King of the Craic incoming!

Inspired by Thrashers ‘King of the Road’ and Newcastles ‘King of the How Man‘, Boggin Zine have devised their very own version which should keep everybody happy!

Here is the rough format.

1. The date shall be the first dry weekend in November.

2. Teams should be made up of no more than 7 people, anymore and points will be deducted.

3.If a team needs a filmer one can be designated from a team with more than one cameraman. 4. King of the craic will be points based for a fairer result.

5. Teams are to be entered by the Thursday prior to the weekend.

6. Teams will be given specfic challenges on the Friday by email or can be collected at concept and holla skateshops, this , is when King of the Craic will begin!

More details will follow, but challenges will be so that you can do a lot of them ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY!

Some teams may have to travel to complete some challenges,(eg. skate a full pipe) but there will be enough challenges that can be done in your home town/village that you could accumulate as much points as a team with a car/money to travel. (eg. do a triple kickflip, film a line with all skaters in team etc.)

For any more info and a full list of the guidelines visit www.bogginzine.com or email Kellz.

Andrew Reynolds GVR footage

As we reported yesterday, the Goof vs Regz competition was won by the Regular team, including Andrew Reynolds who is featured in this little video from Active, as well as Terrell Robinson, Billy Marks and David Loy.

Makes you wonder if this was just a warm-up run, my guess is yes.

Cantelowes left in the dark

As you all know it is getting dark early now and Camden are going to shut Cantelowes skatepark at 4pm and without the use of the football pitch lights it will be impossible to skate for most people.

We need to drive them mad with comments and emails. We need lights for the skate park and for them to close at 9pm. Or later if we can push for it. Please take time out even if you just send one email or comment. The more pressure they get, the more likely action will take place.

The link below gives you a list of options of how to get into contact with the council.

And wait for it, first prize for the street competition is a massive £100,000, with $75,000 for 1st place vert, and $25,000 for 1st place in the women’s comp. Better get some serious training in then.

Duffs – Bones and Blocks (Sports Zip)

It is inevitable, that when you are painfully fatigued, let’s say from a routine trip to the local shops (that are far too much of an undesirable walk away to be claimed as ‘local’), that there will be something to stop you in your tracks and serve you up a banquet of bewilderment.

Normally garnished with a sprinkling of ‘what the fuck?’. I kid you not. Next time you feel exhausted, just wait for it, you’re more prone to attack from the beast of confusion than at any other time of the day. I don’t know why. And I certainly still don’t understand the reason for my encounted with monsiuer madness, but, just like I said, it was inevitable.

Literally, a mere few metres from the haven of my kitchen, where I was waiting to unload five remarkably heavy bags of shopping, I was brought to a halt by some raving romanian. “Hey you! Yes, that’s right, you! You with the shopping!” After being blinded by the array of exclamatives, I thought best to entertain his demand and see what he wanted. His first question was,

“Do you know anyone ginger?”

What the jeeping shit do you say to that? No, can’t say that I know a single person who is ginger, sorry. Honestly, some people. Anyway, I inquire as to why, and he continues,

“Ginger. little bit shorter than you. know him? Where can I find him?”

The Grand ol’ Duke of Vague continued with such pathetic descriptions of the mystery ginger, and as the conversation continued, I began to worry what he intended to do upon finding the poor sod. Turns out this romanian fellow was rudely awakened the night before by this enigmatic red head, and he wanted to seek revenge. The guy bore an uncouth resemblence to that shouty fellow in ‘300’, so I felt best to leave as soon as possible. Unfortunately, when I told him that I could be of no assistance, his tone changed dramatically. It’s amazing how much you can tell about someone’s mood from a tiny change of pitch in their voice.

No. Not good enough. I must find him. Help me. Or else.”

I had to flee from him and his ridiculously short sentences as soon as possible. So I quickly made some excuse about my frozen goods melting and hurried away. As I escaped, he shouted,

I will keep eye out for you. You have memorable jacket.”

You may wonder why I have decided to tell you about this. Truth is, how much can you say about a piece of material that is designed to keep you warm and as a cheeky bonus make you look fly? Basically, Duffs have made this jacket you can see in the picture above, it’s nice and comfortable, keeps you warm in the harsh british winter, and in my opinion, looks pretty damn fresh. What more else is there to say? If you dig it, go and get it. Just be warned, it apparently stays deep in the mind of vengeful Romanians. Make of this what you will.

Regulars take the title

Regular came back with a vengeance and won the fourth annual etnies GvR yesterday, putting the Goofies back in their place.

