Atreyu switch labels

Atreyu have got themselves a deal with Hollywood Records after having left Victory. Frontman Alex Varkatzas commented on the signing by saying:

“As a group of friends playing music our main goal is to grow and spread our brand of metallic rock around the world. We try to progress and grow on each album we record. We feel that Hollywood Records is the perfect place to continue to grow, while maintaining our freedom to do whatever the hell we want with our songs. We look forward to our future with Hollywood, they have shown a real interest in us for quite a while. To put it simply, they are down for us and we are down for them. C ya in the pit.”

New Gnarls album in the works

Dangermouse has recently told the NME that there is a follow-up to the amazingly successful St Elsewhere album and that he and Cee-Lo, aka Gnarls Barkley, have already been bouncing ideas off each other for the new album.

The producer said that the first album took almost 3 years to complete and they were adamant that they wouldn’t be rushed into the next one. He said:

“We’re going to do it the same way we did before – we’re going to do it at our pace and see what happens. When we get into the groove with things, we do the songs in bunches, and so we know that all we need to do it is go back and start working. If we love what’s coming out, then we’ll do another record; if we don’t love it the way we loved this one…then we won’t do it.”

Krooked Team Board

Krooked BoardThis board from Krooked is a standard team model, its about 7.75 x 31.75 inches with a medium depth concave and has all the characteristics you’d expect from a board out of Deluxe.

Deluxe wood always seems to be just right for me, a nice stiffness and pop, without overdoing it so you’re afraid of snapping the board any second.

I set this board up with some Indy 139’s, some reds and some 54mm spitfires. (You can obviously I trust Deluxe products). This setup was a nice mix for skating both street and park with the slightly longer board and wide trucks providing a smooth controlled ride comparable to a bigger 8 inch board whilst still retaining its maneuverability for flip tricks and skating street.

I have been riding this board for about 3 weeks now and its still kept its pop even after a lot of abuse. I’d highly recommend this board to anyone wanting a board for a variety of terrains. I’d happily give it 8/10.

Adrian.

Levellers – Choas Theory

On The Fiddle Recordings

“Are they still around?”

A question that, it seems, is often asked about the Levellers; perhaps with good reason. After all, it has been a good ten years since albums like ‘Zeitgeist‘ propelled the Brighton septet into the upper echelons of the UK charts, and they’re lucky to receive so much as a hint of mainstream media attention these days.

However, the band’s focus was always first and foremost on their live performances; and it is arguably these which have most enabled them to survive out of the media spotlight. Their vivacious, inclusive gigs have kept seasoned fans coming back to see them time and time again – even if it means flying halfway across the world – and recruited newer, younger fans through that most simple of tactics: word of mouth.

If you don’t yet know whether the Levellers’ raucous blend of folk, rock and punk influences is for you, then the first DVD of ‘Chaos Theory‘ is worth watching to hear the band in their ideal environment. Recorded at a sold-out show at the Reading Hexagon earlier this year, features a setlst guaranteed to keep most Levellers fans happy, with a clutch of newer songs mixed in with old favourites like ‘The Road’ , ‘One Way’ and ‘Beautiful Day’. Sound levels dip from time to time, but otherwise it’s pretty high quality stuff.

The second CD is geared more towards the devoted Levellers fan; featuring footage of a 2004 acoustic performance at Buxton Opera House, as well as a clutch of Clash covers from last year’s ‘Beautiful Days’ festival (with a guest appearance from a certain Billy Bragg). There’s also a clutch of amusing band/fan interviews, the (ahem) wonder of the ‘Jez Cam’ and the band’s 1993 tour documentary ‘Part Time Punks’ thrown in for good measure.

Overall, ‘Chaos Theory’ serves as a fine document of Levellers career to date. Make no mistake, if they can keep up the quality of the performances on display here, then they’ll be around for a good few years yet.

RVCA mini carnage

Damn! Finally a mini ramp comp where the winners circle actually means something. RVCA organised a sick comp last week with Art by Vegan Hessian Ed Templeton and music by Nightime Shadow, Neckface.

There was $5000 up for grabs and needless to say the skaters started grabbing, slashing and thrashing about to win the loot.

In the end it was the very unexpected but also very underrated talent of Stu Graham that placed 3rd behind Uber skills Mark Appleyard in 2nd position and Texan beast Ben Schroeder (Dig in the history books for more references!) who took top honours. The skating was off the hook, so peep this footage courtesy of Thrasher Magazine and be blown away!
