Ted Nugent Slams Pantera

70’s guitar legend Ted Nugent has slammed former metal heavyweights Pantera for their apparently “soulless” cover of his signature track ‘Cat Scratch Fever’.

The attack came via a posting on his official message boards in which “Hunky Ted” branded the cover as “too white, with no balls and no soul”. Nugent also caused outrage among the rock and metal communities with comments about slain Pantera guitarist Darrell ‘Dimebag’ Abbott, claiming that he: “never thought too highly of anyone foolish enough to take on the nickname of a life-destroying dope product and promote such family-destroying conduct on stage”.

Abbott was gunned down onstage at an Ohio nightclub in December 2004 by crazed Pantera fan Nathan Gale, who reportedly blamed him for the bands’ 2002 break-up. Gale also murdered 4 others including band and venue staff as well as one fan. Gale had a documented history of mental illness, using a weapon bought for him by his mother as a gift.

Get With The Skate Program

The Godfather of the modern skateboard, Paul Schmitt has donned a white blouse and taken his knowledge of how to build a skateboard to the classroom.

After a good 25 years or more pressing plies and founding Schmitt Stix Manufacturers, as well as Element Skateboards, Paul’s educational course called Create and Skate aims to teach young science students the technical side of skateboard that goes deeper that a pretty graphic.

Over a two week period, the students learn about the ecological, mathematical and scientific principles that eventually lead to them building their own skateboard. If this endeavour proves to be a success, it might go nationwide.

Enjoi – Bag Of Suck

Enjoi are a bit of a loose cannon. You see, Bag of Suck has been anticipated for far too long, and after the numerous team changes (which involved the loss of Marc Johnson and Bobby Puleo!) people were beginning to doubt whether the gang of Merry Pranksters could pull it off. The team took the criticism in their stride and shrugged off any doubt, clouding any footage for this DVD in mystery. Finally a release date was set and respected and the final product is everything you could have wished for and more… Much more.

In regulation orange, the little box with collage of point-and-shoot photo linear notes, the Bag of Suck DVD leads the way for fun on your skateboard. The featured riders- Jerry Hsu, Caswell Berry, Jose Rojo, Louie Barletta, Jason Adams and Clark Hassler– have only ever performed together for the fraternal Tilt Mode videos of the past. Those videos were a damn good breathe of laughing gas in a world dominated by deadly serious filming sessions. The Enjoi video obviously stays in the same vein of skating, but you can tell the guys have grown up a bit and know when to quit the party and get busy. In fact, on more than one occasion this DVD had me gasping at the feats performed.

After some stylish intro credits, Caswell Berry opens the show to the beats of Dead Prez ‘Hip-Hop’– a very good choice and banging tune I might add! Caswell is a bit of a gnarler, and when you see what he had to suffer to get some of his tricks down in the bonus sections, you’ll understand why Caswell can’t be slept on. Unless he’s drunk and demanding a haircut…

Jason Adams rolls up next and manages to pull a wicked part with hardly any ollies. You might ask how this is possible, but when you see how far and innovative Jason can take wallrides, you’ll suddenly feel like a new chapter of skating has been opened before you.

Next up is the sweetest bit of park skating I have seen in a while. Never before has synchronized skating looked so good. If the Enjoi squad had to enter the Olympics, a performance like this is definitely worth gold. I must also praise the filmer or whoever conceptualized this segment.

The first time I saw Jose Rojo was in a Tilt Mode video, and I remember Marc Johnson expressing undeniable talent in the kid thus giving him the premier amateur status on the team. Jose is a smooth operator who can cruise around any terrain in style. Jose recently suffered a bad car accident, but hopefully this hasn’t shaken his nerves because buttery skating like this is golden.

Clark Hassler is a bit of a tweaker. He might blurt random rubbish and gurn under pressure, but this kid has got some sweet tricks- notably on ledges. Clark doesn’t go all out to technify each trick, but he adds just the right amount of spice to have you rewinding his section to get a proper grasp at how difficult a few of his tricks are.

You can’t get the Enjoi team on screen without their mates clocking some footy too. The friends sections runs smoothly with a wide variety of talent featured, in fact (and I know other reviews have picked up on this too) keep an eye out for Dave ‘D3 Millionaire’ Mayhew who skates across the screen and proves the D3 debacle hasn’t robbed him of skills.

Ah! Louie Barletta… They say that one man’s madness is simply misunderstood genius, and Louie on his board demonstrates this to the tee. This wild eyed mascot to the team has got the skills to pay the bills as well as the positive attitude to enjoy each and every minute on his skateboard. Some people might look at Louie as a joke, but I honestly don’t think 90% of the pros out there could touch this guy or what he can do on a board. Hats off to the Mad hatter of skateboarding, this section is by far one of the most creative skateboarding parts ever as Barletta kills the most awkward spots with precision. If this part was on any other video it would be the grand finale but the star of the show and on everyone’s lips for this DVD has gone to another man on the team.

