Real Skateboard by Obey Giant 7.81″

Dude, when somebody gives you a skateboard so limited that only 500 of them were produced, you say thank you very much, buy some Jessup tape and you set that bastard up quicker than you can do uncle Ben’s rice in a microwave. The artwork is cute and all, but it’s a piece of wood at the end of the day and it was made to ride and slide, not to wall mount and dollar count.

This board is, like any other real board I’ve had, fucking amazing! It took me two sessions to find my feet, but it is such a rad board once you’re settled in to it, it will definitely have you grinning for more and more. We strive to find that happy shape, you know, perfect tail, sweet nose and short in height (my specs of course); that’s exactly what this baby does for me, it just sits right. There’s not a lot of concave either and it’s a surprisingly light piece of wood too. I had an obsession with Cairo Foster’s Real‘s back in the day, they were perfect and I ended buying like 5 of them. To this day, I have no regrets about my moment of madness, just happy inner peace and of course that great feeling of ‘I told you so, now fuck off!’!

Deluxe wood seems to be the ones I enjoy most these days and it definitely has a lot to do with a skateboarding attitude, opposed to an ebayers gold mind. The shapes are brilliant, the size is perfect and the wood is cracking (not literally!). It’s a great graphic too, but hey, the artwork’s long gone and the board still kills concrete everywhere. Think mine was like 163 / 500, oh well, hope the other 499 boards made it out of the cellophane and onto the open road; it would be a shame to waste your road tax by keeping that baby under wraps.

The board comes with some free stuff too, stickers, stencil, DVD etc, so it’s not a bad buy if you think about it.

Nike and Almost ripper Lewis Marnell dropped into the Crossfire office this week to say hello so we decided to interview him off the cuff.

Expect words to drop here when we can get them typed up innit. They include spider stories, near death experiences with Dustin Dollin and all fuelled by reggae and dancehall.

He seemed pleased with his new video part for Nothing But The Truth which is out soon but in the meantime watch some footage of him with his mate Dustin here:

The Rip Offs – Live

Wurlitzer Ballroom, Madrid
11.10.07

I’ll admit, I wasn’t too keyed up on The Rip Offs but some of my learned brother-in-arms advised that this San Francisco quartet is ‘legendary’ live. A bit of background research beforehand revealed that, after all amount of trials, tribulations and infighting, this is the bands first trip back to Europe with their original line-up in about 12years. I figured I better hot rail it down to the Wurlitzer, and see what the deal was.

And the deal was this; after a couple of so-so support bands, The Rip Offs stormed on to the stage and laid in to 60+ minutes of filthy and raw stripped to the bone Punk RocknRoll, as tight as it was chaotic, with relentless taunting and baiting of the rammed frenzied crowd… (“ya fuckin’ Mexicans” proving to be a popular refrain) It was the day before a long weekend in Madrid and the punters were up for it big style, with the insults flying thick and fast from either side. Tension and adrenaline was at a premium. At one point guitarist Shane White is dragged off the stage, there’s an altercation, and he furiously swings his guitar above his head, preparing to take someone out… in a flash bassist/frontman Greg Lowry steps in to calm things down before we get a blood soaked re-enactment of Sid Vicious at Randy’s Rodeo, San Antonio.

And talking of Greg Lowry, the sometime Zodiac Killer, a man who clearly has a ‘thing’ for serial murderers, does have something of the night about him too, looks about as creepy as a guy dressed in black wearing a stocking mask over his head can do. On the far side of the stage from where I’m checking out the action is guitarist Jon Von, still going hard at it. I’ve not seen him play since Mr T Experience played at The George Robey, London Town back in the 1900’s. And holding it down at the rear, the grinning Shane White beats the “worst drum kit he’s ever played” to a pulp.

Equipment is broken, bottles are smashed, much beer is spat, spilt ‘n swallowed… and after 2 encores The Rip Offs finally depart having well and truly destroyed Madrid. It was a total blast. So, yeah, go on then… Legendary!
