Newsoul Skateboards – You Got Soul

When Jean-Marc Soulet and Abbe Nyberg (pictured together right) started the Swedish skateboard brand Newsoul Skateboards last year, I’m sure neither of them anticipated the irrefutably and phenomenally viral nature of their straight-to-online debut video feature ‘You Got Soul’. It’s unlikely for anyone tuned into the skateweb to have not stumbled across the flourishing entrepreneur and esteemed shralper, Abbe Nyberg, his name written in the blue text that makes that arrow of your mouse turn into a little pointy finger. Behold the power of the digital age; more names are being linked than ever but it makes the truly talented almost impossible to miss.

Should you have clicked your finger on Abbe Nyberg’s name, chances are you would have been directed to his section from You Got Soul which racked over 200,000 views in just a few days. That’s the kind of rapid video success stories reserved exclusively for Kanye West and videos of cats doing adorable shit. To see someone whose name isn’t exactly most excitable youtubers’ go-to search and someone whose style and trick selection is unique to the point of being vilified by the same, it was wonderful to see the well deserved universal love rise above the usual forgettable fog that clouds up the internet.

Be sure to not group the rest of the video in with that fog. It deserves just as much blue text linkage as the young Nyberg’s properly breakthrough part. Abbe’s business partner Jean-Marc Soulet takes the opening section and I wouldn’t be too surprised if his superbly baggy bottoms have a practical purpose of concealing his bionic legs because the concept of human legs achieving such awkward and brilliant ledge combinations and flips out of manual is something I’m unable to fathom. Though well executed simple tricks have been something of a constant trend since Jamie Thomas welcomed us all to hell, it’s awesome that the head-rubbing tricks that I can’t even name are just as encouraged in 2010 as they were in the early 90s. Soulet starts as Nyberg will later carry on, be prepared to scratch your noggin a lot with this one.

After a brief segment set to awaken memories of how frustrating it is making a skate video , Filip Almqvist is quick to remind us how rewarding they are when they’re finished. Almqvist boasts an accomplished style that both summons and rises above the aforementioned well executed simple trick trend, often tailsliding that extra foot of two before getting that compulsory flip out. Erik Nylander shares his song and is a fresh blood who is running down the path to blowing yo’ mind in the future. Watch out for this kid. Just try not to be jealous by how disgustingly potential-ridden he is. Skating with the likes of Jean-Marc, Filip, Abbe and friends can only be fun, constantly motivational and inspiring; such is the vibe of this entire 15 minute video.

The calm before the storm comes in the form of something that’s always been a personal favourite feature in skate videos, the collection of goofy footage. Rather than save these for the often-skipped credits, here we see the stuff that really makes going out skating fun set to a tune reminiscent of the similar in between section snacks that cut up Flip Sorry. Then it’s up to Abbe Nyberg to close the video and we all know what happened there. If you don’t, then join in on the viral fun and tell all your friends because the reason why this section has been posted everywhere is for a genuine reason. It’s not because he does stupid backflips down stair sets, it’s not because he does tricks without looking, it’s not even because he has an awesome elmo jumper, it’s because he’s a straight-up amazing skateboarder. Like, properly holy shit amazing.

But let us not forget the big picture here, Newsoul as a collective are exactly what they claim to be: an honest skateboard company whose focus is to bring together people through a mutual love of skateboarding, having fun and apparently cool elmo jumper. From the plethora of youtube comments alone it seems that they’ve achieved exactly that despite only being in business for a year. They’re already receiving emails from those wishing to buy their products from outside Sweden so say what you want about videos going straight online… if you’ve got a message to put across then there’s nothing stopping you from getting it out there now. If it’s as good as this, people will not only pay attention, but talk about it. Lots.

Survey: Gurnell Leisure Centre Skatepark

For over a year, Ealing resident Piers Leigh has been campaigning for a skatepark to be built in the Ealing area. The original idea was for the park to be built in Elthorne Park but after some awkward political movements and a successful campaign against Piers the location had to be changed.

Currently, the park is planned to be built within grounds of Gurnell Leisure Centre. It is essential that 11-18 year olds of the West London area have a local skatepark so please click on the picture below to fill in a short and simple survey that won’t take longer than a couple of minutes. For more information on the consultation, follow this link.

Ali Boulala Interview

Ali Boulala returned to the global circuit, touring with friends and making welcome appearances again this year in a manner some would lazily apply to that of a ‘changed man’. In reality, as anyone who popped along to Wholesome last week to check out KR3W’s new footwear range would have noticed, Ali is the same lovable, eccentric, warm, impeccably dressed and instantly friendly human he always has been… he just as a new ring on his finger.

