Crossbones Ramp footage with Cab & Lance 1988

There’s nothing like ending this week with some skateboard heritage with some archived Powell footage. Lance Mountain and Steve Caballero are filmed sessioning the Crossbones Ramp in 1988, a golden year for many as skateboarding had reached pretty much every city around the world with Powell Peralta’s infamous movies doing damage wherever they were played.

Amazing to see that both of these guys are still ripping. Enjoy this.

Watch: Joe Gavin’s ‘Till Tomorrow’

A touching clip emerged earlier this week around the same time the sad news was dropped that legendary Manchester spot Urbis had been shut down by skate-stoppers. Joe Gavin took to the streets of the city he knows inside out with Eddie Belvedere, Chris Barret, Andy Scott and Tony Da Silva and put together this SHRED clip for Snake Eyes.

Shot in stark black and white its timely blogging is more than enough inspiration for you to get out there and make the most of things while you can and while they’re there. Watch below.

Element Wentworth Jacket

This Fall/Holiday season Element have unveiled a series of warm and sleekly clothing dubbed The Wolfeboro Collection which when considered phonetically carries in itself a sense of warmth and sensibility to it. Go on, just say it: ‘Wolfeboro’… you want to wrap the sounds around you right? Well, as it turns out the clothes featured in this collection are just as inviting.

The Wentworth subtly draws attention thanks to its well-fitted shape and simple design. It’s 100% cotton shell comes exclusively in simple colourways: black, chocolate brown and a more natural beige/brown. Pictured right is the chocolate brown colourway which has been painted on my chest frequently in the nippy weather we’re having. The branding isn’t at all heavy, just a simple leather appliqué style tree icon badge below the shoulder. The button front pockets are deep and comfy for your greasy mitts with enough room for that perpetually necessary bag of crisps, or whatever you want that’s around the same size as a bag of crisps.  It should be noted that the interior lining comes in a 100% cotton red/black plaid pattern and is staggeringly dope. A unique selling point for sure.

It should not be regarded as the armour of choice when braving the Mother Nature’s Winter roster of absolute arseholes, wind and rain being the key perps behind our discomfort. But with its high neck it puts off that inevitable scarf purchase a little longer and is perfect light jacket material to take to gigs and save you some money at the cloakroom; it’s water repellent too… rad! It’s on a seriously smart/casual tip too which, unless you’re Danny from Cradle of Filth, is probably right up your strasse.

éS Bobby Worrest ‘First Blood’ shoe review

Back in July when we re-launched this mag we had the pleasure of trying out a limited edition version of the First Blood signature shoe from éS rider and Beast from the East, Bobby Worrest and we were not disappointed. Well actually that’s a lie, we were actually gutted that éS had not released the leather version of these in plain black once their collab with graf artist Cycle had passed as they are one hell of a skate shoe and in leather they are as slick looking as Ice-T and his mates on the front of the Power sleeve.

After searching the web for simple black versions I found these black, red and gum sole versions in suede and they were that good that I ordered two pairs. Sometimes if you love a shoe that much and think that it suits your needs it’s always worth investing for the future as they do become harder to find as time ticks on.

Worrest’s kicks come in various other colours and are full of the usual goodness like the System G2 malarkey in the heel and that griptape sucking, vulcanized sole that was just made for skateboarding. It’s the most simple skate shoe ever made and on par with the Etnies Faction- no fancy shit, comfortable as hell with a thin padded tongue with a beer inspired logo fitted with those elastic tongue-centering straps that hold your entire life together. What more do you want from a skate shoe? Everyone has their own styles but for me I need look no further.

Rambo was the last surviving member of his unit in First Blood, the movie that I guess inspired the name of these kicks and with that in mind I believe it’s worth fighting everyone in your path to get a pair of these before they become ‘last year’s collection’.

