Joy Division film wins at Cannes

The Ian Curtis biopic has won a host of prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, including Best European Film.

Control, about the Joy Division singer who committed suicide at the peak of the band’s powers in 1980, was shown outside the main Palme d’Or competition but was a winner in the Director’s Fortnight section.

The Europa Cinemas said of the film: “This is a very impressive and assured debut from a renowned photographer, but he never allows the look of the film, beautiful though it is, to detract from the powerful story and character development.”

Cream to reunite?

Jack Bruce has said Cream will reunite this summer for one, or possibly more, shows.

The bassist was at the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp in Abbey Road along with Bill Wyman and Deep Purple’s Jon Lord when he said:

“It came up we’re doing something if I wanted to. Obviously, I’m not going to be the one to say no.”

Cream had reunited two years ago for the first time in almost 40 years but releations between Bruce and Baker were reported to be strained. So far neither Clapton nor Baker have confirmed or denied the reunion.

Nekromantix

In case you couldn’t tell from the title, there’s a dark sense of humour present on ‘Life Is A Grave…‘ that has long been the Nekromantix trademark.

This is the Danish psychobilly trio’s seventh full-length record, and whilst the subject matter remains largely the same (i.e. romance, death, or both), the quality of the music is more than enough to explain why the Nekromantix are regarded by many as psychobilly royalty.

There’s plenty of prime wrecking pit fodder on offer in the likes of ‘Voodoo Shop Hop‘ and ‘B.E.A.S.T.‘, with lead vocalist/upright bassist Kim Nekroman hollering and twanging away like a demon on speed. He’s not afraid to slow things down from time to time, though; as best witnessed on the sultry slices of lounge-a-billy that are Horny In A Hearse‘ and ‘My Girl‘. There’s even a cheekily-titled instrumental (‘Panic At The Morgue‘) and the great tunes and tongue-in-cheek lyrics remain present throughout.

Check out ‘Nekro High‘ on the link above; it’d be a grave mistake not to. A ghoulish mistake, even.

I’ll get my coat.
