Quid Pro Quo

Despite being awash with ‘talent’, skateboarding does possess a couple of real diamonds in the rough. Brent Atchley is one of those and Element are ready to send him to the polishers!

As of March 1st 2006 (i.e. this year, duh!), Brent’s pro model will be available in all good skateshops for purchase and subsequent thrashing.

Meanwhile, Brent is reportedly busy filming for another flawless video part…..can’t wait.

Hull Scene Site!

Hull is probably one of the strangest Cities going on the UK map. I have been there a few times to trips to the old Blue Lamp venue which has probably now been taken down and replaced by something far more upbeat.

Musically Hull boasts new bands such as The Paddingtons, The Johnson’s, Mr mo jo, 59 Violets, The Favours, Superscape, and Turismo busting out a brand new scene which makes the city buzz.

News came in this morning that a new website has been developed by local skaters representing their local scene in Hull, so pack your tramp in a bean bag and shed your mince pies on what’s on offer up there including a latest scene DVD that you can enquire about by visiting www.welcometohull.com

I-Path Yogi

The infamous I-path Yogi is a shoe well know by skaters everywhere. Designed by ‘hippie’ pro skater Matt Field. The shoes I had were the suede version and were black.

The shoe looks simple but feels nice and is very functional. It has a well padded tongue with a relatively large stash pocket in the front. They have gel insoles to absorb shock and the soles are very flexible which leaves you with a comfortable board feel.

The sole is very grippy even with worn down griptape but not too grippy. Just right for the balance between Ollies and flip tricks. While I have been skating in the shoes I found it easy to get used to them from my old shoes (88’s) and have found a lot of tricks have become easier.

Overall this shoe has been excellent to skate in and I would definitely consider getting another pair in the future.

Satori Movement – Mapping Time in Space

So, the video starts and bears the unholy words ‘tour video’, but don’t fret, dry your eyes and sit down. Though the animation and ‘starsign’ style editing is a little cheesy, it’s kinda charming and adds a good, albeit a bit of a simple theme. There are no narratives, there’s no melodramatic nonsense about how hard it is to sleep on tour or even much park footage.

This, along with the city based footage makes it a welcome change to the monotony of most tour videos used to tide over the companies fans for the timebeing. With a team that boasts Steve Olson, Matt Pailes, Lucian Moon, the powerhouse that is Brent Atchley and new addition Kenny Reed, the level of skating is high and diverse as ever, I’m sure you don’t need or want spoilers. Good clean fun, in unseen territory.

One complaint I have is that it drags on a wee bit, but as I was watching this at 2:30am in a freezing cold warehouse that might have something to do with it..Well worth the cash, and for footage of Steve Olson who wouldn’t pay that?

Brophy joins DVS

ANDREW BROPHY has left Circa Shoes and is the latest addition to the European team over at DVS who seem to be marching strong for 2006.

Originally from Margaret River, Australia, 20-year old Brophy has been living in London for the past three years, skating the famous South Bank on a daily basis, as well as traveling throughout Europe. His pop and great style have made him one of Europe’s most promising amateurs and earned him an official spot on the Cliché roster.

If you have not seen Brophy’s latest photo in Sidewalk Mag then you are missing out. He ollies a huge, waist height road gap at mach 10 with ease. Look out for it in a future Moves Gettin’ The Moo’s on this site.

DVS are obviously chuffed to welcome Andrew to the team, Mathieu Tourneur, DVS European team manager has been quoted to say “Andrew’s motivation and ability on a board are unbelievable. We’re really excited about his addition to the team“. Mathieu has also denied rumours that he locks up on fakie rocks on mini ramps at Bay 66 lunch-time Revival sessions, but Matt Anderson, (another spokesman from Revival) has mentioned that if it came down to it, his rock fakies would be fit to compete in this summers proposed company comp at Bay 66!

Andrew Brophy joins fellow DVS European riders Paul Shier, Mark Baines, Janne Saario and Kristian Bomholt.

