Foreign Concrete

It’s the summer holidays and skaters are born travelers. Here’s a couple of fine concrete specimens Crossfire has heard about on the old Continent.

The guys from Tyrol and Muckefuck skateboards got down in the muck for a 5-day 14 hour sessions of sand, gravel and cement mixing under the pouring rain of Wörgl, Austria. That’s dedication that you don’t see often! Check out the pictures here.

Elsewhere, the Belgians go from strength to strength with yet another banger of a plaza/bowl complex in Hasselt. A ¾ cradle, double kinked hubbas, banks, banks to ledges, grass gaps- the whole shebang! For pictures visit www.concrete-skateparks.com and pick the Hasselt article with ‘Overview’ for ce-ment-al madness!

Gnarls Barkley Live

Hammersmith Apollo
06.07.06

Pink Floyd belting out over the speakers and a backing group wearing school uniforms aren’t exactly the setting you’d expect from the hip hop chart front runners Gnarls Barkley, but that’s the introduction they got when Cee-Lo bounded on stage in shorts and a school blazer. Dangermouse, the silent partner in the group, slunk from the background to the raised pedestal and manned the decks and other gadgets he had ready to roll.

Go Go Gadget Gospel was the first of their own tracks to blast out and with the drums sounding louder than a firework display, things were rockin’ from the very start. Cee-Lo’s demeanour is one of having fun, he was smiling throughout, even when singing, and he just looked like he wanted to have a good time. As they ran through the album’s strong points, from St Elsewhere to Feng Shui and Necromancing, the backing group grew in stature as they each came to the fore.

The string section sounded awesome and gave real depth to the performance when they were playing, and when they weren’t, they provided perfectly executed dance moves, clapping at their rights and lefts, shimming towards the floor and generally feeling the party-time vibe that was emanating from around them.

The two highlights of the night were the tracks Crazy [unsurprisingly] and new single Smiley Faces which got the desired results as Cee-Lo’s now blazer-less torso bopped and wound its way across the stage, the fantastic light show put on for the set beaming off his toothy grin. Of course, Crazy turned the night into a karaoke sing-a-long and this carried on into the encore which was finished off with an amazing cacophony of noise, bringing the fun to an end.

If you liked the singles, or if you have the album and feel that, then Gnarls bring that same entertainment to their live show. So if you can see them, and the selling out of the Apollo proved many people wanted to, make sure you go. Oh, and take your dancing shoes with you.

Black Flag

Black Flag. Black Sabbath. The two blacks. What more do you need in life? But hey, this is about Black Flag, we’ll move onto Sabbath next week. Find me a band more hardcore than Black Flag and I’ll call you a liar. Led by guitarist Greg Ginn, these street punks terrorized the world throughout the eighties with the most ferocious bursts of noise to rise from the punk underground then or since.

It was tempting to go for an older track or one of the classic early singles like ‘Jealous Again‘ or ‘Six Pack‘ but instead we give you ‘Slip It In‘ – a charging Henry Rollins led tirade that cuts a bass and drum grove that will have you kicking the legs out from under your table before drop kicking your computer into the nearest wall.

Clutch Live

Soil
Camden Underworld
07.06.06

Thousands of Britain’s heavy metal fraternity may be currently pitching tents and sinking pints at Donington, but there’s still enough eager beavers packed into the Underworld tonight to send temperatures soaring to almost unbearable climates. So scorching in fact, that it’s difficult to say whether there’s more free-flowing liquids coming from the beer taps at the bar or the foreheads of those presently in attendance.

But however unsettling the conditions there can be no excuse for the coma-inducing stall set out by Chicago quintet Soil this evening. While their distinct brand of hard rock packs more than the odd punch, it’s delivered with all the visual intensity of a dead fish. Not even a crowd pleasing rendition of old favourite ‘Halo‘ is enough to provoke more than a smattering of applause from those outside the lacklustre pit area.

While Soil may resemble the tiresome younger sibling, Clutch are the perma-cool older brother. One who will pick you up, drive you home and provide a soundtrack of super suave blues-laden rock in the process. With a set consisting heavily of tracks from their recent ‘Robot Hive/Exodus’ album, the band has almost everyone in attendance in the palm of their hand from the off. Front man Neil Fallon is the focal point as ever, jiving and stomping his way across the stage like a man possessed; belting out the likes of ‘Burning Beard‘ and the anthemic ‘Mice & Gods‘ with all the supercharged conviction of a man half his age. It’s therein that lays the true beauty of a Maryland’s finest, because much like many of the finer things in life they remain a band that seemingly only ever improves with age; and as the riotous ‘Cypress Grove‘ erupts with such explosive energy that it threatens to take the roof clean off only a fool would dispute such statements.

