Rhymesayers sign distribution deal

Minneapolis’ independent hip hop’s heavyweights, Rhymesayers Entertainment, have signed a distribution deal with Warner Music Group’s Independent Label Group.

The home of Atmosphere, I Self Divine, Brother Ali, Psalm One, Soul Position, MF Doom et al will see the ILG control their catalogue and distribute their albums via Alternative Distribution Alliance.

The first release to come under this deal is Brother Ali’s upcoming album The Undisputed Truth, which is due for release on April 10th.

RSE co-founder Brent “Siddiq” Sayers said of the deal:

“If we have someone who wants to be on a major label, we can, in fact, do that. But if we have someone, like Atmosphere, who does not want to do that, we can keep doing what we’re doing and bring in some select [promotional/marketing] services”.

Brother Ali will be hitting Notting Hill’s YoYo club on April 5th. Be there!

DVS Baron

28.03.07
Not so long ago, I reviewed the DVS Baron as a shoe to chill in and lounge about with after skating. It was good for that.

Then, I came across a predicament where I was wearing my Barons and a session was going off. Naturally I got my skate on, but a little voice kept telling me to hold back a bit because I wasn’t wearing the toughest of skate shoes, and no-one wants to ruin a pretty pair of slippers, do they? That little voice was evidently squashed by the noise of boards slapping on coping and raucous cheers as the skate session thumped harder.

One session led to another and before I knew it, the DVS Barons had become my official skate shoes for the next couple of months. Why I was worried about rubbing a lo-cut pair of flexy sole slippers on abrasive sandpaper didn’t outweigh the fact that the Barons gripped and flipped better than a few armour-plated shoes I’d worn in the past. I suppose the simplicity of the design had something to do with it. A gum sole, rubber outline and canvas and suede upper can be combined to create a fine piece of footwear. No air bubbles meant optimum board feel. No ankle straps meant quicker response to ankle movement. And no pleather upper meant affirmative grip on each ollie.

I won’t lie and say that the Barons are indestructible because that isn’t true. The outline that took the most abuse obviously wore down rather fast, and a couple of shoe goo amendments to the laces had my feet buckled in safely.

However, the overall wear and tear of the underside and upper was pretty minimal considering such a lo-fi design for a shoe. The Baron is a no-nonsense skate shoe that looks good when you don’t skate it, and feels good when you do. Keep that in mind when you go looking for fashion over function and vice-versa.

Anti Hero – Howling Eagle Medium 7.81 x 31.75

” Bus Driver attempts to kill howling Eagle!!! “

I had this beauty for ages before getting the chance to set it up, so long so, that I contemplated building a glass box on top of a tower and locking it in there for all eternity to look at! Obviously I’m not that queer, so I set that fucker up as soon as I got the chance.

The Anti Hero Howling Eagle (medium) soars at 7.81″ and has a wingspan of 31.75″; truly amazing if your swooping into bowls or just flying over massive gaps! The board is stable in a transitioned environment due to its medium fat body and will serve you well when the corner gets tough, but its not much bigger than the crowd favourite (7.75), which means, it holds its ground steadily when it comes to cruising the streets and tearing up them ledges!

The wheelbase is slightly shorter than average, but its perfect for a board of this size. Its not heavily concaved either, which is always a plus in my books, with the nose & tail being almost equal in lift. The shape is definitely the best I’ve had in a very long time and I truly intend to search high and low for something better, but I think it’s going to be a difficult search.

This board has taken a serious beating over the last couple of months, but it’s come up trumps, thus making it even harder to stop sucking its beak!! Besides the normal wear and tear any skateboard endures during its lifespan, this particular board found itself hopelessly trapped in the claws of a man made predator much more powerful than itself, the N31, a fucking London night BUS! Fortunately for me, the wheels of the bus couldn’t grab the eagle properly and spat it out to the side with mere pressure cracks and grip tape cuts being the only injuries sustained. I’m still flying the eagle to this day and am convinced it won’t be over between us for some time to come.

Like I said, this is arguably the best wood I’ve had in all of my life, but nothing is perfect and I will continue to try and find something better. However, this board is truly off the hook and worth checking out, in fact, the graphic alone is worth a purchase! It comes in a bigger model too if you fancy a beast under your feet.
