The new Brixton clothing range is about to drop into your local skater owned shop and it’s looking promising as usual. Watch this really well put together Spring 2011 video and then tell me you didn’t watch it again to check out the hottest brunette you have seen in a long time.
3 more parts of the Frankie Hill documentary have been released to the web this weekend featuring Pat Duffy, Lance Conklin and more discussing how influential Hill was to street skating alongside stories from Hill himself.
The documentary is being put together by Nate Sherwood and completely free to watch in its entirety once a new site has been built to host this and more films on the history of skateboarding.
Jeff Grosso was one of the first skaters that I thought was the coolest out there. My brother and I rode all of his Santa Cruz decks as he was a punk who made it grind and had the best rock and roll slides in the game.
He now finds himself on Anti-Hero Skateboards after a stint over at Black Label, he had a rad Old Skool shoe out on Vans last year and is now back discussing Smith Grinds and the history behind the name. Find out why it should have been called the Monty Grind right here talking to Alex Olson and his Dad in parts one and two.
Finally Radiohead fans can hear an offering from the from The King of Limbs album that will be released online tomorrow as Radiohead have posted a video for the ‘Lotus Flower’ single on the web this morning.
Kid A fans will be delighted as Lotus Flower is very much in the same territory and has been performed live before in the last year, watch it here and let us know what you think of it in the comments below.
Isaac Miller, the ripper that is riding Drawing Boards’ wood gets 10 of his best over the driveway in Brighton’s lost world of the Level this week. It still bugs the hell out of us why this skatepark has nto been turned into a world class spot as Brighton has everything going for it. Thankfully it’s not stopping the likes of Isaac from skating to a certain level as he seems to get better and better by the month.
...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead The 5-piece with the best band name in independent music scene, ..And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead may be on their 7th album but in that time they have never once delivered a long player that doesn’t get rinsed in this office.
Most bands curl up and churn out drivel on at least one or two records throughout a career that last this long but Trail of Dead seem to be in a league of their own on every record and have mastered the indie rock scene that was once built by the likes of Sonic Youth and co.
The new album Tao of the Dead storms into gear with new single Summer Of All Dead Souls, today’s track of the day purely because it captures everything that AYWKUBTTOD are about; amazing melodies, heartfelt lyrics, orchestral brilliance and a certain anthemic joy that only comes with Conrad Keely and
Jason Reece’ own brand of guitar led genius.
Look out for the new album, we will review it in full next week. It was recorded in 10 days and is arguably their best recording since their debut back in 2008. Listen to this and scout it out.
The Get Up Kids have been masterminding their comeback over the past couple of years, first releasing an EP to test the waters and then getting out on the road to sate the appetite of their insatiable fans before reaching this point where they’ve released their first full length album in seven years.
‘There Are Rules’ certainly shows a progression since the band were last together and you’d hope so too after so many years have gone by! There’s more experimentation in sound with throbbing electronic basslines and off-kilter melodies, yet TGUK prove that they’re still master songsmiths with a collection of insightful, well considered music.
We spoke to Jim Suptic, guitarist with the band, about expectations, independence and what it’s like to be an influence on others.
Why did you decide to start writing songs together again?
We just felt it was the right thing to do. It just sort of happened.
Did anything in particular inspire you as a whole during the writing process of ‘There are Rules’?
German culture and the music of our childhood.
Is there anything you are really looking forward to with the whole process of releasing this record?
It’s exciting. We hope people really like it. I think it’s our best yet. I am sure it will take a few listens for some people. Some people will hate it. That seems to happen every album.
Can fans expect anything out of the ordinary during this upcoming tour as far as your live performance goes? Do you think you’ll have to adjust your approach at all to convey the new songs in a live setting?
So far the new songs have fit into the set nicely. There isn’t anything too crazy in the new show. We don’t have wardrobe changes or anything like that.
Why the decision to release this new album independently?
We realized that labels are like banks giving loans to bands. We didn’t need a loan. We left Vagrant on good terms though. They were good to us. It was just time to move on.
Do you feel like the music industry has dramatically changed since your band started fifteen years ago? Anything for the better or is it all quite bleak in your opinion?
The record industry is always changing. Every generation thinks the next one’s music looks bleak.
How did the individual members of the band adapt to writing together again after having side projects etc during the hiatus?
It was pretty easy to get back to work. After 15 years you had better have it together or maybe you should look for a different job.
How do you juggle everyday life with the commitments of the band this time round? Have there been developments in everyone’s lives that make it difficult to go full steam ahead on the band front?
I think between all the band members there are 5 other band to deal with. It can be frustrating but we make it work. I have a wife and kid at home so I don’t mind not touring 10 months out of the year. I’m happy with 4 to 5 months.
How do you see the future for The Get Up Kids? Is it too soon to ask about the possibilities surrounding another album after ‘There Are Rules’?
I don’t know why we wouldn’t continue to make music.
You’ve been an influence on a whole host of bands over the years. Are there any bands you’ve heard reference TGUK that you’ve been particularly pleased with influencing?
A lot of bands say we influenced them, I just don’t hear it. I guess it’s a lot nicer than being hated.
The new Get Up Kids album ‘There Are Rules‘ is out now on Quality Hill Records, click here to pick it up.

What a lovely surprise we had this morning when the postman turned up with a box full of Tea-rrific new products from our friends at Lovenskate. Skateboarding’s barmy army have joined forces with Carhartt this month for a series of decks, tees, mugs and tea pots with artwork from Graham Mitchell.
Stu Lovenskate and his brother came up with the concept of making a skateable tea cup and threw a tea party for good measure. The results were nothing but good times of course seen in these photos below.
Look out for them once these new collectables hit their online store and appear in various Carhartt shops soon.
