Pennywise singer writes book

Jim Lindberg of Pennywise is set to release his memoir on parenting, entitled Punk Rock Dad.

The book was originally announced in 2005 and follows the singer as he raises his three daughters. The book will be published by Harper Collins on May 1st and carries the following summary:

” While other dads dye their hair to cover the gray, Jim occasionally dyes his blue or green. He makes his daughters’ lunches, kisses their boo-boos, and tucks them in at night–and then goes into the garage and plays Black Flag and Minor Threat songs at criminal volume.

He pays his taxes, votes in all the presidential and gubernatorial elections, serves on jury duty, and reserves the right to believe that there is a vast Right Wing Conspiracy–and that the head of the P.T.A is possibly in on it.”

From Autumn To Ashes get angry

From Autumn To Ashes recently launched a tirade against their former frontman in an interview for Altitude TV.

Ben Perri left the band last year suddently, having promised to appear for recording sessions but left the band waiting on him without giving them an explanation.

His former bandmates had been giving both angry and calm responses to the incident, but this most recent interview, with guitarist Brian Deneeve is far from calm. He said:

“I wanted to kill him straight up til the day I die…if I ever run into him I’ll end him one way or another.”

Alexisonfire – Live

Comeback Kid
Beat Union
Astoria
02.03.07

Every time Alexisonfire release a record, the content is always highly commendable. Not simply just because its good music (which it is), but also because Alexisonfire are one of those bands that just don’t change.

They grow, they mature and they improve but they have not once sacrificed any area of their sound to adhere to the ‘practicalities’ of becoming mainstream. Where I once respected, say, Armor For Sleep and Lifetime for the same reasons, we all know that their next major label records will be as pop rock as Fall Out Boy and New Found Glory were three years ago (don’t get me started on the scenes THEY came from…).

Anyway, the point is, the respect I have for this group is one of the reasons I was so excited by the fact that they completely sold out the Astoria. And there were no tickets in reserve this time; the venue was so jam-packed that even the support bands’ guestlists were halved.

(Un)fortunately I missed dubious new wave Brummie rockers Beat Union‘s set, but apparently they kicked up a good fuss, because by the time Victory Records’ Comeback Kid hit the stage the crowd were absolutely wetting themselves. Elbows flying and nails clawing their way to the front just to thrash around a little bit closer to these crazy metal boys. Their set was amiable, although slightly amateur – vocals a little less menacing than on the record and guitarwork fumbling over itself at times, this nervousness can probably be attributed to the fact that this was this band’s first really important overseas performance.

Of course, after Comeback Kid came the agonising 40 minute wait for the headliners to restart the riot. I was toying with the idea of detailing every movement onstage between the two acts just to pull something original out of this review but realised you would probably only skip the paragraph anyway. And so, after a short wait, Alexisonfire literally bounded into view, shorts and all, to re-energise the crowd with a mixed set list of all three of their records. Yet another reason to adore them, by the way, because they’re one of the few bands I know of that have released that many albums and are still proud to put as much effort into their old material.

Witnessing Alexisonfire onstage is always quite relieving. They put on a passionate, crowd-destroying show still unrivaled by anyone they’ve ever played alongside here in the UK, and you can always rely on them for hitting all the right notes. Obviously I am incredibly biased (in case you didn’t notice the halo I drew around them five years ago), but so what, I’m pretty sure the 2000 spectators clapping in the Astoria auditorium sweatbox tonight would certainly agree.

Vans Team on road

Now that the baldess git in the UK, Nic Powley has taken over the reigns at Vans with the UK team, he seems to be on a non-stop mission to get the crew to skate every random corner of our own shores.

Euro rider Chris Oliver, UK riders Ben Grove, Ollie Tyreman, Rogie, James Gardner, and flow dudes Manhead and “Gorgeous” David Watson headed south east for six days of shredding a long list of pretty much untouched (or at least undocumented) skate spots, swimming in all of the rat infested waters they could find and making sure they at least visited Tesco’s once a day for the greasiest meal possible.

The coverage will be in an upcoming issue of Sidewalk with Vans supplying the footage via their web Podcasts in the next few weeks at www.vans.co.uk

411VM Vol.15 Issue 1- Up for grabs!

As spring creeps up on us, 411VM drops a new Volume to their deep back catalogue of footage. Issue 1 of Volume 15 arrived on my doorstep and boasts a wide selection of skating so nothing is left to waste. On offer we have Chad Bartie, Terrell Robinson, Derek Fukuhara and Jason Wakuzawa, Nate Sherwood and a feature on New York City. See what I mean by wide selection?

So, it’s Saturday morning 11.30am and I figure a new issue of the highly esteemed video magazine will get the juices flowing for a good daily session. The first thing I notice with this new volume is the presentation- minimal. No more book like features to the packaging, just a
backboard and the DVD. That’s fine by me; I never really liked the free advertising style articles anyway.

