Birdhouse deck winner

Corby skater Matt Knibb from Desborough starts the New Year with a signed Birdhouse deck courtesy of Shiner in our latest competition.

He mailed in this pic today and said: “Big thanks to Crossfire for the birdhouse deck. You guys are doing a sterling job with all the skate events you are organising and keeping everything posted on the site. I was totally amazed to see that I’d actually won something for once especially when I opened it and saw that it was signed by all the Birdhouse team, that made my day. It’s not everyday you get a deck signed by Tony Hawk!”

Don’t miss the eS DVD comp that is up right now and look out for a video feature on this site this week at Matt’s local skatepark Adrenaline Alley in Corby..

Blu and Exile

A record that has been making some waves in the underground over the last few months has been the debut album from 22 year old Blu who has teamed up with Exile on the beats. Exile was known to some for his part in the duo Emanon with Aloe Blacc and with his vintage beats lacing the path for the newcomer’s rhymes, it seems like a perfect match.

Whilst many have said this is going to be known as a classic in the future, it is probably far too early to tell if this has lasting value, but one thing is for sure – it is a great record. It’s one of those albums that you can stick on when you’re moping about and instantly feel good about the world and with the long, cold nights at the moment, this is an instant remedy.

The track you can hear above is My World Is… which showcases the soulful Exile’s talent as well as giving a platform for Blu to show just why he is being touted as one of the hottest rhymesayers in the underground. He tells us “I’ma ride til I crash” but with tracks like this, he won’t be doing that any time soon.

The Ruts & Henry Rollins

Back in the 16th of July last year, the remaining members of classic UK punk band The Ruts regrouped with ex-Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins for a now legendary show at the Islington Academy in London.

The reason for this was guitarist Paul Fox was dying of inoperable lung cancer and the Ruts and their friends and peers in bands like The Damned, Misty In Roots and UK Subs came together for what was an incredible night as The Ruts played for the last time in their lives for their friend Paul. You can read all about it here.

Paul sadly died in October of last year but later this month sees another celebration of his life and a DVD of that classic night last year. This month also sees the releases of an exclusive download of ‘Babylons Burning’ from the gig featuring Rollins on vocals. Check it out:

Independent – DN Killer Jacket

With winter looming and talks of snow, I headed out and hooked myself up with a descent winter warmer to help me stand strong in this far from desired cold weather that hangs around for 6 months too long.

Independent have a reputation for coming up with bad ass apparel and they seem to hit the spot time and time again when they reveal the latest additions to they’re catalogue with some heavy hitters for the likes of you lot to crave.

Fight fire with fire was never something I really put on my daily bread, but I chose to approach the dark season with a dark jacket, a phenomenon I found quite fitting for this occasion. Navarrette’s Killer Jacket on Indy fits this profile scarily and I made sure it’s my must have for these treacherous times.

After ordering the ‘baddest’ jacket on the block, my excitement 10 folded when the dog saw the rabbit and realized how desirable it actually is! The outside is 100% pure cotton woven so tightly it could probably withstand the gnarliest sand storm the Sahara desert can throw at you, it’s a tough bastard. The most enjoyable feature of the jacket is the oxblood red quilted satin lining that runs wild underneath the tough exterior and slides ever so comfortably onto your back. The zipper has the independent cross on it whilst your left breast bears a red spade that too holds an Indy cross within it’s embroidery. It also holds a nasty habit pocket on the left arm, an interior pocket for your precious belongings and a hidden stash pocket around the left cuff!

This bastard is warm and cozy and wont leave you out of pockets either, it’s a wise choice by my standards and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the finer details that makes it a pioneer in it’s field.