Newsoul Skateboards – You Got Soul

When Jean-Marc Soulet and Abbe Nyberg (pictured together right) started the Swedish skateboard brand Newsoul Skateboards last year, I’m sure neither of them anticipated the irrefutably and phenomenally viral nature of their straight-to-online debut video feature ‘You Got Soul’. It’s unlikely for anyone tuned into the skateweb to have not stumbled across the flourishing entrepreneur and esteemed shralper, Abbe Nyberg, his name written in the blue text that makes that arrow of your mouse turn into a little pointy finger. Behold the power of the digital age; more names are being linked than ever but it makes the truly talented almost impossible to miss.

Should you have clicked your finger on Abbe Nyberg’s name, chances are you would have been directed to his section from You Got Soul which racked over 200,000 views in just a few days. That’s the kind of rapid video success stories reserved exclusively for Kanye West and videos of cats doing adorable shit. To see someone whose name isn’t exactly most excitable youtubers’ go-to search and someone whose style and trick selection is unique to the point of being vilified by the same, it was wonderful to see the well deserved universal love rise above the usual forgettable fog that clouds up the internet.

Be sure to not group the rest of the video in with that fog. It deserves just as much blue text linkage as the young Nyberg’s properly breakthrough part. Abbe’s business partner Jean-Marc Soulet takes the opening section and I wouldn’t be too surprised if his superbly baggy bottoms have a practical purpose of concealing his bionic legs because the concept of human legs achieving such awkward and brilliant ledge combinations and flips out of manual is something I’m unable to fathom. Though well executed simple tricks have been something of a constant trend since Jamie Thomas welcomed us all to hell, it’s awesome that the head-rubbing tricks that I can’t even name are just as encouraged in 2010 as they were in the early 90s. Soulet starts as Nyberg will later carry on, be prepared to scratch your noggin a lot with this one.

After a brief segment set to awaken memories of how frustrating it is making a skate video , Filip Almqvist is quick to remind us how rewarding they are when they’re finished. Almqvist boasts an accomplished style that both summons and rises above the aforementioned well executed simple trick trend, often tailsliding that extra foot of two before getting that compulsory flip out. Erik Nylander shares his song and is a fresh blood who is running down the path to blowing yo’ mind in the future. Watch out for this kid. Just try not to be jealous by how disgustingly potential-ridden he is. Skating with the likes of Jean-Marc, Filip, Abbe and friends can only be fun, constantly motivational and inspiring; such is the vibe of this entire 15 minute video.

The calm before the storm comes in the form of something that’s always been a personal favourite feature in skate videos, the collection of goofy footage. Rather than save these for the often-skipped credits, here we see the stuff that really makes going out skating fun set to a tune reminiscent of the similar in between section snacks that cut up Flip Sorry. Then it’s up to Abbe Nyberg to close the video and we all know what happened there. If you don’t, then join in on the viral fun and tell all your friends because the reason why this section has been posted everywhere is for a genuine reason. It’s not because he does stupid backflips down stair sets, it’s not because he does tricks without looking, it’s not even because he has an awesome elmo jumper, it’s because he’s a straight-up amazing skateboarder. Like, properly holy shit amazing.

But let us not forget the big picture here, Newsoul as a collective are exactly what they claim to be: an honest skateboard company whose focus is to bring together people through a mutual love of skateboarding, having fun and apparently cool elmo jumper. From the plethora of youtube comments alone it seems that they’ve achieved exactly that despite only being in business for a year. They’re already receiving emails from those wishing to buy their products from outside Sweden so say what you want about videos going straight online… if you’ve got a message to put across then there’s nothing stopping you from getting it out there now. If it’s as good as this, people will not only pay attention, but talk about it. Lots.

Survey: Gurnell Leisure Centre Skatepark

For over a year, Ealing resident Piers Leigh has been campaigning for a skatepark to be built in the Ealing area. The original idea was for the park to be built in Elthorne Park but after some awkward political movements and a successful campaign against Piers the location had to be changed.

Currently, the park is planned to be built within grounds of Gurnell Leisure Centre. It is essential that 11-18 year olds of the West London area have a local skatepark so please click on the picture below to fill in a short and simple survey that won’t take longer than a couple of minutes. For more information on the consultation, follow this link.
