BL’AST!

BL’AST!
‘The Expression Of Power’
Southern Lord

BLAST_freedomofexpressionFollowing up last year’s well-received “Blood!” album, Southern Lord has now unleashed “The Expression of Power”, which couples debut album “The Power of Expression”, with an alternate session of its songs.

The original platter from these Santa Cruz hotheads surfaced in ’86 (on Greenworld/ Wishingwell) and is now cemented in Hardcore folklore as a solid gold Classic. So the key question is, do you really need this?

Well, for seasoned listeners “The Expression…” is not gonna alter your reverence of BL’AST! but will act as a double-barreled pummeling reminder of the high octane devastation these guys delivered in spades (like you’d actually forgotten!) And yeah, we all know they were in awe of BLACK FLAG, but there was so much more to BL’AST! Lest we forget they doggedly carried on playing off the wall Hardcore during the Eighties at a time most of their peers had broken up or moved on musically.

The demo cuts are raw and grainy, giving a rough edged slant to the songs, and captures the anger and explosive energy these dudes specialized in. Sounds mighty fine to these ragged ears! The pained and pulverising “Scream For Tomorrow” is the only unreleased song I noted, otherwise its just alternate takes on the songs that made the album.

Incidentally, I’m reviewing the tracks that appear on the CD version, but get this – the vinyl release is spread across three records, and includes another unreleased session. Even the most hardened fans will surely be Bl’asted out of their minds after sitting thru all six sides!

I know time waits (for no-one) but with BL’AST! back playing, and still totally nailing it by all accounts, it’s surely high time they hit these shores to destroy us… here’s hoping!

“Paper The House”
Matador Records

The news that these Canadian punks are back with a new album is very well received in these parts. The fact that this new track is a beautiful transition from last album ‘David Comes to Life’ is the cherry on the cake.

“The way I make a living is driving me insane!” screams Damien. Do you reckon that since having a kid in 2009, ‘Paper The House’ is a screaming anthem about growing up? Whatever it’s about, it’s one of their most melodic tracks to date and a perfect intro ahead of their new album Glass Boys that is cheduled for release on June 2nd via Matador Records. Pre-order it here.

Rasputin’s Secret Police

Rasputin's_Secret_Police‘Freaks’
Rasputin’s Secret Police
Fleeting Youth Records

Rasputin’s Secret Police are a two piece band from Philadelphia. Even though you may not have heard their two-man-made musings until now, they are in fact seasoned professionals in the art of noise making.

Having been in the business of crafting filthy grunge music together for over 13 years -almost exclusively for those in the know in Drexel Hill, Philadelphia- Brandon Ayres (guitar & vocals) and Josh Phillips (Drums) are now stepping out to a wider audience with their upcoming Fleeting Youth Records cassette release Comfortable.

The filthy grunge this band churn out comes in the most raw and primitive form. Let ‘Freaks’ be the perfect example. This track oozes a gloomy and twisted discordance, a verse of huge, wall of sound sustain and traipsing drums support a vocal that juxtaposes the honeyed tones of Billy Corgan with the wailing’s of Ozzy Osbourne. All this meanders into a chorus of what’s probably the loosest and lo-fi drum fills you’ll ever hear.

This eruptive stoner rock duo can jump from total sedation to the most electrifying noise in an instant, if you dig early Smashing Pumpkins and Dinosaur Jr then their upcoming album Comfortable is just the ear-bashing you need. If you’re savvy, waste no time in heading to their bandcamp for hours of lo-fi grunge listening.

(Or Head to this months Buzzbombs feature to hear another mean track from RSP!)

Comfortable is available from March 25th via Fleeting Youth Records.

