Aeon And Out..?

It would seem the premiere Euro skate shoe company Aeon Footwear is shutting shop in a bid to concentrate on skateboard manufacturing..? If this disaster strikes, that’ll leave a lot of foreign heavy hitters floating on the shoe market.

However, in light of the crashing market a new French board company, Metropolitan Skateboards is about to hit the streets. Headed up by skater/filmer/ badman David Couliau, Chloe Bernard and David Dupas, these goods should be aimed at a higher aesthetic than other French companies.

Finally, seeing as we’re in Euro land, Belgium has given birth to two new things:

A magazine- POP, and a pro model for national scandal meister David Martelleur on Yama Skateboards .

Lyon Getting A Skatepark?

Things are all a bit up in the air at the moment concerning Lyon getting a second free skatepark. Despite being home to France’s strongest skate scene and several skateshops, and two of Europe’s most notable skate companies (Cliché and Antiz), the town just can’t seem to get it together for a new concrete park to be built on the Rhone river bankside smack bang in the middle of town (below the graffiti ledges/miniramp for those who know…).

Apparently Jeremie Daclin is in heavy talks with the local politicians, and sketchs of a plaza with lovely connecting bowls are floating around somewhere… Note to Jeremie and Lyon officials – Look at Stoke and Prissick!

Es – Accel Plus

I have to admit that I received these shoes seond hand- But that actually works in their favour as you will soon find out… The Es Accel Plus is a jazzed up version of the classic Es Accel being in that extra flair was added with an ankle strap. Why an ankle strap on a lo-top shoe, I don’t know but it definitely makes for a steady shoe on your foot and that beats broken and twisted ankles any day!

So, like I mentioned at the start, these shoes were passed on to me by a friend who had barely skated them, plus he’s the opposite stance to me (Goofy) so it all works in my advantage. I owned a pair of Accels in the past and knew they were a staple for good skate shoes, but the Accel Plus is that level higher of fresh-o-meter. Firstly, the material Es have used a synthetic suede, is bloody grippy and tough. No slippery leather of grazed suede here. When the material does wear through, it reveals a weird fluffy white coat which does stand out on a pair of black shoes, but remains nonetheless resistant to a good scrape.

Another sweet feature to the Accel Plus is the gum sole. You just can’t go wrong with a gum sole on your griptape. Look how many companies are ripping the ‘vulcanised’ gum grip at the moment! The sole does wear away gradually, and the grip fades, but that’s only after a good solid few months of skating. Any sole that maintains it’s function of connecting you and your board for a few months or more is a good sole.

Finally, we’ll finish on the ‘plus’ factor of this shoe, the ankle strap. Like I said earlier, it definitely secures your foot like a seatbelt and doesn’t dig into the top of your foot because of the padded tongue. However, the stitching last about a week before it starts to rub away and the cut material starts to flap about in the wind- This rates pretty low on the fresh-o-meter. I just fixed it up with some shoe-goo, but I can imagine some people will straight cut those things out if they look like that.

All in all, the Es Accel Plus is a top skate shoe. It’s simple and functional. I know Es have been getting a bad rep for making footwear oddities that try and look tech but end up looking like badly tuned blobs. Then there’s the argument that Es are trying to disguise every shoe as an Accel, but I don’t see the problem in this at all. The Accel blueprint is one of skateboarding’s finest and most copied shoe of all time. I’m still skating mine, and if I get a chance to ride some more (especially with this synthetic material!) I will without hesitation.

Placebo

With their fifth studio album ‘Meds‘ still riding high in the charts worldwide, Placebo are back with the second single from what looks to be their most successful album to date. One thing is for sure – they’ve come a long way baby. Brian Molko’s songwriting has audibly grown and matured, and their new single ‘Infra Red’ is the perfect showcase for this fresh sound.

Dimitri Tikovoi is back in the producing seat, and has stripping away the effects and paraphernalia, revealing again the solid foundations to Placebo. ‘Infra Red’ curls its way around you with softer understated verses swept up by delirious choruses, with crunching guitar and attack. Lyrically the track is as dark and paranoid as ever, Molko’s unique vocals are unnervingly menacing “someone call the ambulance there’s gonna be an accident, I’m coming up on infra-red, there is no running that can hide you…” – but at the same time so sweetly seductive with rapturous guitar highs.

With an album bursting with potential singles, ‘Infra Red’ is another exciting release from a band who are simply going from strength to strength, growing with every release. Out now.

TV On The Radio

Are you sitting there just waiting for something fresh to explode in your ears right now? Bored of the same of rubbish that mags like the NME keep going on about week after week? Well, I don’t read their mag but I guess they are all over this like a rash as TV On The Radio are back with a brand new album and I can tell you it’s an incredible experience from start to finish.

Unique sounds are hard to find but this 5 piece have found a sound that sits between heaven and hell and right on the edge. But before you start thinking it’s heavy metal, read on, as this is some of the best scenic indie rock you will find this summer that mixes an incredible production with creative thoughts that you would only really associate with bands such as The Flaming Lips and Fugazi but TV On The Radio sound nothing like either. They have their own sound that could easily soundscape an old 1930’s chain gang film, multitracking vocals, mixing the voices of man and woman to create a beautiful blend of harmonies that your ears are screaming out for.

