th APRIL

Yellowcard

Currently working on a new album, Yellowcard make a welcome return to Europe for select performances this Spring, Groezrock being one of them. Bouncy, violin-embellished pop-punk to get everyone singing along.

Lifetime

Reformed hardcore legends will be bringing the old-skool to Groezrock this year. Expect stage diving and lots of it.

The Dillinger Escape Plan

Consistently legendary in their festival performances, let’s hope this particular set is lacking in human shit.

Set Your Goals

Best served with sunshine, Set Your Goals’ unique dual-vocalled brand of pop-punk will hopefully bring out the good weather in Belgium this time around.

None More Black

Continuing Groezrock’s theme of booking cult acts on their inimitable bill, None More Black will be showcasing frontman Jason Shevchuk’s unique gruff vocals leading punk rock fun for festival-goers across the event.

The Wonder Years

Literary references and wry autobiographical anecdotes abound in your average Wonder Years set but you can count on their delivery being anything but average. The most fun of fun pop-punk bands. Without the dumb lyrics.

Gallows

Now on the road with new vocalist Wade McNeil, formerly of Alexisonfire fame, Gallows will serve up their usual vigorous 1-2 punch of rock and roll hardcore, no doubt.

I Am The Avalanche

Following the release of last year’s astonishingly brilliant ‘Avalanche United’, I Am The Avalanche continue their campaign to play in Europe as much as humanly possible with their Groezrock slot. Get ready for fists in the air and rousing singalongs.

The Menzingers

Having just released their critically lauded album ‘On The Impossible Past’, The Menzingers have a lot to live up to. We’re convinced their live set at Groezrock will be the perfect festival event.

29th APRIL

Refused

What can we say? One of the comebacks of the year, this is surely the most highly anticipated set of the festival. When those first notes of New Noise ring out, all hell is going to break loose.

Thrice

Sadly this will be their last turn on European soil as the band announced their decision to call it quits at the end of last year. Make sure you don’t miss out on seeing one of the best bands to emerge in the last decade.

Gorilla Biscuits

More classic hardcore on the bill here, these guys are sure to be a popular draw of the festival! “Let’s Start Today” please.

Hot Water Music

With an amazing new album on the way, HWM will undoubtedly be premiering new material but you can be sure they’ll be bringing out the classics too. Maybe even that Bouncing Souls cover that they pulled out at Reading fest last year?

The Bronx

The Bronx never ever disappoint. 100 % always a must see band for optimal smiles and party potential.

The Dangerous Summer

For something rather more mellow, head to The Dangerous Summer’s set. You’ll find expertly crafted melodies oozing with heartfelt sentiment.

Andrew WK live review from the Forum, London

AndrewWK_the_forum_london

Support from Hawk Eyes and Turbowolf
12/4/12

If tonight’s show was a racehorse, the bookies would have stopped taking bets weeks ago. The chants of “Party! Party! Party!” start a good fifteen minutes before Andrew WK and his band take the stage, and it’s clear that it’d take a fuck-up of monumental proportions for this one to fail.

Hawk Eyes (ex Chickenhawk), however, make music not for celebration but for exorcism. The Leeds quartet are getting better (and more deranged) with time; their trademark squalling guitars now underpinned by a bone-crunching rhythmic rumble. They’re still the musical equivalent of a knife fight in an asylum, but now the inmates have commandeered a juggernaut, and they’re gleefully ram-raiding our consciousness.

Turbowolf are nothing short of outstanding tonight, whipping a decent-sized pit into action with thunderous punked-up anthems like ‘A Rose For The Crows’ and ‘Read & Write’. Vocalist Chris Georgiadis is his usual good-humoured self, and neither he nor his band seem remotely fazed at playing venues of this size. Greater things surely beckon.

Andrew WK’s ‘I Get Wet’ debut received somewhat mixed reviews when it was released a decade ago, but it’s undoubtedly a great party record – a glossy hybrid of industrial intensity and 80’s pomp-rock melodies, all designed to be played at ear-splitting volume to a crowd of people going nuts. He’s playing it in full tonight, backed by a WWE tag-team of a band with no fewer than three guitarists, and by the time the legendary ‘Party Hard’ is unleashed – only two songs into the set – jubilant sweat-soaked mayhem reigns supreme.

There’s no let up in energy tonight – save for the lighters-in-the-air balladry of ‘Never Let Down’ – and a fair few laughs, with ‘I Love NYC’ hastily re-titled ‘I Love London Town’. Mr. WK’s seemingly unshakeably optimism and quest for fun may not have won him much critical appeal, but as the closing ‘We Want Fun’ heralds the third – and largest – stage invasion of the night, it’s hard to think of a show more worthy of leaving your troubles and worries at the door.
