Dylan Rieder talks to Paper Magazine

dylan_rieder_huf_shoe_skateboard

Ph: Rudolfo Martinez

Following an amazing part in the cherry video recently and a move to Fucking Awesome Skateboards, Dylan Rieder speaks to Paper Magazine this week on how the demand for skate shoe designs are changing ahead of his pro shoe release on HUF later this month:

“More recently, it’s like kids want to spend an extra $40 on a shoe ’cause it looks a hell of a lot better than a canvas shoe wrapped in a fucking tire.”

Are skateboarders fed up of the same old designs with many companies stealing ideas from each other and producing similar looking products? As you can see above, his new pro shoe definitely has more in common with a conventional shoe rather than what we know for skateboarding, much like his Gravis model. But although these will not be for everyone, Dylan’s stance on how he sees skateboarding is a breath of fresh air. Sticking to your guns, putting a finger up to sports brands to support a skater owned industry and doing exactly what he wants can never be sneered at.

“I still think my fucking skating sucks. It’s never good enough, no matter what. So I stick with skateboarding.”

The South London reprobates also known as the Blast Skateboards crew literally had a blast with Bl’ast before Bl’ast blasted through a set of raging hardcore at the Underworld last week.

With busted noses from the pit melee aside, a Stockwell session proceeded the punk and here’s evidence. Not a yeti in sight.

Dan Cates Death Dogma IV deck

dan_cates_death_skateboards_dogma_IV_deck

Carved with one of the raddest shapes of recent times, Dan Cates’ new Dogma IV deck pays homage to legendary Brand-X skateboards with this 10″ wide fluorescent beast designed by artist DJ Titchener.

“This board has been a long time in the works and is a throw back to my early days of skateboarding as a young kid growing up in the eighties,” explained Cates today. “This graphic was originally released on Brand-X in the mid eighties and was called the ‘Dogma III’. It was, and still is my favourite skateboard graphic of all time and I would love to own one. Until then, I will be more than happy to get by on Death’s tribute to all things Brand-X and the late Bernie Tostenson who drew the original. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Dogma IV, shape drawn in our kitchen by Nick Zorlac and myself, and inspired by the nose of a Jeff Grosso, the tail of a John Lucero, and the sides of an Aaron Murray. Long live skateboarding. P.S. buy one.”

Order one of these from your local skate shop and check out the Clown series with guest legend Simon Woodstock that have dropped this week

Marc Johnson Lakai pro shoe

mj_canvas_marc_johnson_skateboard_phantom_lakai

With the British Summer in full swing right now it’s all about canvas shoes. Not only do they wash well unlike suede, they are more forgiving when it’s hot and our feet should be the highest priority considering the amount of grief we all put them through in every session.

Lakai‘s latest winner is the new Marc Johnson model. Famed for being stolen by the dude in Fight Club in the clip below, MJ has chosen a pure chiller with a slim footbed, griffin outsole and a lightly padded upper for comfort. Since the Lakai Camby has effectively taken all the honours for the ultimate off-board choice, MJ’s versatile skate shoe can either get you through a sesh or assist you at the bar. The choice is yours, but keep it skater owned for maximum stoke.

These should be in skate shops this August, ask your local SOS to order them in for you.

Skating on public art with Torey Pudwill

redbull_skatepark_skate_space

A new permanent skateable art piece has been unveiled in Seattle recently funded by a drinks brand. Question is, would you prefer to see something like this in your local town or would you welcome a one-off brand exercise where an incredible structure is built to skate and then demolished after a period time with a big event?

The UK seems to have all sorts of great structures built by these big corperations but none of them are ever sustainable. See what Torey Pudwill and Red Bull have been up to and discuss.
