Polysics

OK, let’s get down right dirty and fucked up here, welcome to the crazy world of Polysics where technology has fist fights with art and punk. Yep, you guessed it, only the Japanese can produce the very best in your worst ever LSD relapse, so get ready to hold on to your hat to get to to the end of Now Is The Time. If you thought Devo were stange then just skip the rest of this review and go back to your nice warm indie music as this can be your worst nightmare or your sunniest memory in one wild ride!

The four piece have visited London a few times, recently as guest of Kaiser Chiefs as frontman Ricky Wilson is a big fan of these 4 fine examples of futuristic splendour, but what does he see in them, what are they like? Well Polysics merge surf rock, punk rock and prog with a dirty techno edge that in no way forms this marriage as dance music. Think Butthole Surfers in 2020, think Brainiac if they had kept going, think of Cornelius on PCP and every cartoon soundtrack you ever heard on mescaline and then think about how it was all produced by Gang of Four’s Andy Gill in Tokyo, London and Los Angeles.

If you have energy to burn, get this album as it’s out this week and it’s er…bananas!

RHCP Album Leaked

It’s nothing new, but it’s gotten to Flea. The new Red Hot Chili Peppers album, Stadium Arcadium, has been leaked online ahead of its release on May 8th and bassist Flea took time out to update the band’s website bemoaning the fact.

He said: “If you down load it now off one of these file sharing sites you will be getting a pale imitation of the record and that will break my heart, it will break John Frusciante’s heart, it will break Anthony Kiedis’ heart and it will break the heart of Chad Smith.”

He continued: “I can not put in words how much this record, ‘Stadium Arcadium’, means to us, how sacred the sound of it is to us, and how many sleepless nights and hardworking days we all had thinking about how to make it be the best sounding thing we could and now, for someone to take it and put it out there with this poor sound quality it is a painful pill for us to swallow.”

The band, meanwhile, have announced a big US tour to support the record.

New Killers Album Best In 20 Years

The Killers’ frontman Brandon Flowers has said that their upcoming second album is one of the best albums of the last 20 years and that there is “nothing that touches this album”. He reckons that this isn’t him sounding cocky [he could have fooled us] but he’s just excited at the prospect of the new record.

The album is due out in September and some tracks on the record will be My Lists, Where The White Boys Dance, Bones and For Reasons Unknown.

Let’s see if he delivers on this greatest album tip shall we…

King Of The Ramp 2006

The State of The Works has fallen into disrepute. As fashion crime climbs to an all time high and the youth are swung by the charm of fake gold and jailbait sex, skateboarders are left to fare for themselves on the wild streets.

A council has been called on May 6th to elect a new King of the Park who shall reign over the Leeds skate scene for many moons to come (Read: Free entry for a year!).

The election starts at 2pm and noble whiz plank riders will be rewarded for any mastery of their joust. A court jester (Bob Sanderson?) and his BEAR (Habgood?) will be present to preside over proceedings and provide entertainment.

If you’re interested in checking this out, then make sure you mosey on over to the website, which can be found here.

Girl Skateboards – Guy Mariano 7.75

Let’s get the facts straight – Guy Mariano is a prodigal son for skateboarding, so when everyone’s favourite needs a board, you know the shape is going to be up there. I will put my hand up and admit that Girl have far from impressed me in the past with their non-existent concave and flaky wood, but this deck blew me away!

First of all the graphics are trademark simple – the Girl logo with Guy’s name. No skulls, tags, trippy shit or gimmick paint job.

Next, the shape – This board rode so well, I almost felt like the switch 360 flip was around the corner for my limited repertoire. It wasn’t, but I still put a couple of extra feathers in my cap. Girl has sorted out their shape problems and this board had just enough concave for fast response and good feel. Both the nose and tail were round which I like because it gives you a bit more room for slides and such.

Finally, the wood – The plies of this deck kept their pop after a good month or so of skating solidly, and when I did have the misfortune of firing the plank into something hard and obtruse, the wood simple indented and didn’t break away.

I’m so glad Guy is back and with boards like this skating is going to be a lot more fun.

* I snapped the board out of blind rage when stupid fruit-booters thought it was cool to wax the top of a perfectly skateable marble ledge so that they could bum slide to glory. Needless to say I ended my session in pain and lost control. I’m sorry. Don’t snap boards – crack heads.