The track “Hour” is one of the stand out tracks on this epic 11 track album, in fact you can hear it on this very page. It has the same feel to it as some of the newer Dischord artists like Q and not U. In fact there is absolutely no point in mentioning every single track on this album as they all form a jigsaw puzzle that all falls into place as you play the entire record. But look out for forthcoming single Wolf Like Me as it’s a rocking little gem that will encapsulate you.

This band are really difficult to pigeonhole but they are a lot easier to house in your CD collection so go out of your way to get this record as it’s out on July 3rd on 4AD.

MySpace Sued!

MySpace.com is being taken to court by a 14 year old who met a man on the site and was sexually assaulted by him. The lawsuit is pointing at the fact MySpace doesn’t verify its users’ age and alleges the site “fails in its duty to protect minors”.

Ridiculously, it is claimed that its the site’s fault because they are more interested in making money than protecting children. The girl gave the man her mobile number after meeting on the site and then she claims he sexually assaulted her after they met for a film.

Yeah… clearly the website’s fault. The world’s going mad!

The Slackers Interview

New York City sextet The Slackers originally formed in 1991, and have since made a name for themselves as one of the world’s finest traditional ska bands, with records such as ‘The Question’ and ‘Wasted Days’. Having recently released an amazing seventh album, ‘Peculiar’, they toured the UK last month; I spoke to saxophonist David Hillyard shortly before a recent sold-out show at the London Garage.

How’s the tour been going so far?

It’s been going really well, we’ve done about five shows so far, and the crowds have been great…we’re just feeling good to be back over here!

So how long has it been now, since the Slackers first visited the UK?

I’ve been trying to remember – I think it was about six or seven years ago. The first couple of times, we only played one or two shows, but after that we started touring here properly. It really feels like we’ve got some momentum going here now, though, because tonight’s show is sold out, and so were the last two, so it’s going pretty well.

There are a few songs – most notably, ‘Propaganda‘ and ‘International War Criminal’ – that are overtly political; would you say that the Slackers are generally a political band, or are these songs more of a reaction to the current political climate?

We’ve always had political songs, even on our earliest records, although maybe they weren’t always that obvious – we’ve got a reputation of being a band that writes love songs! And that’s cool, because we do, but we’ve always written about a lot of other things too. People we admire, like Curtis Mayfield and Bob Marley, those guys would always address the issues of the day, and what was going on – and we try to do that too. The whole 2-tone movement was very political – you had black and white kids growing up together, being exposed to each other’s culture…almost everything about 2-tone was political.

You write about stuff that affects your life, you know, and right now there’s a lot of people dying, America’s at war, there’s a whole bunch of stuff going on…and if you don’t comment about it, you’re being kinda irresponsible, I think. It’s sad that in the States, a lot of bands are being escapist, and people are into 80’s pop music, which I think was pretty empty for the most part. I guess maybe they want to remember the music from when they were kids, when life seemed so simple!

A lot of ‘Peculiar’ was recorded live – do you usually record that way?

Yeah, most of the instruments were recorded live – it was done two ways: one was at an actual gig, and others – like ‘What Went Wrong’ – were recorded in an empty hall, at soundcheck time. About half the horns were over-dubbed, and the rest were done live – all the instrumental songs were recorded live too.

A couple of years ago, we were in the studio, and we were having trouble getting ‘loose’ – so we decided to take it on the road for a while, when everyone’s reflexes are good and they really know the stuff, and record it whilst playing it live, in an intimate and comfortable setting.

Peculiar‘ seems more immediate and livelier than [previous record] ‘Close My Eyes’ – was that intentional?

Yeah, we wanted to grab you right off the bat – we kinda felt like ‘Close My Eyes’ was a little too low-key, a little too lo-fi at times, so we wanted ‘Peculiar’ to have more of a punch to it; the way the songs were arranged, and the sound of it too. The mastering guy did a really good job – he really took the sound of it to another level.

So what is the ska scene – and live music in general – like in NYC these days? Has it suffered from Giuliani and Bloomberg’s [former and current NYC mayors] efforts to ‘clean up’ the city?

It was down for a while, but now it’s coming around – the good things about this whole 80’s revival is that more young people are forming bands, which is always a positive thing. It wasn’t looking good for a while, because a lot of venues in Manhattan were getting closed down, but eventually a lot of new venues started opening in Brooklyn, to take their place.

So it’s on the rise again, but it’s kinda hamstrung, by all these regulations – the city government’s always finding some new law to make it more difficult to run a club; they’re afraid of nightlife, you know, they just want a really boring city! I just wish all those people would move to Iowa or something, just go somewhere that’s quiet.

What are the Slackers’ plans for the near future, after this tour ends?

We’ve got a California tour planned soon, then we’re going to Mexico for two days in June, then to Japan and other international touring over the summer. Then in August we have our annual boat gig, where we play a couple of sets on boat that takes us around Manhattan Island – it’s become a tradition! We’re probably gonna come back to Europe in September/October time, but we’ll probably only do a couple of UK dates, because we need to tour Germany and more of the mainland.

‘Peculiar’ is out now on Hellcat Records. Check www.theslackers.com for more info.
