Duane Peters back on the board

Punk skateboarding legend Duane Peters posted something this weekend that’ll provide inspiration for everyone… he’s back on the board after his leg burst open earlier this year.

In his blog post he commented on how he dressed up as an ‘old man’ for Halloween and got shredding in a bowl.

“Felt so insanely grateful and free! I have two legs and two feet man! Gonna get me a few more sessions in.”

‘ave it!

LEMMY – The Movie

Welcome to the World of Lemmy Kilmister, the God of all that is Rock and Metal, the coolest bloke in rock’n’roll, the most under the influence and most straight talking and caring rock star we are lucky to still see sat drinking a Jack Daniels and Coke at the Rainbow in LA playing a video games on a weekly basis. Finally someone, somewhere decided to make a film about him so we went along to the UK premiere at the NFT on October 23rd to have a look at what’s coming up.

This documentary put together by Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski took 3 years to make and covers the life and times of Motörhead’s most infamous front man starting from the living room of the man himself. It’s very much like a bomb site in there, paperwork everywhere, memorabilia piled up from the door to the walls, even the bin couldn’t be spotted by the directors. Lemmy has lived in this same apartment for years, a spot where he collects his favourite Rickenbacker bass guitars and Marshall Superbass II amplifiers amongst tonnes of gifts he’s received on tours that stack up all over the place. His apartment also houses a huge amount of Nazi memorabilia; cutlasses, knives, swords, bullets, outfits and quite bizarre in the way they are all piled up in rooms – in his own words it’s pretty much a ‘museum’ in there.

The film delves into his history of watching the Beatles, being the front man of psychedelic legends Hawkwind, discussing the uppers and downers of the band’s rise to fame from the underground in detail covering the pills, the powders, the tabs and the reasons why Lemmy was left to fend for himself after being hauled into jail for carrying illegal drugs whilst on tour through the borders of Canada. You also get to see the family side of his life. His son Paul talks of the reasons why Lemmy has never married, his past relationship with a girl who died from a heroin overdose and his upbringing around the chaotic lifestyle of a touring rock star. I think one of the best quotes of the film was based around this subject when asked what his preferences were to getting blown and playing in Motörhead, he answers ‘sex can last at most about 30 minutes and Rock and Roll about an hour and a half…’ – he would choose the latter hands down.

Women still throw themselves at the man in his sixties to this very day. The directors of this movie spend time in the van with Motörhead on tour to find out what goes down and also attend a show where Lemmy guests with Metallica, one of the many great rock bands who appear in this movie to big up Stoke’s biggest star. Interviews from other famous faces include Slash, Scott Ian from Anthrax, Ozzy Osbourne, Geoff Rowley from Flip Skateboards, Dave Grohl and most surprisingly Jarvis Cocker, Mick Jones and New Order’s Peter Hook amongst others. They all praise the Legend as a man with morals and as one of the most unique rock and roll stars still living the life.

Overall, the film does cover a lot of facts already known from the various interviews he has done since he has been in the game but also offers a reminder that Britain’s stars of the past laid foundations for rock music all over the planet when they broke. Lemmy Kilmister will go down as one of the main dudes in the Rock and Rock Hall Of Fame and that’s why you should definitely have this on your to do list when it is released to cinema’s in December with a DVD release scheduled for January 24, don’t miss it.

Flying Lotus – Live

London KOKO
26.10.10

The last time I saw Flying Lotus, it felt similar to a cold winter morning when your car doesn’t properly start, so you turn on the ignition, sit for a while and wait for it to heat up. The difference being that even though you may have a clapped out Fiesta which is closer to the scrap heap than tarmac, FlyLo working full throttle is the equivalent to the A-Team van careering around Woodstock; far out.

Ironically for someone who valiantly eschews any notion of predictability during his live productions, this similar scenario happened at Koko; with an introductory blitzkrieg of off-kilter drums and keys acting as the pre-cursor before Zodiac Shit’s breezy strings seeped through the musical melee. It certainly sounded huge, owing a lot to the Harman Pro sound system, which must be a recent fixture as a few years ago it would have sounded swampy.

Nose Art had an almost teasing build up before the fuzzy bassline rippled through the crowd and shook Koko’s creaking foundations. And a delightful refix of Roberta Flack brought smiles and head nods aplenty. But it’s always best to treat a FlyLo show not as a chance to hear your favourite song live, rather as a performance of cunning ingenuity.

Visually the man is a conductor, musician, and in many respects a comedian, performing with an almost playful and visceral approach to his live work. Sounds and effects appear like it’s a jam session, and it was unclear as to whether the accompanying percussion and keys provided by Richard Spaven and Dorian Concept respectively were entirely incidental, or just an excuse to create whatever rhythms and melodies they wanted to.

