PE’Z

With a slinky combination of ska, jazz and salsa, Pe’z are not your bog-standard every day band.

Formed in Tokyo by mainman Ohyama Wataru in 1999, the five-piece have since garnered legendary status in their Japanese homeland thanks to their energetic and unpredictable live performances. The band have played every major festival possible in the region, as well as headline shows in front of audiences beyond the 3000 mark, and have even made a collaborative TV appearance with Cyndi Lauper.

With 2005’s ‘Tsu Ku Shi N Bow’ receiving its long-awaited UK release, chances are that whether you like it or not, Pe’z will have you skanking your legs off in 2006.

John Kastner Release New Album

John Kastner has done a lot, from film scores, recorded and toured with his band [All Systems Go] and written songs for the likes of Mark Lanegan and Evan Dando, but now he gets a chance to showcase his talent under his own name as he releases a solo record, Have You Seen Lucky, which is due out on June 26th.

Kastner has been through the major label dealings but has decided on his solo stuff to take a different route. He’s using his experience and moulding his releases himself, distributing them first hand all over the world, so make sure you do yourself a favour and check this out!

Varsity Drag News

Ben Deily, who was a founding member of The Lemonheads before splitting with Evan Dando, is back with a new musical project. Varsity Drag will release For Crying Out Loud on June 26th, which will feature nine songs showcasing the fact he’s not lost the ability to write some diamonds.

Deily has said that Varsity Drag came about thanks to stalkers! A band named Unbalanced got in touch with him over the internet, got him to one of their gigs and eventually got him on stage, and then into the studio, Varsity Drag is the result. With a back story like that, you can’t really afford to ignore them!

Mudhoney Live

Scientists, Comets On Fire
London Shepherd’s Bush Empire
11.05.06

If you want your mind blown, Comets On Fire are the band for the job. Their freaked-out psychedelic abrasive noise is enough to make your skull crack. Easy listening this is not. If you want background music, go elsewhere. Comets On Fire travel the same uneven musical path as past free-form rockers like the MC5, Pink Floyd, Blue Cheer, Hawkwind and The Stooges and fill every inch of the venue with swirling, soaring guitar, rolling drums and bass and harsh, howling vocals. Anyone for some brown acid?

Scientists are genuine Australian punk legends. Formed in 1978 by James Baker and singer-guitarist Kim Salmon, they’re back again to show us exactly how this rock n’roll shit should be done with a dirty, boozy bluesy whiskey soaked set that is as harsh as Kim’s gravel shredded vocals, yet swings harder than your mumma. Or something.

The last time I saw Mudhoney live was at ATP’s ‘Don’t Look Back’ series of concerts last year. Mudhoney were asked to perform their classic guitar-scorched ‘Superfuzz Big Muff’ album in it’s entirety. Something lacked in their performance that night; to witness Mudhoney playing this material at their peak in the late eighties was one of the best rock n’roll gigs you could ever hope to see. Our memories are scorched with drunken nights and hair, limbs and guitars flying in all directions. Mudhoney gigs were largely chaotic affairs always teetering on the edge of complete disorder. The Mudhoney or recent years is a far more mature, though no less brilliant musical beast. So to see them play their old material as more sedate, older men was strange.

Tonight however, Mudhoney kick off with a frantic blast through ‘Suck You Dry’ and the whole place kicks off like it’s 1989, the dancefloor turning into one giant, lurching moshpit as the audience lunge around the floor. It soon becomes clear that the band are on fine form tonight and crank out a set that effortlessly mixes new material with old classics like ‘Touch Me I’m Sick’ and ‘Sweet Young Thing’. Finishing off with a glorious romp through ‘In And Out Of Grace’ that sees guitarists Mark Arm and Steve Turner playing the last part of the song laying on the backs wiggling their feet in the air, tonight Mudhoney prove that there’s still plenty of life left in them yet!

Ted Nugent Slams Pantera

70’s guitar legend Ted Nugent has slammed former metal heavyweights Pantera for their apparently “soulless” cover of his signature track ‘Cat Scratch Fever’.

The attack came via a posting on his official message boards in which “Hunky Ted” branded the cover as “too white, with no balls and no soul”. Nugent also caused outrage among the rock and metal communities with comments about slain Pantera guitarist Darrell ‘Dimebag’ Abbott, claiming that he: “never thought too highly of anyone foolish enough to take on the nickname of a life-destroying dope product and promote such family-destroying conduct on stage”.

Abbott was gunned down onstage at an Ohio nightclub in December 2004 by crazed Pantera fan Nathan Gale, who reportedly blamed him for the bands’ 2002 break-up. Gale also murdered 4 others including band and venue staff as well as one fan. Gale had a documented history of mental illness, using a weapon bought for him by his mother as a gift.

Get With The Skate Program

The Godfather of the modern skateboard, Paul Schmitt has donned a white blouse and taken his knowledge of how to build a skateboard to the classroom.

After a good 25 years or more pressing plies and founding Schmitt Stix Manufacturers, as well as Element Skateboards, Paul’s educational course called Create and Skate aims to teach young science students the technical side of skateboard that goes deeper that a pretty graphic.

Over a two week period, the students learn about the ecological, mathematical and scientific principles that eventually lead to them building their own skateboard. If this endeavour proves to be a success, it might go nationwide.