The Regulars put a stop to the Goofy winning streak, scoring 1951.75 points over Goofy’s 1910 points. Rick McCrank was voted MVP by the Regulars, and he certainly earned it with his big bag of tricks throughout the finals!

The Regulars put Slap Magazine editor Mark Whiteley in charge, and he hand picked Ryan Sheckler, Andrew Reynolds, Leo Romero, Rick McCrank, and Sean Malto as the starting five for the finals. It was one of the remaining ten regular qualifiers, Luan De Oliveira that scored the most points for his team and took home 15,000 bucks.

The event was finished off in the evening by a huge gig from Yeah Yeah Yeah’s who took the stage in the parking lot above the skatepark in front of the more than 7,000 fans

Brighton Level Jam review

Words, video and photos: Liam Teague

It’d been a long four years since the last competition down at The Level, so there was certainly an air of high expectation surrounding this event. And it certainly didn’t disappoint. A combination of good music, a brilliant turnout, some amazing skating and some entertaining mic skills from Pasty made for an truly memorable day.

Weather was always a concern as the day approached, and feeling the drizzle as I got off the bus in Brighton I was naturally a little apprehensive, but the park was still more or less dry upon arrival and the rain held off for the day. The jam even started more or less on time, a rare occurrence in skateboarding I’m sure you’ll agree.

The jam started off with the qualifying rounds, taking the form of groups of three or four skaters at a time with a two minute run. This saw a very impressive number of entrants, which would have been even better if it weren’t for the large group with good intentions but who had unfortunately arrived too late to sign up. Nevertheless there was some amazing skating on display in both the sponsored and unsponsored groups, including the likes of Level locals Louis Cooper, James Kilpatrick, Tom Felix, Amir Williams, Isaac Miller, Stevie Thompson, Voi Smith and many more.

After the heats were done and a short interval of absolute chaos with 300 kids trying to skate at the same time, it was time for the finals, which consisted of the best performers from the qualifying rounds each having their own individual two minute run. I can tell you it certainly is nerve wracking knowing that all eyes are on you, but that didn’t seem to phase any of the entrants as some even more impressive skating was churned out by the park regulars who all obviously know the park like the back of their dirty hands.

The unsponsored finals were up first. Mini gangster Ollie Chapman managed 3rd for his stylish run. Henry Kanning took second place for his effortless skating, cruising about the whole course ollieing and grabbing everything in sight. But it was young ripper Isaac Miller who took first place, getting a frontside flip over the big bank to bank gap, one of the most solid, nonchalant tre flips I’ve seen over the hip, and much more amazing skateboard trickery.

Finally were the big guns, the sponsored finalists. This was where we got to witness some absolutely incredible tricks and crazy consistency from the riders, all going big and going off.
3rd place went to Tom Felix, skating everything with his powerful style. He took a rocket speed crook down the handrail, and a scorpion like slam trying to feeble it. He also managed an absolutely huge benihana over the bank to bank. You geeks might just change your mind on that trick when you see it.

James Kilpatrick came 2nd. His run was absolutely mindblowing, landing literally everything with effortless style and finishing off his line with a line 270 flip over the bank to bank.
But the final place went, just as it did 4 years ago, to ex Karma pro and Brighton ghetto man Amir Willams. He certainly earned his place and tore the park a new one with a backlip down the rail, frontside flips out the the quarterpipe and amongst much else pulling a perfect flip frontside boardslide down the rail at the end of his run.

Honorable mention goes to James K, who won a hundred quid put up by Nike 6.0 in their “Killing it” comp, sort of a MVP deal. Well deserved as well, James ripped it up all day, just after winning the Crawley comp last week.
Just time for a best trick comp at the end, with the handrail being the object chosen for the hungry kids to sack themselves on on the quest for some free proddy. A vast amount of NBD’s went down all in the space of about 20 minutes, including Louis Antoine’s flip back fifty, a flip noseslide from Tom Felix, and Aaron Revell taking the prizes with a faultless front feeble.
And that was that, just time for the product toss which saw dozens of kids kicking each other in for shirts, stickers, a beef pie and even an empty cardboard box! Thoroughly entertaining and as always a little embarrassing to watch, but if it keeps ’em happy then so be it, these idiots are the future of skating!

All in all a great day had by all. A huge thankyou to all involved in making this day happen, and it couldn’t have been done without the support of everyone who showed up, whether to help out, get involved, skate, watch and cheer, or just mug kids for stickers.

Keep your eye on the third series of Curbsurfers for the full video documentation. In the meantime, click here or on Amir William’s face for a preview of what went down at the Jam.
