Isaac Hayes, the voice of sex-monster Chef in South Park has sensationally quit the show after he declared that the creators should have respect for religious beliefs. The episode which tipped the balance for Hayes was an attack on Scientology, a religion he shares with the likes of Tom Cruise, and though he didn’t explicitly state this as the reason, it is widely believed to be the case.
Over the years South Park has pushed boundaries and has lampooned all religions, from Christianity to Islam and yet Hayes has never previously spoken out against the show. The deep voiced singer’s exit will leave a hole in the character list of the show but no decision has been made as to whether he will be killed off or re-voiced.