It helps that he’s around such good friends and has excellent support from his sponsors KR3W and Flip. Lizard King had only met Ali for a few days before making one of his infamous impulse purchases and buying Ali a new iPhone after his old one suffered a mysterious fate at the bottom of his wife, Amanda’s bag. When you consider that footballers have the tendency to be absolute gits to one another, it’s no surprise to see a team gel so well not just with each other, but everyone who offered a hand out to be shook. This is something that barely exists outside of skateboarding.

It was an enormous pleasure to catch five minutes with Ali to talk about his physical recovery and when he expects to be back on the board. And he will be, there’s no doubt about that.

Ali and Amanda Portrait: Stanley
B/W Photography: Shad Lambert

So the last we heard about your physical condition you were waiting for an operation to sort out the calcium deposits in your hip… what’s the news on the operation?

I’m still waiting for my operation, as soon as…

Intermission: Understandably, Ali is getting a lot of attention from the fashion expert heads lurking around Wholesome. Just as the interview gets started, Ali is approached by a gentleman fascinated by his unsurprisingly eye-catching footwear. He inquires as to whether his shoes were purchased in France and Ali isn’t hesitant to correct his misjudgement, informing him that they were in fact a present from his friend Braydon in America, or specifically Vegas, as he likes to pretend he’s from. This unprecendented interruption takes the interview on a brief detour away from the revelation we want to hear onto a discussion about shoes… given that this was a footwear line launch I suppose this was to be expected. Ali returns to the microphone after the winklepicker connoiseur buggers off…

The KR3W shoes look similar to what you’re wearing actually… that’s some sophisticated shit right there…

Yeah! I know. I really like the shoes they have on show upstairs. I can’t wait to get some.

Back to the operation, what’s the situation?

Yeah, I’m still waiting. But Geoff said that he’s going to pay for it, either as a wedding present or something. As soon as this tour is over I’m going to have the operation done privately. Obviously they’ll be some physiotherapy but hopefully by summer I’ll be doing some tricks and not just rolling around!

Where will you be living – are you staying in Sweden for the recovery process and then going on tours or are you thinking about moving?

I don’t know really, I think about moving all the time! Haha. Like, even now we’re in London and I’ve already said “yeah, we should just stay here” I’d say this to Amanda, “come on we’re already here let’s just not go back”. But then we have not much money and blah blah blah London but then we move back to Sweden and it’s exactly the same!

It would be great to have you back in the UK… what’s the best memory you have of living here?

I remember back when I was 16 and in Liverpool, that was fun. We were just kids going out skating in the freezing cold … which thinking about it probably wasn’t the best memory at all! Haha. Then I lived in Brighton, I don’t know how long for but it was fun. Not much skating happened but it was fun. And London is just London. Being here is great.

So how’s life changed since you’ve actually got married? Congratulations by the way!

Haha, not much actually. But I have this ring on my finger (Ali shows me his ring) and that’s it!

How’s this tour been so far?

Really good. It’s so much fun to be going around with all my friends again, and meeting Lizard King… he is hilarious.

That photo of him ollieing over you at Bercy made it pretty evident that you two got on really well.

Yeah he’s so funny. Before I even met him I kind of knew… I had this picture in my head of what he’d be like and it was exactly right. In Hamburg, when the tour started I met him for the first time and it felt like I’d already known him for years.

Is there anyone else you’ve met on this tour?

Maybe Horsey… I probably saw him around when living in London though.

Didn’t Horsey get lost in Birmingham? Did Lizard chase him away?

Haha! That was the rumour…

So how about your skating… now that you’re not in the dark about the operation anymore when do you hope that you’ll be on the board again?

I want to go back on as soon as possible man. As soon as this tour is over I can get the operation done privately through Geoff and I can get recovering properly. Since I’ve come back to Sweden I’ve just been waiting for seven months.

Will you be back 100%? The way you approach skating has always seemed to be very demanding for the body… will you carry on in such a way or will there be a little change maybe?

I don’t know, see the doctors don’t really know about skating but they have said that my leg will be 100% back of its full ability so to me that means I can probably skate exactly like I did before.

Do you have anywhere specific you want to go once you’re healthy?

No where specific, anywhere would be fine, I’m excited to go anywhere so long as I can skate again. Even flatground, it doesn’t matter where it is.

It must be torture for you now waiting…

I haven’t skated since the accident in 2007. I can just about stand on the board and maybe roll but nothing else… that’s it, I can’t even ollie because of my hip.

Did you keep up to date with what everyone else was doing in skating?

Yeah, I was sent magazines, Thrasher, some Swedish magazines and Amanda would bring in some magazines every now and again… every time they’d be more new names of people I had no idea existed. There’s been so many videos.

