Jyager

UK hip hop usually gets lumped into two boxes by those not in the know. The first is the box labelled “crap” and everything gets chucked in there by people who’d rather support the likes of Bishop Lamont and D12. The second is labelled “Roots Manuva” because that’s the only other UK rapper anyone ever seems to bother with.

But what lurks behind the peripheral of these people, what sits in the hip hop Matrix, is that extra special box. This box is labelled “dope” and in it contains gems from the likes of Jehst and Smurf and Asaviour. Take a look just outside of the box and there’s a track itching to be heard, so let’s start the process by clicking the link above and getting it going.

Cee-Why’s body-shaking beat on comes in like the crazy aliens in War Of The Worlds, making your spine shiver, your fingernails dig into your palms and your eyes widen. It ain’t organ-sucking E.T.s coming for you though, it’s the sound of some ridiculous MCs – newcomer Jyager [pronounced Yay-Ger] shows himself to be able to stand up to the guests on the track – Smurf, Micall Parknsun, Joker Starr and Kyza. Only YNR head honcho Jehst stands above him, but hey, who ever gets the better of Billy Brimstone?

By now you’ll be well into the track and I can predict what you’re going to do next. You’re gonna pick up the track and place it in that box labelled “dope”. Welcome Neo, this is the shit son.

Bonded By Blood Interview

Thrash Metal was revived in 2008 with the ‘Thrashing Like A Maniac’ European tour taking the headlines.

Bonded By Blood joined Gama Bomb and Sworn Amongst for this Thrash off and came out of it with their heads held high.

Alex Gosman met singer Aladdin at the London show to find out a little about what makes them tick.

So, I gather from your name that you’re big Exodus fans, then? How did you first discover Exodus and thrash metal in general?

Exodus was one of the first Thrash bands I had ever listened to. It was by mistake really. I was in a Crossover band at the time. Some guy had a CD played that looked like mine i turned it on expecting to listen to some D.R.I and I ended up listening to Exodus it was love at first listen. I was in Middle school at the time so was around 13 yrs of age. That was my introduction to thrash I’m sure the rest of the band has their own stories.

Your album out on Earache is called ‘Feed The Beast’ – any story behind the title?

The cover portrays it all. It’s all one big metaphor. The beast is the city that takes you in and spits you back out and you as a human instead of helping society out you keep feeding it.

Is there a good thrash scene in Pomona/California in general? And have you ever crossed the border to play some shows in Mexico? If so, what was that like?

Pomona has never really had a great thrash or metal scene in general. Pomona had a good punk scene when i was growing up here. If you wanted to hear some thrash bands you had to get in your car drive 30 minutes west out of Pomona to LA backyard shows. California now has a real good thrash scene with really good bands in it. We have never had the pleasure to go south of the border. One day soon we will.

What inspires you lyrically? And do you think that we, as the human race, are ultimately doomed?

Lyrically Its mostly all about human experiences. Shit you go through on a daily life. I honestly do believe we are doomed and no one is doing anything about it.

Is Carlos surname really Cerveza?! And what is BBB’s favourite alcoholic beverage of choice?

Haha no Carlos surname is Regalado. They just call him that cus hes always drinking. There are 2 fave drinks, when we are in the mood to get fucked up fast it’s Bacardi 151, when its beer drinking its Mexican beer Corona.

What makes you all happy? And what pisses you off?

Skateboarding makes me happy. Some people in the human race piss me off.

What are your plans for the near future as a band?

Tour Tour Tour and tour some more. Write new songs for the 2nd album and that’s about it.

Dan Leech interview

Interview: BDF
Photos: Matt Clarke

We hear that you’re the newest addition to the Karma Skateboards team, so how did that come about and what happened with Icon?

I think the Icon brand had run its course and they decided that they wanted to concentrate on their other companies so made the decision to put Icon to rest.

It’s a shame but it’s a business at the end of the day and if its not making money then its fair enough I guess. I spent a few years with them and I appreciate all the support they gave me but unfortunately it doesn’t always last.

I’m still good mates with Smedley and the guys from Rollersnakes so there’s no hard feelings. I’d skated a few demos for i-five because they sort me out with Silver trucks and me and you both know Adam (Karma/I-Five Distribution Owner) and get on well with him so it seemed like a pretty natural move. Plus I’ve known Pete (King) for years so I’m stoked on how it turned out.

That was a pretty quick cross over, how long was there in between the two? (laughing) About an hour wasn’t it?

(laughing) It was a bit longer than that but there’s no point hanging about. Adam had asked me a while ago if it riding for Karma would be something I might be interested in sometime in the future but at the time nothing came of it so when Icon finished, I called him to see if the offer was still open. Thankfully it was and I’m stoked to be riding for them now…

You’d been filming for a few different projects though right? Tell us a bit about that. Whats happening to all the footage?

Yeah, I had a fair bit filmed for Toby (Batchelor)’s video but the rest of the people that were going to be in it had other commitments, so for one reason or another the video never really happened. I think a lot of the footage of (John) Tanner and Nicky (Howells) ended up in Savoir Faire and my stuff was going to be an Icon promo with Smedley but that’s not happening now either. (laughs)

So whats happening with it? Is it going towards the Karma video?

Yeah a lot of it is. It was kind of sitting around not doing anything for a while so we were going to put it all out, just to get it out there you know? I had a few pictures that Matt (Clarke) and Chris (Johnson) had taken so we were going to run it all together with the footage but then the Icon thing happened so we decided to put a bit of the footage out as a teaser and the rest will go into the Karma video which should be out sometime soon. It works out well all round really. I’m definitely looking forward to doing some more filming and getting some new footage, I find it easier when you’ve got a deadline and a target to work towards as opposed to just filming for the sake of it y’know?

Stoked. One more thing: what was with the orange on all your Icon stuff (laughs) Are you going to be aiming to get any Karma graphics in “ginger” or what?

Cheers for that mate, yeah I’m over that now for sure (laughs) I’m gonna pick a new colour and we’ll take it from there…

SkreinTax

On the back of their previous single Breathe, SkreinTax – the combined forces of Skrein and Dr Syntax – are back with the title track from their album Scene Stealers and a B-Side featuring rapper and why-wasn’t-he-nominated-for-a-Bafta Adulthood star Plan B.

Scene Stealers, which you can hear by clicking the player above, sees the two rappers ride of a beat by Foreign Beggar Dag Nabbit with choice cuts from DJ IQ. The duo pound the listener with punchline after punchline showing off their respective skills on the mic and give a perfect example of what to expect from the rest of the album [which is out now!].

The aforementioned B-Side, Last Dayz is a non album track, so it’s well worth picking up. Y’know to support UK hip hop n’that.