As ever, Clutch remain a truly magnificent live spectacle. Here’s hoping they don’t apply the brakes any time soon.

This N That DVD

What is This’N’That?

It’s a UK scene video put together by Andy Evans who captures the fun aspect of our entire country in one DVD.

It’s not his first and it certainly will not be his last, but this DVD features many skaters from the UK, Europe and the USA covering featured riders sections, skate jams and truck loads of comedy!

The movie kicks off with a rather organised domino rally made from skate DVD’s and a bunch of other stuff (how long did that take Andy?!) which leads into a sofa surfing experience with Dan Cates and Nic Zorlac from Death.

With a flick of the zappa Ben Raemers kicks off This n That in fine style with a cracking part that has everything from 540’s on vert to rail ledge and tech stuff in the streets, parks and at Crossfire Jams. Ben is a fucking ripper on a board and kicks this off in fine style.

Sections from Chris Vile, Josh Roullion are fantastic and followed by a montage of tricks from Rodney Clarke, Danny Wainwright, Simon Skipp and many many more. It’s piled deep with great skateboarding.

All of Andy’s DVD’s have a blatant comedy role throughout. Here is where the killer board from Birmingham is launched where Bob Sanderson runs through the city, and finally tracks the most venomous of freestyle decks on the planet, and can only trap the beast with the Death Stare – the only way to kill such a lethal set up. Once the stare is fixed, the board is pogo’d into submission…..

This creates the technical prowess of West London’s most digitised skateboarder, Darren Nolan, whose section is filled with swift feet and every switch, shuv, bigspin, heel, kick and double flip known to the UK’s most influential island. You’ve got to give it up to Nolan as he skates for fun and has matured his passion for technical wizardry under our very noses here at our local spots Meanwhile 2 and 3. Nolan is assures us that British Freestyle scene is growing – Apparently there are 6 people now since the last count last year! Once this video is seen across the country, that figure is sure to rise.

German Santa Cruz pro rider Claus Grabke gets a proper kickin’ from his 80’s fame, all in gest of course, but apparently used to love a pasty when he worked at a service station on the M6! (priceless!) Pete King‘s section gets down to Status Quo as Kingy rips it up everywhere which is followed by UK scene event footage from the 2005 Crossfire 7-Set Jam at Southbank, 2005’s Crossfire Xmas Jam with Circa that includes the infamous gap jam, plus loads of other amazing UK events that includes the Globe Burnley bowl jam, Div and locals at the riot fuelled Livi annual get together with Div in full flow, War of the Roses, The Works Skatepark with Neil Smith, Mikey Wright and many more. And then, The Donz is introduced……

Don Brider, one of skateboardings most treasured men, is now running the industry. So much so that this shit is gangsta bitch! Pro riders share their fear of not running tricks past The Donz and as we all know, there’s a price to pay if you are not clearing it with him…..otherwise legs could be broken as Marc Churchill finds out.

Luckily Evans managed to get footage of the Chalba before this incident and his section alongside Paul Rimmer, Amir Williams and Greg Nowik make you wanna go skating. This is followed by Mikey Wright who excels at every level and has a nbatural gift on a skateboard, it just so happens he is one of lifes incredibly charactures who was born for this DVD, as his tongue incheek deliveries are backed up with some cheeky skating only seen in the North. But it doesn’t stop here. Ross McGouran is becoming an all round destroyer and his section in this DVD just strengthens the case. He is one of the best skaters we have, he can destroy anything and should inspire kids to take part in every aspect of skateboarding if you are good enough. James Gardnerrips street spots whilst the Go Team provide the atmosphere on the decks, another gifted UK skater gets into the fold and delivers, he is another one to watch out for in 2007 but i bet he could not do a 1080 over a Spanish Galleon! Not like this geezer anyway….

There’s a bloke in this DVD who lives in a rubbish bin that has come out of the age when tapestry was the way to communicate that looks surprisingly like that bloke who is the Editor of one of the UK’s best skate mags…but with alledged sightings of Neanderthal man, Vikings and people with The Plague turning up and taking over skateparks thesedays we could be wrong. Despite this doubt in mind there is one thing we can be certain of and it’s the fact that you have to own this DVD, because it represents just how strong the UK skate scene is and also that it’s fucking great!

Watch the trailer for this movie in the usual spot on the top right hand corner of the page.