Crossfire Buzzbombs: 10 new tracks for March

White Glove – Division Street

Let’s kick this off with some fun shit by Portland trio White Glove who bring a wedge of dope, lo-fi steez to the table. Their ‘Summertime’ EP just hit the web this month ahead a full album release. Track it down. – Zac

Bad Breeding – Age of Nothing

Mixing British punk vocals with forceful, raging hardcore and severing noise, Stevenage based Bad Breeding have only one track on offer right now after their 5 months in existence but what an introduction. This debut track absolutely fucking rips. Look out for this lot on the road whilst they hone their craft, they will be ones to watch this year without a doubt. – Zac

Jay Reatard – ‘Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle’

He may have passed away with an overdose back in 2010 but Jay Reatard left this dope Nirvana cover as part of an Record Store Day tribute album that will be available in April. He sounds like a dalek on this making it even more creepy than before. Ceremony’s cover of ‘Tourettes’ from this release has got to be the stand out. Until then, this is a great taster… – Zac

Pusrad – Smartrams EP

Pusrad feature ex-members of absolutely mental 80s high-speed jazz-hardcore-freak-out Swedish band Raped Teenagers and time has not mellowed them. The latest Pusrad EP features four songs on one side of 7” vinyl, of which only one track exceeds the twenty-second mark. Yet, in that twenty seconds Pusrad cram in time-changes, middle eights, versus and choruses, all played at hyper-speed with spot-on precision and timing. They really are something quite special. Blink and you’ll miss them. – James Sherry

NO – ‘Great Space’

It’s fair to say that The Shitty Limits were one of the best things to happen in UK punk rock over the last ten years; since their split they’re fractured into a zillion different bands and projects and here’s another. Not only do NO have one of the best punk rock band names ever, they also create a blistering high-speed noise that is smothered in feedback, fuzz, filth and distortion. How could you possibly say No to that? – James Sherry

Solids – ‘Cold Hands’

From Montreal, Solids are the finest two piece band to have graced my ears as of late. Their debut album Blame Confusion is out now and a sure must have for 2014. Crammed full of scuzzy, post-punk belters, all of which travel faster than full throttle, ‘Cold Hands’ is where this album reaches climax. It sounds absolutely unstoppable. – Dave Palmer

Rasputin’s Secret Police – ‘Zoe’

This duo are so underground it hurts. Locked away in the basements of Philadelphia for over 13 years, exclusively available to those in the know, Rasputin’s Secret Police are finally reaching out to a wider audience with this stonking new track. Lyrically a jab at a less than loyal ex-girlfriend, you can hear the sentiment in singer/guitarist Brandon’s sincere vocal, coupled with a groove so tight it feels like it could snap at any second, this is impossible to listen to and keep still. – Dave Palmer

Viet Cong – ‘Bunker Buster’

Canada’s music scene goes from strength to strength with various new bands emerging that are on our radar this year. Viet Cong is a new project you should be aware of that featuring ex members of ‘Women’. Their stunning new track delivers beautiful musical jamming and spacious sounds that will melt your ears. The full album cannot come soon enough. – Zac

Silo – ‘Stationary’

After 13 years of silence, Danish rock trio Silo are set to release a new album for April 2014. The first glimpse of Silo’s new twisted metal sound comes in the form of ‘Stationary’. Digitally sculpted guitars and dark, synchronized beats create deep, industrious drones. This is one to close your eyes to and let the monotonous vibrations take over. – Dave Palmer

King Khan & The Shrines – ‘Road Tape’

The best way to end this round up is with one of the most sensational mixtapes we have heard in a while. It has the lot, from soul to rock n’roll, to funk and hip hop, but all put together in the graceful way only King Khan knows. These fellas tour the UK next month, so don’t miss them, as Khan brings only the purest of high entertainment and a night out you will never forget. Until next month… – Zac

Tragedy strikes SXSW as car ploughs through crowds

Tragedy has hit SXSW music festival overnight as a driver ploughed through streets full of people causing absolute chaos. It’s said that at least 2 people have died and many others are seriously injured. The driver was said to be tased and apprehended.

We have a lot of friends out there right now, and that festival is full of good people who didn’t deserve to be caught up in this. Our thoughts go out to everyone involved in what looks to be a shocking moment of absolute madness.

This video filmed by Socrates Villarreal surfaced this morning recorded just minutes after the incident happened. A press conference from Austin police has also been released just now.

Former New Found Glory guitarist Steve Klein has been charged with lewd conduct with a minor as reported by Idobi today.

The band parted ways with Klein via an announcement on their Facebook back in mid December, the same day he attended his first court hearing charged with two counts of lewd conduct with a minor under the age of 14, three counts of lewd conduct with a minor 14 or 15, one count of intent to commit lewd act with a minor and one count of possession of child pornography.

Klein has already pleaded not guilty to these charges and will face a courtroom on 20th March and again on April 10th.
