King Biscuit Time

KING BISCUIT TIME’s politically-charged anthem CIAM15 released last autumn heralded the start of a new chapter for ex-Beta Band front man Steve Mason. Embracing a myriad of musical styles and influences – dance hall, hip hop, psychedelia, electronica – it gave a taste of where Mason was headed in the new millennium.

Now, in post-Beta-world, things have got weird again and Mason is back with a new single Kwangchow, released on April 24th. Here, amidst the spacey prettiness and sublime grooves of Kwangchow, Mason tells a plaintive tale of “melting metal hearts” in a never-ending quest for love.

Kwangchow is available on cd and 7″ from April 24th on No Style, Mason’s independent label in collaboration with Alan McGee. Both formats feature an additional track, Tears Dry – unavailable elsewhere – with the cd also featuring two mixes of Kwangchow, the Primal Scream-esque Doctors Of Love mix, all piano, bongos, riffs and shakers and the stripped down, hypnotic beats of the Suicide Dogz mix.

Live from Antarctica – Heroin Skateboards

Whilst one too many companies are chasing the buck with glossy ads, picture perfect team riders and technical gimmicks, Heroin Skateboards are looking for kicks with the highest quality goods they can get there fiendish hands on. Mark ‘Fos’ Foster has been at the helm of his brainchild for a few years now, and he has steered his dream through spills and thrills that have seen the team go international, a partnership with a porn producer and guest graphics for other major skate companies. I don’t know if the boss will let me say it, but Heroin is good!

So, I receive a pretty box with funny pictures on the cover (James Jarvis) and even better images inside- the Live From Antarctica DVD is a two hour treat (including bonuses) featuring Fos of course, Nick Worthington, Howard Cooke, Arthur Tubb, Chris Pulman, Rogie, Louie Jones, and the Osaka Daggers- Hamaji, Tomago and Chopper. This video is a eclectic mix of stylers that skate, roll and bounce to some sweet guitar riffs that many punks, rockers and mods would recognize. For those who dare to walk on the Darker side of the moon, Bro rider and in-house videographer, Alan Glass, has prepared a beautiful Necrophile remix of the video in a hidden place…

I don’t really want to run down everybodies section with a who, what, where, when, why, because that would undermine the task of making you lot go out and buy this great DVD, but I will mention a few things that mademe smile and slip out the door for a skate just that little bit faster than usual. Firstly, Howard Cooke is a beast who leaps chasms that only a madman with a glass eye might deem do-able.

Then there is Arthur Tubb who has the gift of skating simply but beautifully. Threading together lines at the most local of spots as well as getting his tourist thing on with some sweet bangers. I really do like Arthur. The Osaka Daggers are always a treat with their balls to the wall-ride-slide out approach to life. I am almost certain you will witness these funky Japanese guys pull a trick or two that you’ve never seen or thought possible before.

Overall, LFA is that breathe of fresh air the skate DVD market needs because Fos and Co. work hard but it looks like they are genuinely having fun on their boards- A rare sight these days. New spots, new tricks, old spots and old tricks, this DVD has them all and more. In fact, if anyone dared visit Antarctica on a skate mission, Heroin would probably clock some sort of footy be it a wallride on an iceberg, or a nosebonk on a penguin.

Death To Goths?

A team of researchers from Glasgow University have found that Goths are more likely to self harm or commit suicide than other youth groups. They described Goth as a dark and sinister subgenre of Punk and studied over 1,200 people and though other groups were seen to self harm, it was the Goths that were found to be most likely to do it.

Head of the research team Robert Young said that it didn’t show being Goth causes this instability, in fact he found it to be the reverse, that being unstable causes one to become a Goth, due to the finding that more self harm happened before, not after, becoming a Goth.

Still, if they must insist on listening to The Murderdolls

Jim Phillips Spreads His Ink

Before the tricks, before the pros and before the endless media, the first thing to impress a kid in a skateshop is the graphics. No single graphic did it for us more than the ‘Screaming Hand’ by fabled artist Jim Phillips.

Skate artists aren’t spared when it comes to trends, so Jim’s talents were brushed off as a new wave of illustrations (or lack of during the awful blank board period) spread across the shelves and Hip-Hop cool bumped the wild times of blood, guts and gore. Oh well…

However, after a good few years, Jim Phillips is back and so are his hair-raising graphics at Pockpistol Skateboards. Pocket Pistol caters for the more roots variety of skater and with Jim’s graphics on-board, you know the goods are good!

Jason Jessee Cruzin’ again

Santa Cruz Skateboards and Jason Jessee have joined forces again as skateboarding’s favourite misfit has signed up with the SCS Veteran Division.

His latest pro model, “The Rape of Liberty” is a winner that reflects Jason’s unorthodox ethos.

Between skating and working on his killer motorbikes, Jason is currently battling it out to get the rights to his auto-biographical movie Pray For Me (www.jasonjesseemovie.com).

New Marseille Bowl

You know everybody loves the Marseille Bowl, well things just got for the French Riviera with this new skatepark/bowl in Apt of the Vaucluse region. Those hard working dudes at Syndrom Skateboards, Skatenova and the USSR Coop just sent news of this spot that they found and transformed for good use.

In a previous life, this spot was an already skateable ditch thing, but now it has coping, ledges and a strange cheese formation that doubles as an interesting wallride/ledge jobby. USSR and Sydrome work together to push the local scene and get things done. Their riders are a good mix of ATV and tech skaters, but then what do you expect when you have parks like this on your doorstep?