Hats off to the fellow, he knows how to put on a show. Even his shadow looked awesome, and who looks at shadows?

Free Downloads – 29/10/10

As it’s Halloween this weekend we thought we’d throw in a little something related to the holiday in our round-up of legitimate mp3s you can download for free without feeling bad or paranoid. Just one though (and if you can’t work out which then you’re probably the sort of person who looks at the keyboard real closely when typing), we already have a massive and gnarly Spotify playlist hooked up for whatever party you’re throwing. Check that out over here.

Our round-up features some pretty big tunes that have dropped online in the past couple of weeks. Including Lykke Li’s seedy ‘Get Some’ and Jamie XX’s fantastic remix of Nosaj Thing that makes us question how much spare time he must have after releasing a Mercury Award winning album to be making some many bangers. There’s also cuts from Esben And The Witch, two solo efforts from Wu-Tang members RZA and Ghostface Killa, the latest Wiley banger, the first track to come from Gruff Rhys incoming solo album and new tunes from Cory Gunz, Mark Sultan and The Go! Team.

Grab them all below. And as usual, find all our previous downloads and Crossfader mixes on the Crossfire Soundcloud.

Etnies Kalmer Jacket

As I’m sure many of you have clocked on by now, it’s starting to really get cold outside and if you haven’t picked up a coat to keep you warmer than the one seat in the back of London buses then you’re either stupid or dead. Since I’m typing this I can only assume I’m not dead, but I have to thank Etnies for that as they so kindly provided me with this Kalmer jacket to prevent the tragedy that would be my stupid body freezing. Naturally, it went straight on and I embarked upon a test walk in sub-zero temperatures, the length of which that would rival your Grandad’s commute to school back in his overly exaggerated stories from times that probably never existed. So like, maybe a mile or two.

Not only did I feel totally snug in this jacket that’s fully lined with super-toasty polyester long loop terrycloth but I felt almost dangerously smart for the area of London I was walking around in. The simple black colourway is something I will forever encourage as that ish just works. The fit is not hipster tight but it’s not pseudo-fresh baggy either so even the thieving greedy bitch Goldilocks will be satisfied with this perfectly happy medium that Etnies have expertly crafted.

This is a mature coat with deep front pockets that can hold all of my useless crap. Thankfully, instead of looking like a sketchy salesman as per, this is the kind of jacket that could have you mistaken for some sort of employer at a bank rather than the unashamed floor-sitters we all are. But if you’re okay with that then don’t hesitate to get this sublimely comfortable and cozy jacket that’s just straight up super warm.

Elliott Smith

Elliott Smith
An Introduction To…
Domino Records

Seven years has passed since Elliott Smith’s untimely death (Suicide? Murder? Who knows…) and so it’s probably the perfect time to acquaint those too young to have appreciated him when he was around with the immense body of work Smith created. I’m sure there are also many who were aware of the singer/songwriter but never took the time to appreciate his work. Since Smith passed away, there have been two other major releases which undoubtedly held more interest for existing Elliott Smith fans than this latest one – ‘From A Basement on The Hill’ and ‘New Moon’. Those releases both included a hefty amount of previously unreleased material from the musical genius with ‘From A Basement…’ comprising much of the material that was intended for his next studio album. ‘An Introduction To…’ is more for those who never really had a chance to appreciate Elliott Smith’s music and need a good place to start. And a good place to start it is.

Even containing a fleeting nod to Smith’s debut release ‘Roman Candle’ with the inclusion of ‘Twilight’, this introductory collection of songs unsurprisingly features almost half of the tracks which appeared on ‘Either/Or’ – the album which brought his first real taste of commercial success. This type of success proved to be more bitter than sweet for the artist as he descended into prolonged periods of drug and alcohol abuse. Also related to the ‘Either/Or’ period and featured on this new collection is the song ‘Miss Misery’, albeit an early version of the track. ‘Miss Misery’, along with several tracks from ‘Either/Or’, was featured prominently on the ‘Good Will Hunting’ soundtrack and even earned Smith an Oscar nomination which led to him performing at the Oscars themselves. By all accounts, he was not so comfortable with this state of affairs. Despite the uneasiness Smith felt with the extreme success of his career at this point, he continued to grow as an artist and later inclusions on this compilation include ‘Waltz #2’ from ‘XO’ and ‘Pretty (Ugly Before)’ from the post-humously released ‘From A Basement on The Hill’.

There are omissions (strangely, there are no songs from fan favourite ‘Figure 8’ on this release). But that’s always going to be the case when you boil down the work of someone so talented and prolific as Elliott Smith to a mere 14 songs. The people who picked the ones on this release have done a fair job at proportionally representing the career of a true songwriting genius. Just don’t stop with this introduction.
