Marvin The Martian Live

Old Blue Last
31.07.06

Picture the scene – An upstairs room full of trendy people. I’m talking about the Vice reading, stupid hair-cut wearing, tight trouser brigade. What the hell are they doing at a show for a grime MC? The answer is I have no idea. But regardless, we plonked ourselves right at the front of the stage whilst half of the trendy lot chatted away with their backs to the stage, and Marv The Marsh hit the stage.

Marv, a small fella, hopped on the stage with his giant hype man Jack Nimble [of Marv’s WhyLout? Crew] and immediately placed his props on the stage, the most prominent of which was an old phone that kept ringing throughout the set so he could link tracks with conversations to various people. It’s original and it works, big points for that.

The bass pounded immediately with Around The Way, the track that infamously samples a motorbike and my head was thrust back and forth by the sheer weight of the bassline, but I wasn’t complaining, it would’ve been rocking regardless. The sample led Reymell was another great part of the set, the guitars pumping out as the little and large team bopped around the stage rapping hard to be heard over the sound. And with lyrics about smacking your little brother for jacking your SNES, you know you’re in for a treat.

Stay Off The Kane, a track which apparently makes Marv the maestro of “Grindie” [ignore this, we don’t want to discredit the guy] comes along with another prop – this time an umbrella as Marv marches along Dick Van Dyke style around the stage and the biggest track that he has penned yet, I Don’t Go Alone brought the show to a great close. One minute the song makes him hang his head and shake his head, the next minute the MC is pumping his chest and blasting the verses out.

Zap Zap! The martian came from South London and he blew it up at the pub full of trendies. He keeps going on like that and he’s gonna be my new hero!

“I’ve been chasing Gogol Bordello since Christmas to do Bestival and finally bribed and cajoled them to move recording commitments. We are really, really pleased they are headlining the Friday night. They’re easily the most exciting live band I’ve seen in 2006 and if you haven’t seen them yet you won’t be disappointed. Gypsy punk, Eastern European ska, New York bombastic breaks, weird haircuts and sexy ladies with washboards strapped to their backs!”

Pink Floyd Reunion?

Apparently, Pink Floyd members are considering coming back together in a tribute to the late Syd Barrett. Though David Gilmour has said many times that he has never wanted to reform the group, a source in a newspaper has claimed the band members are more likely to do it now in a celebration of Barrett’s life.

There are no further details about this, but if ever there was a chance of a reunion, it seems a lot more likely now than ever before.

More G’N’R Problems

Guns N Roses are never far from the headlines and once again Axl Rose was at the centre of the problems. Their set at Wembley Arena on Sunday didn’t start until 10.30pm and near the end of the set, Rose promptly left the stage and didn’t come back.

The band were booed and slow hand clapped before finally appearing on stage and when Rose left it was up to Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach to fill in for him on Night Train and a repeat performance of Paradise City.

The band’s manager Merck Mercuriadis came on stage after the gig and read a statement to the crowd that Rose had either hypertension or high blood pressure.

Biggie Murder Case Re-Opens

Once again Biggie‘s family are stepping up their efforts against LA over the police’s allegedly corrupt handling of the case. Reports are that the LAPD had given up on the rapper’s murder but now there is a lawsuit heading their way, they’ve announced that 6 detectives will lead a task force into new investigations.

The LA Times newspaper states that there is no new evidence on the case, so it can be argued that the re-investigation is political more than anything.

The team are thought to be checking out the rumours that Biggie’s death was down to a rap feud, and that he was murdered by the Crips, at the request of Suge Knight, something Knight has always denied.