The video opens to your usual bangers with the Boxcar track, then it’s straight to Mr. Terrell Robinson. I must say that I admire a kid who has grown out of stereotypes to just skate what he wants. What I’m about to say might stir a taboo pot, but Terrell was raised in the ghetto and dresses like a Hessian. Watch him blast airwalks and kickflip boardslides on spots that don’t look like marble ledges, but more like lengthy gaps and rails. In any case, Terrell rips shit up and looks like he’s having a good time doing it too, so good for him!

Next up is Jason Wakuzawa and Derek Fukuhara who share a part full of smooth street technicalities. I wouldn’t like to play these guys at skate because by the looks of how they’ve got their tricks on lock, I’d be out faster than you can say 411. Some people might find their picture perfect balancing acts too sterilised, but you know that a few of their bangers took some effort. I mean, watch Derek pull a hairy backside 5-0 and wonder what could have happened if he messed up, and then see the exact thought seconds later. Tough tumbles aren’t going to stop either of these two anytime soon though.

Ok, let me stick my neck out again here, but I seem to remember people feeling dirty and ashamed about an era in skateboarding that praised the pressure flip. The afore-mentioned trick was banished and only re-surfaced for mockery and educational purposes. It seems like Nate Sherwood never got the memo. Sorry Nate, but you’re rapping sucks, your style sucks, your stupid skate based glossary sucks and the pressure flip sucks no matter what you do with it. Oh, and never, ever rap to your own part! Skip.

I’m heading out to the Big Apple pretty soon, so the New York City edit had me salivating for the over-abundance of spots the East Coast megalopolis has to offer. This section features skating from street stylers like Brandon Westgate, Aquil Braithwaite and Zered Bassett, as well as sled shredders like Pat Smith, Danny Falla, Darrel Stanton and others. A very well rounded selection of skaters, so these few minutes are worth watching for sure.

Helas, Vol.15 Issue 1 ends with an Australian unafraid of white pants and a mullet, better known as Chad Bartie. Chad is a pretty versatile skater who can take it to banks, rails, ramps and more at the drop of a hat. If he isn’t spinning frontside270 nosepicks to come out forwards on steep hips, he’s flying way out of ditches to axle stalls above the nipple. This part was rather good because I haven’t seen much of Chad since he emigrated back to his homeland. Hopefully 411’s coverage will spark a little sense into the media to get more footage out there..?

That pretty much wraps it up for the new 411VM. Like I said earlier, the format has been trimmed down to the almost bare minimum, and this issue offers a good cross section of skaters and styles. Solid skating from a steadfast sureshot video magazine.

Plan B – Pat Duffy

Ashbury Series

One good turn deserves another so I finally got round to keeping my end of the bargain and reviewing a board for Zac – The Plan B Pat Duffy. The Ashbury series 7.5, the choice size for a tech wizard such as myself, well, to be honest it’s the size I like to ride, but my tech skills aren’t what they used to be and I thought seeing as the first Plan B board I had some 10-11 years ago was a Pat Duffy, I could perhaps in someway rekindle my youth and maybe some of those lost tricks.

For starters as with any Plan B board past and present. It is solid as fuck, this baby has smashed head-on to corners of ledges with out splitting or even denting the wood. The shape is a pretty standard lollystick style with a clean 6.5 rounded nose 6.0 tail, not to much in terms of concave, which initially took a little getting used to as the board I was riding before was super deep, however, my mind was soon in tune with this

The board felt light and snappy and I was almost 15 again feeling the board pop right every time, leaving me wanting to skate more street than I have in some time, I will say if you like a board graphic that has a punch in the colour department then this is clearly not one for the faint hearted with its bright pink/yellow colour tone.

It seems the most daring of the colour tones for the Ashbury series and the graphic style is the same for all the other Plan B pros in this series with a good range of colour styles. We all know Pat Duffy was one of the first innovators in balls out big handrail skating, but I am not sure if a 7.5 would hold onto your feet for a backlip down a huge rail in the rain, but It will be a pleasure to ride.

On the other hand I hear Pat Duffy has some seriously big Hospital bills due to a knee spitting slam on Bob Burnquist Vert ramp. Any extra cash could go to his beer recovery fund which is all important to any professional athlete.

Buy Plan B, get great board, get Pat drunk, simple really.

New York hardcore group Madball have signed a European deal with I Scream Records.

The owner of the label, Laurens Kusters, said of the deal that they’d worked closely with the band on the recent Resistance Tour DVD volume 2 and the Worldwide Tribute To The Real Oi compilation, and to work on their new album, which is due out in September this year, is the “icing on the cake in this 13th years of business for the label.”
