Tyler, The Creator speaks out against U2’s new album

tyler_bono

U2 invaded your iTunes library last week with their ironically titled new record Songs Of Innocence. The 11 track album crept inside your computer overnight without warning. How would you notice? How many other bands begin with “U” apart from UB40? And who in their right mind has UB40 on their iTunes? The next time you’re scrolling down, making you way to The Velvet Undergound, you’ll be greeted by Bono & Co, waving their innocence right in your face. Don’t you wish you’d read those terms and conditions when you signed up for iTunes now?

Unsuprisingly, these actions caused quite a stir with, well, everyone that doesn’t like U2. Which happens to be quite a lot of people. Tyler, The Creator is but one of many who chose to voice their opinions on the matter through Twitter. See his reactions below.

Grandmaster Flash caught in a Facebook mix up

grandmaster_flash

There’s been a significant rise in the amount of pensioners turning to Facebook in recent years. With the ever expanding world of smartphones and 4G internet, everyone’s online. Even your Nan. And look at the fuss she’s caused for hip hop’s favourite messenger, Grandmaster Flash.

The auto-fill function when posting statuses has unfortunately screwed over a large ammount of Grandmothers across the globe, causing them to accidently tag themselves as the Grandmaster himself when signing off a status update. Naturally, there’s a tumblr page dedicated to this tom-foolery, check out the aptly titled Love, Grampa and Grandmaster Flash.

Head to Flash’s own Facebook page to watch his video response to the grandparents of the world.

Foo Fighters live at the House of Vans London

The Holy Shits aka Foo Fighters
Live at the House Of Vans, London
September 11th

foo_fighters_nathangallagher

I love Dave Grohl. Mission Impossible. Scream. DC Hardcore. Dain Bramage. Nirvana. Probot. Sound City. I USED to love the Foo Fighters. When that first album came out, we were so desperate for at least some kind of continuation after the brutal, shocking end of Nirvana and Grohl made us smile again, with Pat Smear grinning beside him like a Cheshire cat and a batch of superb, high-energy melodic rock songs to win us over. That first Reading Festival set in 1995, the chaos in the tent, those great early singles…then Grohl steadily slipped into a far safer mainstream stadium/radio rock path and the excitement waned. You can’t blame him, he’s an incredibly talented melodic rock song writer but for those of us raised on 80s punk and discordant 90s noise, it was a path that just didn’t excite.

So I stopped paying attention. At least, I thought I did. If I did then how the hell do I know pretty much every song of the entire two-hour plus set they play tonight? The Foo Fighters are in town, ahead of a forthcoming release of their new album, to fire up their cylinders and get back into live touring mode with a batch of ‘intimate’ shows (playing under the name The Holy Shits!) and tonight, under the tunnels of Waterloo, they power through a set packed full of hits and you realise that yes, you know every song because they’re great.

You’d have to be a pretty joyless fucker not to enjoy this. Sure, I have no real desire to watch the Foo Fighters play in a stadium, but the chance to see them live in a venue this size couldn’t be passed up. And they don’t disappoint. For a start, the sound is incredible, an amazing achievement considering the booming acoustics of the brick tunnels, and the songs come so thick and fast, high-energy, Pat Smear still cool as fuck (he was in in THE GERMS FOR FUCKS SAKE!), Taylor Hawkins blazing on the drums (how anyone can have the nerve to play drums behind Dave Grohl, I have no idea but this guy pulls it off) and they play ‘This Is The Call’ and ‘For All The Cows’ from that first album and I fall in love with it all over again. They play all of the hits. You know them, I don’t need to list them. This is a crowd pleasing set. Nice guy Dave wants to please.

I leave smiling and sweaty. I think I just fell in love with the Foo Fighters all over again, just for the night. A one night stand.

The Cockpit in Leeds to close after 20 years

cockpit

After 20 years as an integral part of the music scene in Leeds and the North of England, The Cockpit announced yesterday that it has been forced to shut it’s doors permanently due to severe maintenance work the building requires.

Having temporarily closed back in July to carry out maintenance, yesterday the venue published this statement on their official websiteIt is with great regret that we have to announce the permanent closure of the Cockpit. After 20 great years as an integral pillar of the Leeds music scene we have decided that it is no longer viable to deliver you the level of service you deserve with the building in it’s current condition.

Despite this sad news, the current resident promoters at the venue will continue to book and promote artists in and around Leeds. In addition, The Cockpit are in the process of relocating all upcoming gigs to alternative venues with any tickets already purchased remaining valid.

Ty Segall

‘Manipulator’
Drag City

The crowned king of contemporary garage rock and all things fuzz has shared a new, rather wacky music video titled ‘Manipulator’, taken from his new album of the same name.

This isn’t just any old music video, mind you. This is an interactive world in which bedroom curtains become hot dogs, jumbo jets shape shift into seabass and babies heads fall from the sky without warning. A fitting visual aid to Ty’s new music as, aurally, ‘Manipulator’ is a whirlwind of colour.

Ty’s stylistic choices of layering sludged chords with riffs that sing with sustain, a dueling falsetto and organic organ warble all keep ‘Manipulator’ afloat in a scene often awash with overly retrospective music. Undeniably influenced by an unfathomable collage of psychedelic tones from the past, present and probably future too, Segall remains ahead of the pack sounding fresh and ready to play his next hand.

Running in the same vein as their June debut, If Anything, Greys are waving the flag high for ear shredding, Discord-era noise. Play this one loud and catch them on tour at the dates below.
