Franz Turn Down £30m

It has been revealed that Scottish group Franz Ferdinand were offered $50m to have their music used in an advertising campaign but the band turned it down, because they wanted to keep their integrity.

This comes just a week or so after Jack White’s work for Coca-Cola was premiered and reports are that doing this campaign would have quadrupled sales of Franz’s last album You Could Have It So Much Better. Frontman Alex Kapranos said:

“It wasn’t Coca-Cola or anything like that. It was just a thing that needed some music associated with it. We just had to say no because of the gut reaction.”

De La Soul Live

Jazz Café
29/04/06

Now I admit, I’m not the biggest De La Soul fan in the world. I like a fair few of their songs, but I wouldn’t put them in any of my top artists lists, but after seeing them rock the Jazz Café for almost 2 hours, I now know they are definitely on a must-see artists list.

The venue was packed, but the vibe was chilled until the three men came onto the stage, and then the entire place just went ape. Not only were the two MCs ready to get every single last person in the place involved in the show with their constant back and forths with the crowd, but Maseo stepped out from behind the decks with his infamous Transylvanian cackling laugh at gave the crowd a show of his skills on the mic too.

After the entire venue had declared to the men on stage that they loved hip hop forever, and we’d been with a triple beatbox, the anthem Me, Myself and I bellowed out and was met by a sea of raised arms and pumping fists. In between classics like that and the entrance of 5 women from the crowd being allowed up to dance on stage, De La showed they hadn’t lost any of their charisma and love for the music in the long time they’ve been around.

The songs that sounded the best to me, were the relatively new ones, the snare drum in Oooh and Rock Cocaine Flow were ridiculously brash and forced the head back and forth and the brilliant All Good almost stole the show. But what really took the night to that higher level was the closing track of Ring Ring Ring, when every single person in the venue was reciting the chorus and the beaming smiles were plastered across De La’s face.

Full of energy, soul and most importantly, fun, this was a show I’m delighted I went to. If you get the chance to check out a live De La show, make sure you do it.

National Slayer Day

Thrash metal legends Slayer are to be honoured in the most bizarre of fashions this year, with June 6th (06/06/06) set to be proclaimed ‘National Slayer Day’.

Followers are being advised to stay at home and avoid all forms of work, instead choosing to listen to ‘South of Heaven’ at blistering volume. Other advised methods of worship include full scale rioting, spray painting the infamous Slayer logo on local churches, and slaughtering the pets and first born of neighbours.

For more information on this most unholy of days, see www.nationaldayofslayer.org

Mogwai Live

Liverpool Academy
05/04/06

Striding on-stage with pride in their hearts and co-ordination in their track-suit tops – to celebrate Celtic clinching another Scottish Premier League title, apparently – Mogwai make for a slighly-less-than rock ‘n’ roll sight. Follically challenged, almost wholly devoid of style and with facial features perhaps only a mother could love, they represent the antithesis of pre-packaged pop clone nonsense. Then they plug in and play and suddenly things begin to make sense.

Are these Scotsmen louder than thunder? Louder than war? Louder than permitted, safe noise levels? The answer to all three is, surely, yes. Regularly swapping instruments between songs (and was that really their tour manager making a guest appearance on cymbal?) their output is more the stand stock still and rhythmically rock your upper body type rather than the more familiar jump up and down style, yet the collective power summoned is nothing short of immense.

And, despite a mid-set, mid-paced lull that offered opportunity to visit the venue’s shockingly priced bar for urgent refreshment, Mogwai manage to effortlessly confirm their status as the country’s most accomplished noise merchants. So, with the evening only slightly tainted by a second encore of excruciating white-noise, it appears there’s plenty more gas (and volume) left in their tanks. Mogwai: consistently one louder.

Gorillaz – Demon Days Live

When Damon Albarn’s animated group blew everyone away with their last album Demon Days, it didn’t seem possible that people would have the chance to hear the record live. However, Gorillaz managed to get almost every performer on the album to come together for five nights in Manchester, and put on a show that was recorded in its entirety for this DVD.

Instead of seeing the cartoon band playing live, as had been done in short blasts for MTV awards and the like, the stage was full of musicians, from guitars and drums, to a line of vocalists and a full orchestra of strings. The musicians were all cast in shadow, but regardless the silhouette of Damon Albarn as the intro started garnered huge applause.

There were many highlights in the set, but in particular the appearance of a kid’s choir for the single Dirty Harry and the emergence of a beaming Booty Brown to join them, Ike Turner coming out looking more dapper than ever before and belting out a jazzy piano solo and finally the encore which signalled the emergence of the humble Albarn into the light, alongside a beautiful Chinese zither backing before he introduced each section of the stage.

With brilliant music, a constantly changing vocal line up on stage and amazing graphics playing on a giant screen at the back of the stage, this wasn’t just a concert. It was a visual and sonic extravaganza, and this DVD captures it in all its glory. It can’t touch the real thing, obviously, but it’s as close to it as you can possible get. After watching this, you’ll definitely be part of Feel Good Inc!

Lil Kim On Lockdown

The prison that houses Lil Kim has been put on lock down after a visitor to the jail tried to smuggle in a mobile phone. Over half the entire population of the prison is on lock down and has been since 21st April.

An investigation is underway after rumours that the phone was for Lil Kim, but her lawyer has vehemently denied this rumour, saying it has nothing to do with the rapper, and that she has been a model inmate since going inside.

Jack White’s Coke Ad Shown

White Stripes’ Jack White has had his Coca-Cola advert showing on channel 4 on Sunday morning. And whilst there are no plans for it to be shown again on UK television, you can check it here.

Strangely, Jack White is reported to have always had a fascination with the Coke brand and doesn’t want to do any other advertising other than for them. Each to their own.

Keith Richards Injured

Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards has been hospitalised in New Zealand after injuring himself in Fiji. However, the injury isn’t what you might think, in fact, it happened after he had climbed a tree and a resort on the island and fell from it, hurting his head.

He was taken to hospital suffering a mild concussion, but the Stones will carry on regardless, gathering no moss.
