New Beastie Boys book in the works

beastieboys

It looks like Mike D and Ad-Rock are to tell the Beastie Boys story in a new book that is said to be in the works for 2015. Spiegel & Grau, an imprint of Random House will be publishing their memoirs edited by hip-hop journalist Sacha Jenkins.

It is said that the book was underway before the unfortunate death of soul-mate MCA aka Adam Yauch last May but the remaining members have reignited their interest now in completing it.

New DC Hardcore book ‘Hard Art, D.C. 1979’

A brand new book covering Washington DC’s infamous hardcore punk scene will be released this June. “Hard Art, D.C. 1979” has been put together by Lucian Perkins who spent 27 years of his life taking photographs for The Washington Post.

His iconic snaps of Minor Threat, Bad Brains and beyond whilst he was an intern there proceeded a career that earned him not one but two Pulitzer Prize’s for his sterling work shooting various wars and conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and much more.

You can pre-order this on through Dischord so you know it is legit for a decent price of $23. It will be a far better choice than the rip off project that the Vinyl Factory are selling to hipsters this month. Make sure you do your homework.

‘Beehive Queen’
Hate Hate Hate Records

thewytches_beehivequeenBrighton garage rock hounds The Wytches have returned with a brand new single this week scheduled for release on Hate Hate Hate Records. ‘Beehive Queen‘ is another slice of psyche goodness from the three piece that comes with a White Stripes-esque production courtesy of producer Liam Watson at Toe Rag studios, who brings their previously grungey sound on debut single Digsaw into more classic 60’s territory with a trademark nuggets sound.

This release comes with a AA-side track titled ‘Crying Clown’ and will be out on limited 7″ vinyl (only 300 printed) and via digital download on June 3rd. Look out for them on the road.

Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath
‘God Is Dead’

www.blacksabbath.com

It took 35 years for Black Sabbath to write and release a new track and here it is, an 8:51 minute heavy metal journey for 2013.

God Is Dead‘ is the first piece of music released last night from their new album ’13’, Black Sabbath’s first studio LP with Ozzy Osbourne since 1978. The question is though, is this any good?

The song was produced by legendary producer Rick Rubin, famous for his work with the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Slayer and plenty more. It was said that he asked the band to deliver something for him to work with that would be up there with the first 4 Sabbath albums. On reflection, ‘God Is Dead’ has taken elements of those classic breakdowns we all know so well; the graveyard production and those trademark Iommi heavy riffs and even Ozzy’s voice sounds like he just about gets away with it, although some will argue that he clearly has nothing left to give due to the effects on this recording. For me, the end section of this track is where it all comes together. Seven minutes in, Sabbath are absolutely flying, Ozzy is on point and you are shipped back to 1970 where it all began.

You have to give it up to them on actually making this record. We are talking about 60 year old men here. Most old codgers can’t even make it to the john in time, let alone write and record a nineteenth album. The Stooges made a complete mess of their comeback record this month; in comparison, this track kicks its arse.

The chances of this song going down in rock history like classics such as ‘War Pigs’, ‘Iron Man’ or ‘Paranoid’ though is slim. ‘God Is Dead’ lacks any of the songwriting skills needed to be logged in the Sabbath hall of fame and lyrically it’s about as entertaining as the news of Rolf Harris being arrested this morning. The fact that the band have left drummer Bill Ward out of the band for this whilst he is fully active in Orange County and added Audioslave’s Brad Wilk adds more mental torture ahead of the release of 13, but have a listen and make your own opinions.

Overall, this tells us that metal’s darkest lords could have have some good stuff up their wizard sleeves and with the positive force from Nietzsche here on their cover, maybe their new album scheduled for release on June 11th will pull off a miracle we never thought would ever happen.

10 bands to see at Groezrock 2013

One of the best festivals to kick off the season with, Groezrock in Belgium, is looming on the horizon and we couldn’t be more excited! As ever, there are a plethora of classic hardcore and punk bands on the bill, alongside some of the hottest new punk and metal talent from across the globe. Aside from the cherry beer, cava delights and hopefully some stellar weather, we are looking forward to seeing the following sure-to-be-damn-fine music over the weekend in Meerhout. Winegums brings you her Top 10 to look out for.

ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT

Well won’t this just be one massive party of a set? We can’t wait to rock out with Speedo et al in the most apt of surroundings.

BAD RELIGION

Fresh off the back of the release of highly lauded new album ‘True North’, kings of punk BR will be bringing their signature brilliance to the stage and we have no doubt that everyone will be rapt.

THE ATARIS

Undoubtedly one of the guiltier pleasures on this rundown, The Ataris will none the less provide some excellent nostalgic fare.

TEXAS IS THE REASON

We’re not sure it’s possible to be any more excited about a set. Having checked out frontman Garrett’s spine-tingling acoustic set at the festival last year, we are rippling with anticipation.

BRING ME THE HORIZON

Always good for a raucous rock and roll time, BMTH’s new sound / line-up / whatever will merely serve the purpose of propelling the band to an astoundingly brilliant performance as per bloody usual.

WHILE SHE SLEEPS

Metallic Sheffield upstarts WSS will be bringing their heavy onslaught to the Belgian field and there’s no doubt they’ll be bringing it hard. If ever there were ones to watch.

COMEBACK KID

On an anniversary turn that will see them play Turn It Around in its entirety with original vocalist Scott Wade, you can bet a bit of ‘You said, you said, you said…’ will get a look in too.

KID DYNAMITE

Punk rock at its finest, Kid Dynamite’s set is sure to be a continual barrage of stage diving madness, in the finest Groezrock tradition.

POLAR BEAR CLUB

Endearing new punks provide a welcome addition to the line-up and the opportunity for many a heartfelt fist in the air.

GEOFF RICKLY

Thursday frontman turned acoustic troubadour, Rickley will no doubt be pulling out the classics, but we’re also expecting to hear something a bit different in the way of new material and perhaps the odd cover or two. Well worth checking out.

Oh and there’s this too. How could we forget?!
