Pearl and Brass

Hailing from the dusty town of Nazareth in Pennsylvania (now that’s a damn rock sounding town!), Pearls & Brass take the bluesy proto-metal of 60s rockers like Cream, Blue Cheer and Led Zeppelin and then add huge doses of stoner rock fuzz and twisted math rock chaos to the mix.

Only The Fucking Champs come close to creating the kind of bizarre hard rock jams that ‘The Indian Tower‘, from which the track ‘No Stone‘ comes from so it’s hardly a surprise to find out that this album was in fact produced by Fucking Champs legend Tim Green. He’s in damn good company!

Incredible stuff – listen and learn!

Emmanuel

British producer Colin Emmanuel [aka C-Swing] has gotten his big break with help from Lowlife Records, home to Jehst, Rodney P and Skinnyman. His production skills have helped him work with a range of artists from Jamelia to remixes for Nas and eventually allowed him to produce The Beta Band’s Hot Shots 2” album and currently is involved with tours and production for Steve Mason’s King Biscuit Time.

This album is a nice mix of styles, from the rap skills of legend KRS-1 on My Thing!!!, Braintax‘s Let’s Go Away and Mystro‘s Heat to the terrifically catchy Pretend featuring Nate James’ smooth vocals. With other guests appearing such as Terri Walker, Michelle Escoffery and pop writer Daniel DeBourg, Emmanuel is able to put all sorts of different sounds into the pot and still come out with a tasty album. Amazing.

Notorious B.I.G

8 years after his death, The Notorious B.I.G aka Biggie Smalls has a new album out, this time with his previously unheard studio stuff being paired up with a host of guest rappers, some of whom weren’t even out of nappies during his reign on the top of the Rap world.

The standout tracks, purely for who they bring together, must be Hold Ya Head which throws Biggie in alongside Bob Marley, Living In Pain which puts Smalls and 2pac together for the first time in many years and Get Your Grind On, which features a third deceased guest star, Big Pun.

Nothing released after his death is ever going to be as good as what he released whilst he was alive, because he was such a forward thinking artist, who has a flow like no other and who has no-one remotely near his level in the game today. But for anyone who still hankers for that Biggie sound, with new rhymes, then this album allows you to once more slip into his world, and show you just how good he was. Look out for Nasty Girl featuring Diddy, Nelly, Jagged Edge, and Avery Storm released on January 16th and the album The Final Chapter on January 23rd through Bad Boy/Atlantic Records.

Test Icicles

Hearing the music by this widely tipped trio being described as “Spazz Punk” is perhaps the most apt description of an album I’ve ever come across. One minute you’re sitting listening to twanging guitars, the next your ear drums are being shattered by screams that would have banshees cowering in awe.

The music on this album really is all over the place, but that’s definitely not a bad thing. The thumping disco drums and electro breaks keep the foot tapping and the screaming is something that you find yourself wanting to howl along with despite being sat on a packed tube in the morning rush hour. This is hardcore mixed with metal in a fight with pure unudulterated chaos and all coming straight at you from a 3 piece with a drum machine.

Upcoming single What’s Your Damage showcases the band’s unnerving ability to thrash out a screeching song whilst at the same time keeping it catchy, topping it off with a shout-a-long chorus and the inside out guitars will have you dancing about like a wild thing. Believe the hype, if your ears can take it! The single is out on Domino Records on January 16th and the album “For Screening Purposes Only” is out now.

Yellowcard

If you like your Alternative US rock, then Yellowcard are back with a new album as their follow up to 2003’s Ocean Avenue. This debut album back in 2003 seemed to catch on in alternative music circles like free beer in skate jam and it looks as though Lights and Sounds will be no different. The band have taken a different approach to this record this time round and the result is a much bigger, more challenging mix of different styles of music that is all held together by big hooks, catchy songs and overall, more personal.

The band had to cancel a tour due to vocalist Ryan Key having serious throat problems but fans will be happy to know that the llives dates are now scheduled for March and are below. Look out for Lights and Sounds released on January 23rd, the video is on this page for you to watch.

Jaed

Vanessa, the creative force behind Jaed, was raised on a strict diet of Veruca Salt, L7, Hole, the Pixies and the Riot Girl scene, influences which are echoed in her own unique brand of spikey punk pop. Her disarmingly honest and personal lyrics clearly set her apart from her contemporaries.