Everything is going straight online now…

Yeah that’s it… there’s been so many videos. I haven’t really seen any of the new ones. I’m so behind.

Flip have stayed with you, KR3W have welcomed you back and so many of us out there can’t wait to see you skate again. Have you had any interest from any other companies now that you’ve started travelling again?

Nothing that I know about. Flip were there, then KR3W brought me back on after I got out of prison but other than that I don’t know. Obviously I have to think of how I can make some money again so I can live! It’s good that KR3W are making shoes!

Could you see yourself skating in those? They’re a bit off-the-board style for most I’m sure…

I could! I could definitely skate those shoes! No one is really on KR3W Shoes or anything, it’s still just KR3W. It’s a really great thing to be a part of.

Well the music is starting to get going properly now so we better let you get back to the launch… Thanks for your time Ali, we hope the operation goes well and you’re back on the board soon!

(Ali makes a typically stylish and nonchalant wave of ‘no problem’ and is swiftly joined by Amanda who jovially rouses him out of the swish leather chair hair and whisks him upstairs back into the night.)

Introducing: The Wonder Years

The Wonder Years have been making waves in the underground music scene with their upbeat pop-punk for a while but, having signed with Hopeless Records this year (who launched the careers of Avenged Sevenfold and All Time Low) and just being announced as the opening band on the Kerrang! Relentless Energy Tour next year, the Philadelphians look set to take things to the next level as they look towards their third album. Second album ‘The Upsides’ got a proper UK release the other week with a bunch of bonus material, following the original release of the album earlier this year on No Sleep Records. We caught up with singer Soupy to talk about the band’s experiences of the UK, what music makes him happy and how things are looking for the band in general. We also spoke to guitarist Matt about skate stuff after Soupy had his turn…

For a relatively new band, you’ve already been to the UK several times. How did each experience differ and how difficult / easy did you find it to make your own way over here?

With every experience things got easier. We lost less money, we rode in better vans and we slept more comfortable places and I chalk a lot of that up to meeting friends in the UK and having them help make our tours there possible.

You probably know a lot more about UK pop-punk than many people who actually live here. Which specific acts would you recommend and why?

All or Nothing are currently writing the best songs of their career and have added Paul (ex-Chaos Days) to the mix which should add a whole new dynamic. Basement are killing it on all fronts and just signed with Run for Cover records in the US. Save Your Breath are working on a new album now and  play a really energetic live show and Maycomb round out the softer side of the scene.

Hostels and Brothels is about some of your UK experiences, right? Were there any specific stories behind it?

It mostly centers around a wild party in Leeds that left one house and a lot of egos destroyed.

What’s the best thing about the band signing with Hopeless Records this year?

We get to work with an entire team of dedicated, hard-working people who care as much about the band as we do.

Why did you decide to spruce up ‘The Upsides’ for a re-release?

We wanted to give fans more. We were planning on doing another 7″ in 2010 but with the rerelease, that wasn’t possible, so just added more content toy he record.

How about your next album? Have you started writing or thinking about its release yet?

We have. The serious writing starts next month but we’re excited about where it’s going.

Do you think you’ll be continuing the positive theme or perhaps concentrating on another specific idea? Any plans to do anything wildly different musically?

I think the theme and music will be a natural evolution from Upsides. I have some ideas but nothing I’m ready to share yet and we’ve written some music but who knows what will make the record at this point.

When will you be in the UK next?

We’ll be over in February opening the Kerrang! tour with Good Charlotte, Four Year Strong and Framing Hanley.

How do you stay positive when life starts getting a bit shitty?

You accept that not everything is going to go your way, you appreciate the things that do and you work towards changing the things that don’t.

What albums make you super happy when you listen to them? Why do you think that is?

The Get Up Kids- Something to Write Home About. It’s my all time favorite record and has so many memories attached to it. When it comes on, I have to smile and sing.

When you go on tour, do you take your skateboard?

Yes I do.

Do you have time to skate much?

Not a lot. Generally, I only skate when we play at a skatepark. There isn’t much time to go find spots otherwise.

Where’s the best place you’ve skated, away from home?

My favorite spot would have to be this outdoor park in Denver. It was absolutely the smoothest park I’ve ever ridden. The transitions are all perfect and it’s got a great layout for hitting lines.

Where would you love to go skating?

There’s a new skatepark in Venice Beach that I’d love to skate. Hopefully I get a chance to when we’re in LA doing our new record.

Who’s your favourite skater?

I haven’t kept up with it much recently but Andy Macdonald was always my favorite. Dude is so consistent. Rules.
