Malaria – Safari Clothing

If skateboarding is an illness, I don’t want to see a doctor. Luc Kampfen and his homies at Safari Clothing know just how infectious it can get, and Malaria is proof. You probably recognize Luc as Guy’s brother, and with that in mind you’re probably thinking about old issues of Puzzle video magazine and a few too many noseslide nollie heelflip variations, right?

Well, you’re right that they are brothers, and you’re right in remembering Puzzle because Malaria watches like a high school reunion of some of Puzzle’s finest alumni, but you’re wrong to pigeon hole these Swiss street technicians as being obsessed with noseslide nollie heelflips. There isn’t one in the whole video!

There are a whole lot of shit-hot ledge combos though. There’s some street tranny and a long list of manuals to get excited about too. If you’re a rag-doll who loves nothing more than a double-sets and rails in the double figures, then you’re vaccinated against malaria. The same goes for anyone with a boner for backyard pools and brews with the barnies. So, malaria caters solely for those who like to skate street and see it pushed forward by some fine-tuned technicians.

Just watch as Sebastien Hepp slides bigspin frontside bluntslides in lines, or Sven Kilchemann imitate Tupac Shafurr (Shakur with an accent!) for life as he balances long frontside nollie heelflip nosemanuals and blasts switch 360 flips down lots of stairs. It isn’t all street stee-lo though, there’s Daryl Hefti blasting sweet switch ollies off bumps, Stefan Bircher skating so smoothly both ways, and Luc Kampfen sticking something ridiculous into an empty pool. No spoilers, sorry.

I think the video MVP is a toss up though between OG street wizard, Guy Kampfen, and the ender, Christian Zemp. Guy has kept up the technical front and employs many a trick with smooth sophistication. Apart from abusing one variation of the noseslide, I never really understood why he gets hated on? Can you bust out a backside 180 fakie nosegrind switch bigspin heelflip on a ledge?

Or maybe, an 11 trick line with nothing but above average ledge and flatground tricks? Nah, didn’t think so. As for Christian, he skates everything, and fast. Intricate lines, the longest and smoothest switch crooked grinds this side of the Alps, and a Daewon-esque assault on various manual pads will definitely get you stoked on the Zemp.

Add to all this street precision an audio soundtrack ranging from the White Stripes to Ertha Kitt, a good selection of bonus material including a trip to the States back at the turn of the century, and Malaga getting served something sweet. This skate strain of Malaria is pretty infectious and can cause immediate adrenalin rushes resulting in getting out your door and trying to see how tech and smooth you can skate it in the streets.

World without hoes?

Whilst the skate world hates and debates about the blank board dilemma, Hubba asked the REAL question everyone wants to know:

What it be like, a world without hoes…?

World’s largest truck..?

I’ve got to hand it to Bradley Rosado for this find.

Apparently, Scott Archer from Baltimore made this massive axle with his bare hands. Some say it looks like an Indy from a distance..?

Thrasher in Oz

Globe and Thrasher Magazine invited skateboarding to take it’s balls out of it’s fanny pack and put shit down last weekend on Australia.

On the cards were a Tizzey at Pizzey Park concrete bowl, some mini madness and a the Varsity double set (6 flat 7!) challenge.

No need to deny the fact that dudes got hurt, but you soon forget the pain when you see Chris Haslam man-handle the mini ramp, Matt Mumford and Omar Hassan tie for first place at Pizzey, and Adam Dyet knock out a switch backside heelflip at the Varsity Double-set.

Oooof!!!

Lakai fully prepared..?

With rumours running rife about delayed release dates, and multiple DVD options, I thought I’d contact Lakai‘s number one representative this side of the globe, Mathieu Tourneur, to get the official low-down on Fully Flared. Here’s what he had to say:

Nah mate, don’t believe the Hype… or do?

Well, yeah, Ty (Evans) did actually clock in with a hour and a half long rough edit. We are thinking SkyOne… Murdoch is funding the extra expenses for the last skate trip on the moon!… Due to the important training these guys have to go through, we’ve pushing the deadline to somewhere around 2009….

Sorry.

Don’t hold your breath…

Fresh Blood – Pt 4

5th March 2007

This weeks Freshblood burst onto the scene only a year or so ago, and they don’t show any hesitation when it comes to complete annihilation.

The usual route for a career in skateboarding would be to build up your confidence and gain recognition gradually, but these three skaters wasted no time in getting noticed and serving up a severe warning to lagging pros. Jerome Campbell, Ante and David Gonzalez are no joke on their boards.

I think together, this trio can establish the lead in new Super-Ams category. Who needs a board with your name on it, if your name is already on everyone’s tongue?

Feature by Zac Slack and Ralph LD.

Jerome Campbell – Blueprint

Portrait ph. Neil Chester

If you’re scanning Great Britain for talent, then you’ve probably spotted Jerome Campbell, not once, nor twice but three times. You can’t really miss it when a kid rolls past you with such smooth manoeuvres.

Jerome was first spotted in Matt Hirst’s video killing all his local spots with ease. It only took a minute for Blueprint to take the teenager under their wing and before you knew it Jerome was touring Europe and the UK dishing out many a lesson in style and power.

