Harrow Jam rocks the Weald
The weather eventually cracked late on at Solid Surf today but despite the threat of downpours, hundreds of people gathered to make some noise to help save the legendary Harrow skate park. Best comp tricks went down in front of packed crowds with Darryl Dominguez taking a flip fs air over the bollocks whilst Dan Cates shredded the nuts on 3 decks instead of one.
The concrete half pipe was nailed by a sick front blunt from Carl Wilson who once again turned up and laid it down. His Duffs team mate Ben Raemers also ripped the crete with wild nosepicks and disaster reverts despite skating with an injured knee. Eventually the damp, cold weather kicked in and stopped play, but everyone was up for it and the atmosphere rocked. In the end, free shit was tossed out, punk bands played raw hardcore and as the booze kicked in, the traditional, beer can and shoe fight took centre stage!
Well done to everyone involved as this great scene turnout should have raised awareness of the importance of saving and renovating Solid Surf Skatepark. We will bring you some footage and a gallery feature soon but watch this documentary below for the pitch.

Lights.Action!
It’s been quite a year so far with London based 5-piece Lights.Action! Following on from two successful single releases last year (Satellites and Story of a Broken Boy), adrenaline filled appearances at Leeds Festival, the Great Escape and Download along side support slots for Boy Kill Boy, Aiden and I Was A Cub Scout, to name but a few – the band’s ever growing fan base fought off competition to secure them funding for a full length album with the Slice The Pie – the website that enables artists to raise money directly from their fans to professionally record and release an album.
This month sees the release of their debut mini-album on Xtra Mile Recordings, a collection of their best tracks to date, and the perfect way to mark this chapter of their career, before it all kicks off with the new album. Mixed by Richard Wilkinson (Ox Eagle Lion Man, Bombay Bicycle Club) the EP kicks off with single ‘Aurora‘, edging up the tempo with rich guitars, angst driven bass lines combining with Patrick Currier’s commanding vocals. The tracks share the same fervour, with punchy melodies colliding into an intelligent combination of rock, emo and pop, without bowing completely to either genre. With an American-lilt to his vocals Currier throws out intelligent lyrics, encased in addictive riffs and it’s easy to understand why these guys attract such a loyal fan base, with the energy and passion never dropping.
A spine tingling cover of Imogen Heap’s ‘Hide & Seek‘ is an unexpected but stunning addition to the EP, the fragility and serenity of the harmonies highlighted by the coursing guitars and searing riffs of the previous tracks. ‘All Eyes to The Morning Sun‘ is a good showcase for Lights.Action! and well worth a listen. With a new album in the pipeline, they could well be the ones to watch for 2008. Enjoy.

Son of Rambow
Paramount Vantage
www.sonoframbow.com
Son of Rambow is this years perfectly written, brilliantly acted, little British charms. It’s a light-hearted, coming-of-age story about a growing friendship between two very different boys set in the awesome eighties. The two boys cross paths when Lee Carter is kicked out of yet another classroom, and discovers a meek and impressionable Will Proudfoot, who isn’t allowed to watch television and has been excused from the class. After a couple of boisterous couple of minutes Lee manages to convince Will that he’s a good guy and will take the blame for an accident, if Will helps him with a home-made project.
Because Will is a member of a sort of Amish brethren, he is an outcast unable to join in with most of the childhood frivolities we all took for granted, one of these, would be watching films. So through a pirated copy of Rambo: First Blood, Will offers to help Lee with the project, in hope it will be accepted into a local amateur film competition.
Will wants to play the son of Rambo(w) instead of Rambo, taking the situation of losing his father in real life, and rescuing him from death in the film. There are a handful of hilarious scenes of the two boys filming the stunts for the film, inter-spliced with Will’s active imaginative story-boarding, creating the most charming Rambo sequel never invented.
As a quirky subplot, the boys school is in the midst of a French exchange, and the new French students bring another dimension to the film. French sixth former, Didier, has exotic rock-star looks and an overly cool attitude, which makes him an idol to all the local students. Didier quickly creates an entourage who then force their way into the Rambow production, excluding Lee which causes friction between him and Will. Causing a massively affectionate and touching speech from Lee, before a near fatal accident, where Lee risks his life for Will.
Son of Rambow is a compassionate coming-of-age offering that shows the wonderful positives in a sea of darkness. Which is one of the reasons this film is so good is because it’s not all laughs, and happiness, it deals with the boys family issues, including death, repression and loneliness.
Garth Jennings (director) allows the film to unfold in an astute, witty and lovable manner. Using the physical and visual humour that children love and we recall. The ending is warm, tearful and lovingly happy, and yeah, sometimes that’s a bloody brilliant feeling.