Finally the curtains drop, and it’s Jerry Hsu that sees us off with a two song part of ridiculous skating. From a very young age Jerry has demonstrated silly control and style that only a few would be able to emulate. I think Jerry has kept all of his footage for this part under lock and key because there are some serious bangers in here, plus to fill a two song segment you’ve got to be a busy bee. Gaps, rails, ledges, banks… Jerry can hold it down and hit up spots like no one else right now. This part will go down in history and maybe earn him the SOTY I the States, only time will tell, but you have to see this DVD, not for one man alone, but for a team effort.

So, there you have it- the much anticipated Enjoi DVD. The way in which the team pokes fun at skating, but primarily themselves, can leave onlookers perplexed as to where they are heading in the greater scheme of things, but this Bag of Suck is confirmation that the Enjoi team are not to be mocked. You have gathered that the skating is right up there, but don’t let me forget to tell you about the many bonuses and great soundtrack. In fact, I won’t. You need to get down to your SOS and grab a copy ASAP!

Nebula/The Sword – Live

Black Moses
Dingwalls – Camden
14.06.06

It’s Sunday night and a few hours ago I was out of my brains until 8am on the backfoot of a wedding that went into extra time! My brain is like a squashed orange under the wheels of a 4×4 in the street and how I find myself at Dingwalls watching one of the worst bands I have ever seen is incredible! They seem to be playing with their amps at 12 (not even 11!) is just simply questionable all round. The band are called Black Moses and quite frankly they suck. The singer sucks, their sound sucks and the soundman should be forced to suck eggs through hosepipes whilst gaffer-taped to a live cow cos this show was way too fucking loud and MY HEAD FUCKING HURTS, YOU TOTAL BASTARD!

OK, lemme calm myself down a bit here, you can tell I was irate about this band, in fact, I found out later that night that it was fronted by Jim Jones from 80’s psychedelic garage outfit Thee Hypnotics who I used to like back in the day, but these days, they are shite. Period. Thankfully with 20 mins between them fucking off, The Sword took to the stage to deliver some real music.

They were laid back and took every song in their stride with ease. They were tight, but they didn’t have beards like you would have pictured once you heard their debut album for the first time. They don’t throw blood everywhere; in fact they don’t even speak much. Texan singer JD Cronise is a man that makes the heaviest music and then relishes in it. Somewhere under that mop of hair, he is having the heaviest time of his life, but none of us can really see it, we can just hear it!

They play through Age of Winters with style and are a tight unit for start to finish, covering classic songs such as the mighty Barael’s Blade, the crushing blows of Freya, the instrumental medieval beauty of Iron Swan, that churns into a raging sea oh so wonderfully, and the instrumental discharge of March of the Lor with all of its stabbing charges. This band has every bit of ground covered, and talking of covers, they ended the show with 2. The first unrecognizable to mine and Sherry’s ears and pretty dull all the same, but then they came out with a stabbing rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” where Cronise sang the words “The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands”….And guess what? They sure did…..

With The Sword taking the bull by the horns and my head now mangled from high grade skunk and Guinness, Nebula came on stage and carried on where the Texans had left off. They love getting wasted but despite the rush of blood to their heads they came up with a tune for everyone. Stoner rock is, I suppose a fad that went down about 10 years ago, I guess the words are still used, as they are perfect. You get stoned, you nod and rock out, and all done in a 70’s way that pleases.

But when vocalist/guitarist Eddie Glass and drummer Ruben Romano founded the group after leaving desert rock pioneers Fu Manchu they knew what they wanted out of life and they got it. I personally prefer the heavier induced rush of bands like The Sword, High on Fire and Mastodon as they are fucking heavy and have an evil side that appeals to my sick, aural demands, whereas Nebula who have been in the forefront of this scene from the beginning have opted for a much more garage based, poppier sound, especially on their new album Apollo. This album is a good record and you should definitely check it out, they played a few new ones and some classics and we got more stoned and almost passed out.

Tonight they delivered a decent show, even though they were as wasted as we were, and that is why I can’t remember any song titles other than the 3 covers of Jumpin’ Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones, I Need Somebody by The Stooges and Suffrajet City by David Bowie! It was a great night, my head exploded and has not been the same since, so well worth the money, but The Sword took the honours tonight as they are the fresh kids on the block with a whole lotta skulls to crack, go find them and fast..

Blind Skateboards – Ronnie Creager

Resin V deck
(Playstation graphics 7.5′)

7.5 is skinny! I’m skinny but I don’t like 7.5’s. You can put the grip on horizontally, but it’s still a skinny 7.5!

Blind seem to have a plethora of ply series out. This one is the Resin V deck. I think the “V” is for vertical…I perused the lil’ cardboard thingy that comes in the wrapping but like almost everything I read, it just bored me and I’m still non the wiser as to how they make them.

I think they have the normal standard top and bottom horizontal ply setup But in the middle there’s a load of thicker vertical ply’s, apparently more than 75! All constructed in the worlds biggest emerging market, the country where if all the citizens where to jump simultaneously, earth would move off it’s axis. A lotta’ people, a lotta’ ply’s.

Anyways it’s a Ronnie Creager! A straight up skateboard legend, one of the rare few who possess the skill on a board to do anything they want and make it look good, I’m sure he could skate a piece of chipboard and still be one of the best skateboarders ever.
