Hip Hop birthplace honoured

The location that has been described as “the birthplace of Hip Hop” is hoping to be preserved after an application to make it a historic landmark was approved.

The Sedgwick Building hosted parties where DJ Kool Herc played sets which spawned the foundation of the Hip Hop culture and has been namechecked in tracks by the likes of Nas in the recent past. Herc himself called for the preservation of the building, so let’s hope the authorities pay attention and keep the historic building exactly how it should be kept!

The Skateboard Art of Jim Phillips

Jim Phillips, skateboard artist extraordinaire, has released a new book featuring the graphic artwork that we’ve grown up with and scraped off our boards for years.

This retropspective on Jim’s skateboard art bombards the reader with colourful skateboard decks, logos, ad art, ad layouts, photos and stickers to illustrate the history of skateboarding from the urethane revolution up to the present. You are invited for a ride, an inside view of Phillips Studios, to observe the wacky world of his crazed studio artists, and examine their graphic assignments. The story traces the roots of skateboarding with more than a half-century of Phillips’ involvement. It provides insight into the creative evolution of the sport and the worldwide interest and influence that has occurred from this California artist.

The Skateboard Art of Jim Phillips is available now through Schiffer Books at www.schifferbooks.com

Deathbox 20th Anniversary show

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Britain’s most important and influential skateboard companies, a huge art show featuring the legacy of Deathbox will open in Rotterdam, Holland, on Friday July 27th at the VIP International Art Galleries.

Featuring original deck art, magazine articles, tons and tons of controversial ads, photos by Davey van Laere and the incredibly sought after Deathbox video: Spirit of the Blitz, this exhibition will show just how important this company was in the progression of British skateboarding.

Just the names of the people attending should be enough to make you realise this, as so far the confirmed ‘celebs’ turning up include Sean Goff, Mark VDE, Pete Dossett, Alex Moul, Jocke Olsson, Rocker, Andy Scott, Davy Van Laere, Brian Vavier, Ian Deacon, Justin Ashby, Nico van der Wel, Jeremy Fox, Geoff Rowley, Tom Penny, Arto Saari, Mark Appleyard, Rodrigo TX, and more.

This reunion will be happening during the World Championship Skateboarding comp in Rotterdam, so yet another reason to take the weekend off – www.wsr07.com

Deltron for Def Jux?

Del might be signing for Def Jux, according to reports.

When talking in an interview about his new album, 11th Hour, Del said:

“Looks like I’m possibly fucking with El-P you know for the release of this through Def Jux. I’ve known El-P for a long time. That’s my boy man. Looks like it’s going down like that. But 11th Hour is my best work to date.

It’s a Del album so don’t expect to be listening to no crazy space shit or none of that shit. If you want that you got to listen to Deltron. This is strictly about me, how I get down, my real world shit and I how I get through it…”

Blimey.
