Morello talks Rage

Tom Morello recently spoke to MTV regarding the reunion of Rage Against The Machine.

The guitarist explained that the band wanted to come back to “knock the Bush administration out in one fell swoop, and we hope to do that job well”.

Morello also didn’t rule out the chance of playing more shows with the band. Fingers crossed!

The Avalanches new record info

The Avalanches have updated their website with news on their long awaited new album.

Amongst other things, the group said they will make a load of mixes available, which won’t give any hints on the album but will tide people over.

They described the record as “so fuckin’ party, you will die” and though they have no date for the record, they expect everyone to love it and are currently narrowing down 40 tracks for the final cut.

They ended by saying “one day when you least expect it you’ll wake up and the sample fairy will have left it under your pillow.”

Coldcut – Sound Mirrors DVD

(Ninja Tune)

Coldcut have always produced innovative music, splicing genres from all parts of the tuneful spectrum, and with this DVD release, they do all that and more. This DVD, which stands alongside their Sound Mirrors album features not only a DVD, but a remix CD.

So, let’s bump the CD quickly – DJ Kentaro hauls arse with his energetic drum n bass remix of ETUC, Spank Rock come in with a typically bassy and ballsy remix of True Skool, The Qemists give their own particular fuzzy and fast paced version of Everything Is Under Control and even UK rapper Sway puts his slant on True Skool. With that sort of calibre on the remix tip, you know it’s worth checking out.

Right then, onto the DVD. Every song on the album has got its visual counterpart, and every single video can stand out on its own as a terrific piece of art. But what makes this DVD such a valuable one is that every video really does fit the feel of the song its portraying and when watched in full, you are taken all over the place senses-wise.

From the charismatic appearance of Roots Manuva on the cover-art styled video of True Skool to the animation which bounces along to the thump of the bass in Just For The Kick to the mosaic backdrop of A Whistle And A Prayer, the individual styles all give the tracks another dimension.

Everything Is Under Control‘s video, which moves on a “Big Brother” style theme, runs close to the wire, showing masked riot police beating innocent people. The main character in the video is running away, trying to figure out what is going on whilst the constant flashing of the message that everything is under control tries to force its way into his consciousness.

The best video of the collection is the masterful Sound Mirrors. It begins in a similar vein to Massive Attack’s Teardrop, with its slow burning, gloomy atmospherics. Then the mesmeric turning of the light grabs your attention and slowly but surely, jelly fish evolve and are lit up against the bleak backdrop. Eventually they work their way up to the surface and onto a giant dish, which then transmits their light up to the sky.

If you’re a fan of Coldcut, then this is a must-buy as it shows just how malleable their music can be. But even if you’re not in love with the music, the videos are enough to warrant a purchase, each holding its own tiny piece of glory amongst the others.

Karma 54mm Wheels

Karma have sprouted another quality product in the form of bright fucking green wheels that stand out and stand strong!

The Karma tree has a reputation for producing plain clothes cops that do the job, and well, these rollers are no exception.

54mm is generally the preferred wheel size. Small enough for manual heads to get the flip in/flip out shit on lock, but just the right size for a cheeky powerslide when blagging some finesse. These are built to tame the ghetto streets of our homelands, which are still showing no sign of recovering from concrete acne.

Equipped with these and you’re as safe as Batman with his utility belt, soaring over cracks effortlessly leaving your lesser mortal friends sweating behind you while you cruise along ahead. I ain’t shitting you on this!

I won’t lie to you; I like a cheeky powerslide as much as the next Sergio Yuppie impersonator. And in England, the poor wheels are subject to the roughest form of torture when scraped against grit and jagged slabs of pavement bombing down your local San Fran wannabe. Unfortunately for these, I bomb hills like the USA bombs countries, but these wheels have withstood more than Hiroshima can claim. Not a flatspot in sight. Bo!

Overall, another gem from the Karma heads. Don’t even consider overlooking them especially as you can pick them up afrom your local skater owned shop for £20.00!

France wants SOMA

Did you have to read George Orwell’s Brave New World when you were a teenager?

Well, if you did, you might remember a key element – Soma: the political drug that kept everyone happy and unaware of reality.

Now, you might remember Crossfire mentioning how the French Skate magazine market needed a reality check when two of it’s top titles, Chill and Freestyler got knocked the f*** out of the biz.

Rumours were running rampant about any chance of a come-uppance for the fallen, and today confirmation has arrived that a new magazine is on its way! Fred Demard and David Tura, renowned skate journalists and overall top blokes, have put their heads together to bring the French scene some much needed Soma. Watch this space.