Go to www.dvsskate.com for more info and look out for the DVS Europe website coming soon.

Element T-Shirt

This is one of a new range of t shirts Element have brought out for its Spring 06 range. The t-shirt itself has the classic element style logo with what appears to be a crest either side of it. I thought it looked like it had been given a wood effect.

The material was pretty good and seems like it could resist a good skating. Element products are usually of a high standard and this t-shirt is no exception.

Go to www.Elementskateboards.com to see the full range.

Routes by Morph

Ah! Finally a good scene video that I can sit through without hitting the fast forward button! Aspiring videographer, Morph assembled a bunch of friends and Long Live London crew members to put together Routes and take you on a journey through London’s streets.

The chosen few are Chris Ault, Joe Buddle, David Davies, Alex Greaves, Noodles, Matt Simpson, Joe Sivell and Jak Pietryga, and all of them put on a good show with tech ledge tricks as well as the mandatory big snaps. I think the obvious head turner of this DVD is Jak, but Joe Sivell, David and Chris are also noteworthy.

The overall presentation is clean and concise with a bit of time lapse footage, some slo-mo action and a varied soundtrack that should please any listener. Take note of Morph and his gang of merry men because they are the young blood that runs through the City’s veins. Well done!

Whassup with UKVM?

UKVM launched a couple of years ago and then dissapeared into the ether and has never returned but is it dead? What happened to it? We caught up with Jon Drever, the driver behind the entire project to see if there was a chance it would re-ignite to fuel the flames of the UK scene…..

Looking back Jon, was this difficult to set up?

“Well, UKVM was started in my bedroom in my parents house about three years ago, I’d been making skate vids for a few years and thought the UK could do with a regular, all-inclusive and cheap video magazine. It was a full time job for absolutely no money, in fact, due to being ripped off by various folks, the whole project cost me thousands!”

This is no joke, as most people in skateboarding find it very difficult to make a sustained living from the scene but did you follow advice from various people, did you get the support?

“Various people gave me loads of support and advice along the way, especially Ben Powell and Zac. The featured skaters were all really cool and into the project, and a few filmers chipped in with footage (Toby ‘Death’ Batchelor, Paul Silvester and Kev Parrott to name a few). Obviously I got a lot of shit as well, some people weren’t into the films and didn’t like the fact that I included interviews with the skaters and a bit of background info on the scenes and the people in the scenes. Basically, UKVM was never meant to be about skate ‘porn’ (just bangers with no story line), but about the UK scene as a whole. Anyway, after issue 2, the money had run out so I brokered a take-over deal with a TV production company. They were to own UKVM and I was to work for them to make it. It seemed ideal because I got to pay my rent, and UKVM would expand and become something we could all be proud of. But, I became one of their key directors and was sent on all kinds of work, I started filming everything from street football to monster trucks. It was great experience but UKVM got left behind. Issue 4 was a year late and only just got produced.

Did the takeover kill it?

“I suppose the takeover did kill it a bit, yes. But, it saved its life for a bit longer. Without the takeover issue 4 would never have happened”.

Does it have a future?

“The future of UKVM is this, and you heard it here first…I’ve just set up a production company with a pro snowboarder friend of mine (Count Orlando von Einsiedel, no shit, he really is a Count!), and we’ve won the contract to make the next series of GenEx which is the Extreme Sports Channel’s flagship show. It means loads more core skate stuff shown on an international stage. You’ll hear more about that here, on Crossfire (If anyone’s got anything they really think should be in the show get in touch at info@grain-collective.com). Anyway, this means that I don’t have the time to commit to UKVM, and I’m looking for someone who can take it over for me.

It needs to be someone who’s got loads of filming experience and obviously is well hooked up in the skate world. I don’t want UKVM to die, and it can still be made into something amazing that everyone in the skate community can be proud of, and involved with. So, if you think you’ve got what it takes to run a quarterly video magazine, get in touch: info@ukvm.co.uk
