Dead Confederate Live
23/2/11
Dingwalls,
Camden, London
First up tonight are Kettering quintet Blacklight Pioneer, who deal in an angular art-rock sound with a certain melodic sheen. They’ve been compared to 90s alt-rock mavericks Mansun, and whilst the two bands do share some common ground, BP’s more radio-friendly sound calls to mind more current reference points – a good or bad thing, depending on how you see it.
Dead Confederate, on the other hand, prefer to serve up their tunes with lashings of all-out sonic warfare; kicking off their set with a steadily building, hypnotic wall of distortion that would surely get the Kevin Shields seal of approval. Whilst their sound owes plenty to the leading lights of the late 80s/early 90s grunge scene, the addition of John Watkins’ swirling organ provides a great foil to the fuzzed-up guitar action that has proved a trademark of the DC sound.
The band themselves don’t move too much thorughout their live set, with singer/guitarist Hardy Morris pretty much anchored to the microphone for the duration of their set. He’s clearly happy to hide behind the mop of hair that’s plastered to his face, and when the feedback briefly subsides for the surprisingly catchy ‘Run From The Gun’, he cuts a confident yet reticent figure – not unlike that of a certain alt-rock hero from the early 90s.
Still, with an album as good as last year’s ‘Sugar’ under their belts, they’re more than welcome to invoke the old ‘let the music do the talking’ cliché. Their set doesn’t really end in the traditional sense; rather it gradually dissolves amidst torrents of wailing feedback and strobe lights, and frankly, it’s hard to imagine a finer way to be blasted out of a post-work daze. Keep an ear out for these guys.

Rumours that surfaced at the end of last week regarding the passing of Phil Vane have unfortunately turned out to be true.
The 46 year old founding co-vocalist of the British hardcore punk band Extreme Noise Terror and Napalm Death allegedly passed in his sleep last Thursday and will be missed by many in the punk scene.
Extreme Noise Terror were one of the flagship bands from the 80’s punk and hardcore scenes that had notoriety worldwide alongside Napalm Death and were also favourites of BBC radio presenter John Peel who recorded Sessions with the band for the show that introduced so many people to many underground bands that you would not hear anywhere else at the time.
I remember seeing them play Murder when I was 16 on music program covering independent music called Snub TV and it blew me off the fucking earth! My record collection was suddenly filled with the most raging music ever created including ENT, Electro Hippes, Jailcell Recipes, Napalm Death, Conflict and many others so without the likes of Phil’s raging vocals this site would have never have even been thought about. To that end we owe part of this and our lifestyles from the routes we took from people such as Phil Vane.
RIP.

Download Festival reveal 17 more acts
Def Leppard were announed as the 3rd main headline act for Donington’s Download Festival last night which destroyed the hopes of Soundgarden fans everywhere.
Many people where hoping that Chris Cornell and his revived crew would have been announced at the top slot this year after reforming but instead, the 80’s soft rockers topped the bill and were of course on the same stage 2 years ago.
The festival also welcomed Bring Me The Horizon, Madina Lake, Southern rock-blues metallers Down, The King Blues, Bowling For Soup, Frank Turner, Trash Talk, All That Remains, Black Stone Cherry, glam rock wankers Twisted Sister and more.
Pur some sugar on yourself and get a ticket.
The mighty Les Savy Fav played a packed out Heaven venue in London last night and covered the Dead Kennedy’s classic California Über Alles in fine style.
The band known as ‘one of the best live acts in the world ever’ here at crossfire are famous for their incredible cover versions and have performed outstanding versions of Debaser by the Pixies, Nirvana tracks and plenty of others over the years. Last night’s show with Pulled Apart By Horses as support was another classic to this year’s shows, look out for them at festivals this year as both bands will give you a good reason to be happy about your life, and that is gauranteed.
Enjoy this video shot by Sherry from the show.

UK Thrashcore fiends will be stoked to know that Liverpool skaters Short Sharp Shock (SSS) have announced that they are about to go back into the studio to record their new album titled PROBLEMS TO THE ANSWER.
Liverpool’s most famous thrash band are so famous now that even blonde bombshell Pamela Anderson is said to be dating singer Foxy and is in a line of female celebs that include Cheryl Cole who can’t wait to make hardcore badges and whisper Black Flag lyrics in his ear whilst he is covered head to toe in poster glue. Finding a minute to himself in a local internet cafe to avoid the local paparazzi he posted the following message online this week:
“We’re back! Had to knock things on the head for a bit, but we’ve opened up shop again. Finishing the lyrics to the last few songs then next week we record some vocals with a special guest star! We finish recording the LP on March 1st/2nd, then mix for four days from the 4th March, then we’re DONE! Release date to be confirmed, but we’re looking at June/July. Looking forward to getting out again and touring. If you want us to play in your town, let us know.”
PROBLEMS TO THE ANSWER is being recorded at Whitewood Studios in the band’s hometown of Liverpool and is being produced by ROB WHITELEY and SSS bassist MARK MAGILL. Get in.
