The enjoi team headed down under for a shred and came back with footage from Jerry Hsu, Louie Barletta, Ben Raemers, Cairo Foster, Dane Burman, Jake Hayes and Anthony Mapstone. This lot certainly put the ‘C’ into the C-word.
There have been quite a few new shoe moves this week but none more significant as this. HUF have been quietly going about their way to build a solid team of rippers and have now strengthened their squad with the addition of both Dylan Rieder and Austyn Gillette this week.
Look out for these two alongside the full team in the UK this August if plans come to fruition as part of their European tour.

‘Secret Surprise’

Sometimes a track comes along and just smacks you right in the face. ‘Secret Surprise’ from Cardiff/London outfit Joanna Gruesome does just that. It’s the first cut from their forthcoming album Weird Sister which will be coming out through the excellent Fortuna Pop! label (Allo Darlin’, Evans The Death, Shrag) on September 16th – if this track is representative of the rest of their debut then colour us very excited indeed.
Like The Pixies gone punk, ‘Secret Surprise’ is a supercharged, lo-fi burst of pure energy. The Buzzcocks meets C86 meets Riot Grrrl sound permeating through could easily sound dated, but there’s something fresh (maybe even timeless) that makes their scuzzy, fuzzy sound extremely exciting.
It’s the kind of track that you can imagine making teenagers want to pick up the guitar and give it a go themselves, which is exactly the sort of ethic a band like Joanna Gruesome instil. JoGru, as well as the bands they regularly shares stages with such as Playlounge, Bird Skulls and Best Friends, bring an energy which is at odds with many new bands filling the dive venues of East London. There’s no feeling that these guys do it with any ambition of filling phone network sponsored venues or getting their mugs on the front of any weekly music mags. As trite and clichéd as it may sound, it’s clearly about the music and the fun of playing. It’s just real.
They tour pretty relentlessly so there’s no excuse not to scope them out this summer.

A new clothing company has launched with the UK’s Princess Daffodil, Ben Nordberg joining as the first sponsored team rider. Asphalt Yacht Club, is Stevie Williams’ new label with Stefan Janoski on board alongside a team that has been assembled featuring Justin Figueroa, Derrick Wilson, Riley Hawk, Nyjah Huston and Blake Carpenter.

Welsh skaters are celebrating a new skate park built down in the Cynon Valley area of Aberdare this week by Maverick. The new concrete poured on this land includes a tasty looking combi-bowl, ‘Library’ steps, a taco, a hip, ledges, a gap and more. The park is open weekends only right now until the main contractor finishes the surrounding landscaping. They are and they are hoping to open the entire site up in around 4 weeks time. Look out for an exact date as they come closer to completion.
Speaking to Maverick’s Ian Jennings this week he told us that: “Aberdare has been a dream project from start to finish. We worked very closely with the users to create a design which would not only replace the soon-to-be-demolished ASP1, but open up a new era for the local riders/skaters and allow the skills they’d honed on the old park to evolve and grow in the new one. Within quite a limited budget, we balanced a great combi-bowl with a jumpbox section, an interesting street course, a homage to the long-lost ‘library steps’ and an array of interesting features and transfers in such a way that the whole park flowed, but without too much conflict between the different sections.”
“Thanks to our dedicated crew, the execution of the build has been spot on and the quality of the finish is of the highest standard. Ant Dennis and the locals are a really great bunch. It’s been a real pleasure and an honour to help them realise their dream of delivering a first class park for the area and a fitting memorial tribute to a lost friend. The initial feedback has been over-whelmingly positive and we are stoked to have had the opportunity to put this facility in Aberdare where it is so obviously appreciated and will no doubt be enjoyed for many years to come…”