Element Shoes – Stratus

So, Element have decided to pierce the shoe market, and Crossfire were on the receiving end of their first batch of skate shoes for a thorough testing. Here is what happened over the space of 2 weeks:

Day 1: I pick a brown leather and suede pair of Stratus Element shoes. I don’t usually wear leather shoes for fear of slippery abrasion surfaces, but these grip my board like a gorilla. I could skate the Stratus straight out of the box which is always a bonus. So far so good…

Day 5: The Stratus is a very flexible shoe so my feet aren’t hurting from pinching or strain. It is also an incredibly light piece of footwear with good board feel so you can trust your board to do what you tell it to. However, the leather ollie area is turning white, not only on my forward foot, but the switch side is also beginning to look scratched up..?

Day 10: Well, that worn leather got worse and now it has torn slightly like the broke skin of a fruit or something. The shoes are still relentless in their grip though. The sole has also worn flat, but no holes yet. It does make it tricky trying to climb up slippery skatepark banks though.

Day 15: Am I a beast at switch skating? Not to my knowledge, but judging by the gaping hole on my wrong foot wear the stitching has burst, I guess I am! Needless to say, areas of stitching have also split on my front foot, and a lace has snapped too. I could change it with the spare laces provided in the box, but they are red (?!). Not the best colour combined with brown, I must say…

So there you have it – Two weeks with my feet in a pair of Element Skate Shoes: The Stratus. Despite the apparent damage occurred, I must say that the shoes are relatively comfy and sure do grip. They have lost their shape a bit, but I think that is normal for light weight flexy shoes.

Skatesonic – Music To My Ears…

Ever wondered what a slappy really sounds like? Or perhaps the orchestra of urethane and aspalht is more your cup of tea..? Well, I just read about this on skateinfusion.com (Thanks!) and had to drop the news seeing as Crossfire deals with both music and skateboarding.

So, the Skatesonic is the brainstorm of two artist/musicians called Cobi Van Tonder and Sylvie Parent. The hi-tech board is a musical device that records the sounds of a good thrash around and composes the shred-sled notes into music.

With sensorial devices placed along the wheelbase and inside each truck, the skater can compose a melody that corresponds to the path he or she has chosen, then mix it or listen back.

Obviously the Skatesonic is just a project for the moment, but who knows? Could the I-pod/MP3 finally get budged by this new instrument?

Tea With Daewon And Haslam

If you want to catch a glimpse of the future, and ridiculous board control, then look no further than this duo: Chris Haslam and Daewon Song. The Almost tag team have teamed up for a new DVD that will blow your minds.

Cheese and Crackers is a skate-off between the Haslam and Song à la Rodney Vs. Daewon of yesteryear EXCEPT this jam takes place on a mini ramp with a whole heap of junk thrown in the mix for combos, and ‘Never Been Done’ stuff.

Then there are the multiple extras featuring Lewis Marnell, Almost’s newest amateur, a Dirt board section between Chris and Cooper Wilt, Friends and more. Just click on the picture to the right and realise that your fakie mayday just isn’t cutting it…

Scott Matthews

If it is sunny outside or even if it’s raining, this debut album from Scott Matthews should fit the bill regardless. Deciding to do it the independent route, Matthews has put together a full album that will simply melt in your mouth from start to finish and why? Because talent this good comes once in a blue moon and if you miss it, you end up being one of those people that discovers classic records in later years and misses out on the growth of something completely special.

You see, this Birmingham based singer/songwriter has taken simplicity and turned it on its head allowing his music to bury his desires deeply into your own. There are influences in here alright, like any new record and they come from greats such as Jeff Buckley for starters, but if you add the dark side of Radiohead, the light side of Lewis Taylor, and the laid back and deeply meaningful rays of Jose Gonzales you are barking at the right road sign. His voice is something you just want more of but the musicianship across all 17 tracks on Passing Stranger is something else, it just all fits.

Buckley left the world a massive gap to fill and although this man is influenced, he has taken beautifully crafted songwriting to another level that could easily sit in absolutely anyone’s record collection who loves music, period. This track Elusive you can stream on this page is just one offering, one side of the coin, so do not judge this record on one track, as the entire record has so many doors. I bet you my bottom dollar that in the future you will hear this album everywhere and will have to submit to buying it at some stage if this review is not convincing enough.

Simply delicious….