When the Sheffield Story Store posted a daily clip of Jerome frontside nosesliding over the L-bench, people took notice. Do you have any idea how hard that is? And Jerome did it asleep at the wheel…

Full Name: – Jerome Campbell
Age: 19
Sponsors: Blueprint Skateboards, Nike SB, Thunder Trucks, Krew and The Story Store
Hometown: Sheffield
How long been skating: 6 years.
Favourite tricks: “Just learnt airwalks and 900’s”
Favourite kind of spots: “Anything really, odd stuff, quirky stuff!”

You know when you move into a house with someone you don’t know very well, then find out about all their little quirks? Well in the past year I have discovered that Jerome:

A) Spends much of his time acquiring new possessions and then instantly lose them by leaving them at a spot.
B) May try and borrow money from you, even though he has a wad of notes in his sock draw.
C) Thinks that there are 500 real people in the world and everyone else is a prop.

This is the part where I tell you how much Jerome skates with the speed, style and thought of a veteran beyond his years.Neil Chester, Blueprint Team manager/Filmer

Antonio ‘Ante’ Aiello – Yama

Portrait ph. Machine Braudisch

Brought up in a town called Hard and sharing an uncanny resemblance with evil Sideshow Bob, Ante fella has burst onto the European skate scene with some explosive tricks in Antiz’ Z-Movie, and a few eye openers in various European magazines.

You see, Ante rides for Yama and Yama are nomads of the skate world. They just skate wherever life puts them and usually leave devastation wherever they roam. Ante has taken the confidence and determination of misled youth and applied it to his skateboarding to produce some of the cleanest and gnarliest skating of the moment.

We know Ante is destined to make it big on his board, so he’s a direct candidate for Freshblood.

Full Name: Antonio Aiello
Age: 18
Sponsors: YAMA Skateboards, Emerica.
Hometown: Hard, Austria
How long been skating: Since summer 2000
Favourite tricks: Olli, Kick Flip, cruising in the streets
Favourite kind of spots: I try to skate everything

Without skateboarding I would probably be one of the guys, who spend their time with felony and thefts. Before I started skating, I was hanging out with the wrong kids, but skateboarding kept me out of that way of life and showed me a lot of beautiful things like travelling and many new friendships. I want to thank Alex Kramer, the whole Yama Crew, Oli Bürgin (soletech), my family and all my friends.” Ante himself.

Watch Ante serve out a solid beating to some of Europe’s biggest spots in the Yama section of Z-Movie here .

David Gonzalez- Flip

Portrait ph. Daniel Sturt

When the industry is awash with young rippers each as good as the next, it takes whole lot more to differentiate yourself from the bunch. Flip skateboards run a tight ship when it comes to hooking riders up, so when they announced their support for little David Gonzalez from Columbia, a few people might have had doubts as to what their reasons might be.

Flip didn’t have to explain a thing – David did the talking. Or should I say screaming? Honestly, this kid has got a thirst for thrills that an unhealthy dose of energy drinks couldn’t induce.

To quote a UK skate magazine editor that got the chance to witness David’s skating first hand: “Unbelievable is a word I’ve used too often in this article already, but it’s the only thing that comes close“. Howard Cooke’s Everton gap first try, then again with a little layback powerslide for speed control on the approach..? Nuff said.

Full Name: David Gonzalez
Age: 16
Sponsors: Flip, Globe, Ricta, Fury, CCS Mailorder, Libre skateshop.
Hometown: Medellin, Columbia
How long been skating: 11 Years
Favourite tricks: I haven’t seen one he doesn’t like.
Favourite kind of spots: Anywhere his wheels can roll.

On a highway to hell with no fear in his blood, David Gonzalez hails from Medellin Colombia, at the tender age of 16 he has lived more than most, and with a story to tell for every occasion that will shock or leave you in fits of laughter. If you ever get to witness him skate live then you’ll understand why I didn’t bother writing any bullshit about how he can do this and that and he rips on this and that terrain, actions speak louder than words and David Gonzalez is really fucking loud.” – Ewan Bowman

Dartford Skatepark goes live…

Could it be the fastest delivery of a concrete park we have seen in the UK from scratch yet?

The locals at Dartford certainly seem to think so when they saw their brand new concrete creation opened by UK heads this weekend in Kent.

Marc Churchill may be recovering from a car accident but before he was forced to get his feet up, he and his team over at Gravity made sure that Dartford now have a decent skatepark that will certainly be on the travel list once the weather picks up again.

The weather played its part in trying to disrupt the opening ceremy and by the time the officials had finished their long winded speeches, the session kicked off with Heroin Skateboards’ Chris Ault being first to transfer the hips and Greg Nowik (pictured) showing his flying credentials. as usual.

Well done to Dave and all the locals down there for showing other communities that if you take time out to get the right people involved from day one, you will end up with a park that will be skated for years. If only London skateparks could follow suit and erect somewhere new to skate so quickly from plans, everything seems to take an age here.

Rumours that Cantellowes will be open for April much the same as the new London Bridge covered park are still floating about alongside the fact that Bay 66 will get a new streetcourse. This is of course the most ABD subject on offer in West London right now but the good news is that the design has been locked down thanks to swift work from various heads and the UKSA and that discussions are now taking place about the build which is expected to be completed before May.