Laced with a wicked black humour, her songs give an insight into the struggle of a young woman who, at the age of 16, was forced out of home by an abusive father and left to live on the streets of Melbourne with a drug habit to feed. After a long battle with her addiction, Vanessa has now been clean for a year and the first single ‘Gutter Girl‘, taken from the forthcoming album Dirty Days, was written during her time in detox.

Notwithstanding these difficulties, Vanessa remained passionate about her music and even during the darkest days continued to write, busking on the street for change. Her break came when she was caught shoplifting, unbelievably this led to a meeting with a top Australian producer.

The band’s line up is completed by a British rhythm section that is comprised of two childhood friends Matt (drums) and Greg (bass), who grew up playing together and provide a solid, energetic backdrop for Vanessa’s guitar and vocals.

The album Dirty Days is set for a release in 2006.

Louie

Take two lead singers still in their teens, put them into a studio with! four ot! her solid musicians, add some gnarly bass, a healthy dose of angsty yet arrogant attitude and some sleazy punk pop and the result is Louie’s debut single ‘Trees‘.

At barely two minutes long this is a whirlwind. mind-blowing insight into what’s coming our way. Northern frontmen Jordan Smith and Gaz Tomlinson belie their age with their amazing vocal chemistry, bouncing and sparring off each other with their punchy lines.

It’s a high octane flash in the pan, which is just as powerful as anything longer – a wham bam thank you mam, leaving you gasping for breathe, with the ‘la la la’s‘ from the chorus still singing in your head. The lyrics race through the track, their story telling lines supported by spiralling guitars and a heavy, aggressive baseline whipped into a super energetic bomb of a track.

A tour with ex Clash member Mick Jones has cemented Louie’s claim on the pop punk title and already they’re making the mark on the airwaves. This is one band who’ve coupled youthful exuberance, punk aggression and a cocky swagger without sounding same same and this is a track that races through you like a freight train leaving you shellshocked. Watch this space.

Milk Kan

There are 4 people that form this cheeky cockney set up and they seem to be the closest thing to Chas n Dave than anyone else right now! Some people have mentioned Billy Bragg, others have spoken about Mike Skinner from The Streets and they would not be wrong, but I would personally say that Delboy, Rodders and Co from Only Fools and Horses could be revisited just in time for Xmas this year with this monster!

The flip side to this CD single that was released on 5th December features a track called Kill All A&R Men which, once again, will have you in stitches if you have half a sense of humour. I am sure that there is more where this came from so expect to hear more on this site when it arrives as this is the sort of stuff everyone loves to get hammered to and dance like fools until they puke.

Top stuff and just in time for the silly season! More Milk please!

Lamb Of God

With an undying reputation as one of contemporary metal’s most fearsome live acts, heavy-hitting thrash quintet Lamb of God have already achieved the type of mainstream success many once considered unthinkable for a band of such magnitude. Following steady sales figures on the back of debut release ‘New American Gospel’, its Devin Townsend produced follow-up ‘As The Palaces Burn’ would go on to shift well over 100,000 copies, capturing the attention of major label giants Sony.

The deal that followed resulted in 2004’s critically acclaimed ‘Ashes of The Wake‘ which has consequently gone on to sell 300,000 copies in the United States alone. The band has since toured relentlessly, most notably as co-headliners of Ozzfest 2004’s second stage alongside fellow titans Hatebreed and Slipknot.

With a recently gold-certified DVD release in the form of ‘Killadelphia‘ (one of the few metal bands ever to have achieved such a feat) and a new album on the way; 2006 is already a year certain to belong to Virginia’s finest.

Hold on to your hats…

Bucket Of B-Sides

Def Jux have thrown up some of the most influential and memorable hip hop in the past few years, and such is the depth of their talent pool that they have released this album of B-Sides and remixes. Not content with having the likes of El-P, Aesop Rock, Mr Lif and RJD2 doing their thing, they drafted in guest MCs such as Blueprint, MF Doom and Copywrite to bolster their already impressive attack.

Classic songs such as Can Ox’s F-Word and Aes Rock’s Kill ‘Em All both get the RJD2 remix touch taking them to another level, and the new verses on RJ’s own Final Frontier make for incredible listening. Considering the strength of their roster, it’s no surprise these B-Sides are as good as this, but sometimes they go even further than you’d expect.

A bucket full of winners.