Mix Special – Urban Games

Clapham Common
30.06.06 – 02.07.06

What struck me immediately was that this year’s Urban Games was nowhere near as packed as it has been for the past few years and it was a strange sight to see hardly anyone milling around. Even from the start when we went to watch some of the skaters practise runs, walking past the BMX and the vert ramp, there weren’t many people watching and it felt as though we’d turned up a few hours too early.

What must be commended though is the music put on, especially on the Friday. Even though the crowd was quite sparse, Sway‘s demeanour always endears him to his audience and because there weren’t as many people as you’d expect, it gave Mr DaSafo the chance to have a chat with people at the front, asking who was going to buy his album and picking out the people who said they were going to illegally download it. He was even so much at ease that he told the crowd he was due to do a song with DJ Yoda but that he hadn’t learnt the words just yet so he was going to have to pass. But throughout his set, the people that were watching were enjoying themselves and the sound was very good for a small stage.

After Sway, the crowd were treated to a brilliant set by the ever innovative DJ Yoda. Not many people can stand there and mix in Johnny Cash with Motown and Crunk but Yoda did it without breaking a sweat, something of a feat considering just how hot and sticky it was in South London over the weekend. Whether he was knocking out the oldies or mixing up new stuff, Yoda always makes you get your hand to your mouth in admiration and sitting in the shade listening to him was a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

The UK b-boys were out in full effect on the Friday and despite the lack of crowd, the energy levels were high, the music was bumping [maybe Wireless can learn a thing or two from here about how to make the music sound loud] and everyone involved seemed to having a load of fun. Whilst Derby’s Trinity won the UK event, big props need to be given out to Flow Mavericks and Ghetto Lowlifes.

The next day was just as hot and a little fuller and though many people’s minds were on the football [which you could gather by the number of people gathered round a tiny TV set] it seemed as though everyone was having a blast. Skate novice though I am, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the vert comp, especially Terence Bougdour who was absolutely killing it during the time I was watching and who I couldn’t believe didn’t win!

The breaking was the highlight of the day again for me though, with the international crews getting involved. From our position sitting right by the stage, we were able to see just how technically sound every single member of each crew was and it was amazing to be as close to the action as we were. The style of every battler was amazing, and I was particularly taken by one member of the Japanese crew in his proper old skool 80s steez including fat pink laces. But it was Denmark’s Natural Effects who took the title and their moves proved that no-one could challenge that decision. Big mention also to Mouse and Blanca for grabbing the 2 on 2 crown, absolutely wicked.

It was a great weekend for the breakdancing, with the UK representing to the fullest, and the music was absolutely banging, which made for a wicked atmosphere, loads of smiles and some definitively ill moves. If the event was as packed for all 3 days as it had been for the past few years, it would have been a phenomenal success. As it was, the lack of people meant that it felt like a little bit of an anti-climax.

Glue

Take one multi-Scribble Jam winning emcee, one member of exquisite turntable crew Animal Crackers and mix them up with the beats of a prolific and forever-innovative producer and you’ll get Glue. Rapper Adeem proves time and again that he’s not just limited to battling, with his well thought out and always interesting lyrics, flowing over Maker‘s incredible beats and with DJ DQ up on the cuts, you can’t go far wrong.

This track, A Lot To Say, is taken from their upcoming album Catch As Catch Can and is to be released on the legendary Fat Beats label. The group have taken the step of putting this track up for download so as to spread the word and prove just how useful and broad the world wide web can be. But this is more than just an exercise in the internet’s potential, this is a brilliant track which showcases all 3 members’ strengths and if this is anything to go by, the album will be an absolute cracker!

Rich

Those of you who skated in the early 90’s with Zac, Richie Hopson, Gorm etc may well have bumped into our friend Richard File skating curbs and ledges schralping in Sutton and Croydon with Curtis McCann and Paul Shier. Since then, he has shared duties with James Lavelle on the U.N.K.L.E project, released a bunch of stuff on Mo’Wax Records and has also co-written the film score to cult film Sexy Beast.

On July 3rd, File’s brand new EP is released to the general public that witnesses a different side of his musical talents than heard before. “Neon One” is 3 tracks of subtle guitar work with an indie feel akin to the likes of Ambulance Ltd, Radiohead and The Verve’s psychedelic offerings, leaving you with subtlety and deepness only found in the higher regions of the Dead Meadow.

The fact that skaters continue to push music all over the world, assures me that music from this EP will end up on a skate video at some point, as lead track Big Mistake would fit like a pork pie in the hands of Shakespeare. Support other skaters and check this record out.
